In this video, I want to talk about what to do if you stalled when doing intermittent fasting. I get this question a lot from my viewers and guests on my live show, and I wanted to create this video to cover all of the basics.
Our bodies have been evolving for hundreds of thousands of years. Starvation has played a part in this process. Starvation is a risk to your survival. Humans have gone through a lot of periods of starvation. We’ve developed and adapted certain mechanisms to help us survive.
When you start fasting, signals are sent to the brain to let it know that food is scarce. Your hormones and cells then adapt and become more efficient.
During fasting, the body starts to tap into your fat stores.
For survival purposes, your body wants to stay fat so that it maintains energy to use during periods of starvation.
1 lb of fat is the equivalent of 3,500 calories. So just eat fewer calories and exercise more, right? Wrong! Traditional weight-loss tactics rarely work.
Your metabolism plays a massive role here. Hormones will slow down your metabolism if you eat less, which can cause you to gain weight.
Fasting helps you get rid of your glycogen reserve-which is stored glucose and water.
The key hormone that keeps your body at a stall is insulin. If you have high insulin, you cannot lose fat. If it’s low, you can lose fat.
Focus on lowering your insulin, and you will have a much easier time losing weight.
A simple way to tell if your insulin levels are high is if you have a very strong appetite. If your insulin levels are low, your cravings go away.
If you can’t go a few hours without getting hungry, you have high insulin and insulin resistance.
The following 8 things will help you keep your insulin low. I put them in order of effectiveness.
1. Fast longer (don’t eat unless you’re hungry)
2. Lower carbs (including hidden carbs)
3. Lower stress
4. Increase sleep (7-8 hours)
5. Decrease fat (75g)
6. Exercise
7. Avoid certain medications
8. Reduce insulin resistance
When you’re fasting, you want to eliminate all macronutrients (carbs, protein, and fat) but still have some micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and amino acids).

When I've lost weight without fitness, that is when I hit plateaus in weight loss. Fitness breaks through, especially if you fast. When you come off a fast, don't pig out. Go back to small portions. Keep your weight loss progress.

Oh boy there is soooooo much more good stuff to come too!! Be kind to yourself and take things slowly til you get used to it. I'm on day 37 and I've lost 16lbs, have much reduced body pain (fibromyalgia) no headaches or migraines since and have got rid of my constant daily heartburn too 😮 Also I have lived with depression for 28 years and this is the best I've ever felt in my life (I'm 40) This is all because of Dr Bergs videos!! I am and forever will be so grateful to him for sharing his knowledge and really and truly helping people 🙏 PS: 3 things that have helped me are: 1. Adding small bit of exercise each day (I literally started at 15mins per day once I felt more stable with my blood sugars etc and have built it up to 30mins minimum per day, giving myself days off when I feel I really need it but no more than 2 days off in a row so I don't lose the flow! 2. Keeping a daily log of what and when I ate. Mood, energy levels, motivation to exercise etc. That way I can reflect and see how certain foods affect me- It's actually eye opening! 3. Consistency. Stick with it even if you allow yourself that treat now and again that's ok and don't beat yourself up about it. You will get to the stage where you don't even want that treat most of the time because you've lost your cravings for them and other times because you've realised how the sugar affects you, you just chose not to for the sake of your health! It feels great when you get to that stage because you feel so much more in control of your body. Sugar actually affects my decision making because of how it makes me feel. I wasn't really aware of that before. Anyway I hope this helps you and with watching lots of Dr Bergs videos I've picked up lots of tips to fine tune things, like adding apple cider vinegar, drinking green matcha tea, breaking my fast with protein etc so definitely watch lots of his videos they are truly like gold. Best wishes to you on the rest of your journey to health and vitality...You will not regret it I promise!!! Xx❤

@@lindaferns3625 listen to your body and gradually you learn what it needs. I was doing longer fasts and had to stop. I now find it more beneficial to do no longer than 20hr. It’s my personal set point for regulation of insulin with no nasty side effects. Do you know that you are having a hypo by definite blood glucose testing? I ask only because I know that even when my glucose is normal I have the very same symptoms from my insulin reaction . Took me a long time and a lot of research to realise that it’s insulin resistant metabolic disorder not the glucose levels. I’m type 2 diabetic BTW. Don’t know if this is useful? 😊

During my 120 lbs weight loss journey, I encountered many stalls. Regardless of how stubborn the stall, no stall was intractable. The remedy to any stall is to increase the fasting window. The more stubborn the stall, the greater the fasting window should be. Assuming that you have a good grasp of what a healthy weight should be, don't be afraid to go on multiple day fasts to break the stall to reach your goal.

I stalled while doing low carb omad. I was eating 1431 calories per day and only consuming 26 grams of carbs per day. I gained 5 lbs in 6 weeks. I checked my fasting insulin levels and they increased from a 13 to a 17. You cannot burn fat if your fasting insulin is above 10. I did a 60 hour fast, rechecked my insulin levels, and they were at 10. The 5 lb fell off and my weight loss started back up again. I cut my protein down about 50 to 70 grams per day. I switch from steak to shrimp and fish. And make sure I hit my keto macros. It's been effortless ever since. Your fasting insulin will tell you the story.

You don't Starve when you sleep for 8+ hours so how is "missing breakfast" or prolonged fasting gonna put you in starvation mode? It's not. Your insulin levels will be low, meaning your body will be busy burning fat. You will stop body fat burning when you eat and you insulin is raised again.

Hi! I want you to know your videos are making a difference even here in Brazil! I have eliminated almost 30 kg (from 114 to 84kg - more than 65 pounds), since I had a heart infarction in 2018. Currently, my weight oscillates around this 84-86 kg. It feels like plateaued. Also my cholesterol is high (260 total / 140 LDL/ 80+ HDL), and my cardiologist is putting me back on statin... (Rosuvastatina)... I recall you have a video on cholesterol levels during ketogenic diet... I would like to share it with him. Could you please send me the link? I had a hard time trying to locate it on my own. Thanks in advance! And thank you for all your videos.

seriously don't eat unless you're hungry? I could go for 2 days and still not feel hungry. I never gone for 3 days yet. Also I'm overweight. I always thought t here was something wrong with me, because some ppl in my family go hungry so quickly, while I can't seem to go hungry at all. I remember I could go hungry while younger, but in the past few years. I lost that sensation. I wonder if my body is telling me to stop eating as its trying to use the fat in my body

Always love your videos! I'm doing OMAD for 50days now. On the first 30days I lost 10kilograms...but last 20 days I lost very little weight, I'm wondering if I eat too much fat: typically I eat 7cups of green leaves salad with 3 tbs extra virgin olive oil for salad dressing, and 5 eggs. I also do daily exercise: HIIT using body weight like burpees, jumping jacks, push ups, squats, deatlifts, twice to three times a week, and 20 minutes walk for the other days. Should I eat less egg, or less olive oil? Or Should I keep my egg and olive oil, and add more exercise?

So I cut all the sugars, all. Nearly no carbs, fasting by eating something at around 3pm 18-19 hrs. then at 7 or 8 something small if hungry. Vegetables steamed and a fatty meat, salmon or chicken thighs. No carbs. Cheat 2 o3 times with salad dressing... 30 days lost close to 30 lbs and now maintaining at 230+/-. I just started to changing fasting to once a day... I have noticed I am no longer thirsty as before, water with apple vinegar and lemon...twice a day and 1-2 cubs of coffee. No real sugar cravings. I suppose I will eventually start to loose again. I do not want to loose muscle or strength. I was not exercising because each time I have I gained. Was going to take up just walking but I am pretty active anyway... comments?

Hi, Doctor Berg, Hope you are well. I have been doing IF since April without any major weight loss. My initial weight was 65kg (Height 163 Cm) and right now I am 61.5 Kg. My weight fluctuates a lot. I eat carb only in one meal that is dinner around 6 Pm. Recently I have done my insulin test and my random glucose is 75.3 and insulin is 32.55 μIU/ml, is this is the reason I'm not losing weight?

If your fat loss stalled it's because you're eating too many calories. Intermittent fasting in and of itself isn't a magic bullet to induce weight loss. It's a means of making EATING LESS easier. I've been doing IF for 6 years and from what I can see this video is just over-complicating something extremely simple. Eat less = lose weight, regardless of what your hormones are doing.

I am curious what Dr. Berg has to say about oxalates. I can’t find any KZbin video from Dr. Berg about oxalates and a safe limit. I have seen that he claims to eat gigantic portions of spinach, and spinach has an absolute obscene amount of oxalates in it. Dr. Berg seems knowledgeable, but I have to question some of his advice. I suspect that he has just not investigated oxalates yet. Not because it would affect his Keto business.

I just couldn’t find what he recommended for a maximum allowable daily oxalate limit. My daily limit maximum is 150mg, but I prefer to keep it under 50mg. If Dr. Berg eats as much spinach as he claims, he is consuming oxalate that would likely be measured in the thousands of mg. Not looking for a fight or to put him down. No one is all knowledgeable. Just his educated opinion after he has researched it.

Hi Dr. Berg! I have been intermittent fasting (OMAD, usually 20:4 up to 22:2) for a little over a year. I have lost sixteen pounds overall, but gained a few back. I haven't lost anymore weight at all in about 7-8 months, although I continue OMAD. It's so frustrating when I see others losing weight so easily. :( I have about 20 pounds more to lose and am 61 years old. I didn't hear you mention anything about Vitamin D deficiency affecting insulin in this video, but I've heard you talk about that before.(maybe in another video) Anyway, I visited the M.D. for a physical last week and found out I am Vitamin D deficient. (18) I am wondering if this is what has prevented me from losing more weight? Do you think this is a possibility? Thank you for your expertise, Dr. Berg! :)
