There's this great progression of The Doctor throughout the season. He starts out angry, guilty, and bitter which truly reveals itself in "Dalek". Then in "The Doctor Dances" is where I think he truly becomes THE DOCTOR again in his own mind. He'd seen and caused so much death, he needed a solid win. As a long time fan of the original, "Everybody Lives" is my favorite moment in all of Who. When we get to the finale, he's finally done with the idea of mass killing "for the greater good". Eccleston was indeed, "FANTASTIC".

I think it was a blessing in disguise that Christopher eccelston left at the end of the first series. Because new audiences that were too young or not born when the original series aired, got to see all the hallmarks of the show. Like the Tardis, Darleks, but because they had to change the actor the new audiences got to see the Doctor regenerate at the end of the 1st series. So audiences worldwide fully understood the premise and the uniqueness of the show by the end of the first season. Then followed by Tennent arguably one of the best ever. Also If i was the DR ,i would have taken Jackie up on her offer, LOL. I wouldn't have in 2005 when this first aired, but 17 years later.

Eccleston was wonderful. Showed range depth and a light touch that tenants “shouty” doctor eventually got to grips with as well. Never got on with the Matt smith iteration and had given up on it by the time that Jodie W picked it up but I’m sure she’s ok. She was good in Attack The Block after all … Anyway…it seems a shame that Eccleston was treated so badly or one of his peers was. I get the impression (this is me inferring rather a lot) that a member or members of the crew were sh@t on by RTD & co in the production office and the technical people had the temerity to resist this bullying from the show runners. Eccles ton stuck up for them and left and then the bbc compounded the error by releasing that cock and bull press release about a “mutual” decision etc. I think Chris (rightly) is still waiting for an apology for that. He’s the sort of person who you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of but seems loyal to a tee. I’ve had bosses like that and they are the best people to work for. They back you to the hilt. Others seem nice superficially but then stab you front back sideways at 1st opp. Rant over. Great clip.

I remember the first time I stumbled across the "reboot". Dad raised me on Tom Baker, so I knew Who, but this was just incredible. It was the one with the monster bird thing, the one with Rose's dad. I was immediately hooked, and while I don't watch anymore, I'll always have "my doctor" (I was also a huge "Coupling" fan, so Moffat does little wrong in my book)

One of the better relaunches of a TV show ever. Struck just the right balance between appealing to a new audience and completely respecting everything that came before. Eccleston's Doctor was beguiling and mysterious and despite the 'Oop Narrrrth accent completely and utterly alien. Billie Piper was engaging, vulnerable, and relatable as Rose. It had the odd mis-step (what doesn't?) but that first season for my money could be the strongest most consistently perfect in New Who's entire run. They nailed it right out of the gate. And they were *fantastic*.

Like most U.S versions of British TV series, many alterations were made such as "half human" did not go well. A shift, already mentioned, was toward the companion and extended family. This began with Ace. 3 of 4 stories in season 26 were centered on Ace and continues forward, creating stronger stories.

Eccleston was great as the Doctor. Dalek was just sublime, and for all of the following years I still think it was the best episode of new Who. Yes there have been more action packed episodes if that's what you like, but for sheer emotion and passion Dalek has never been surpassed imho. Eccleston was superb. I will always feel that we have been robbed of what could have been had he stayed in the role longer, but now that the full story of his reasons for leaving are out in the public domain I can understand why he did leave.

Thanks once again for an awesome, insightful perspective on Doctor Who! My heart goes out to the cast and crew that had to put up with so many sexual creep-a-zoids as co-workers - those crappy actions made for an unsafe workplace, that's for sure -- and *nobody* wants that in their Day Job... ....and too bad Eccleston is forever haunted by this experience (he did recently perform as the Doctor in a Big Finnish audio play, so he's slowly coming around...!). It would've been great to see him fight off the alternate-reality Cybermen or Weeping Angels! I always find it really strange to see former Doctors sorta complaining about how the show still follows them around - did they really think they could shake it - like it shouldn't matter, "because it's Television"?! Regardless, I tip my hat to Eccleston for staying pro and giving a great performance despite what was happening behind the scenes. I find actors who come into sci-fi with a pro attitude and strong work ethic are always the best at their craft and great to watch. He should easily make top 3 of anyone's list of favourite Doctors (mine are: 1) Tennant, 2) Baker and 3) Eccleston in case you were wondering... you probably weren't tho... 😉 )

I'm an American fan of Doctor Who. I worked at a NATO post in Europe and when the new series aired my UK friends invited my wife and I and a bunch of others to their place to watch it. My wife isn't a big fan of Doctor Who and knew almost nothing about the show so it was kind of funny how she didn't understand why we all cheered when the theme music started.

My understanding is Eccleston was frustrated with people not knowing what they were doing or should be doing considering it was the first series. He felt one the directors he had a close relationship with did not get enough support from RTD, and lost the opportunity to direct further episodes unfairly. He went to the BBC top brass to protest and they told him where to go. So he left. The way the BBC treated him was appalling. Lying about him being too tired to cope with the schedule. It pretty much destroyed his career. No wonder he was bitter.

Surely the psychic paper was just as overused as the sonic screwdriver? It's not proper Doctor Who without him being thrown in a cell, escaping, getting caught, being put back in the cell, escaping, getting caught, being put in a different cell, doing the old "Get Help," escaping, realising he left something important in his cell, surrendering, being put back in the cell, before finally being dragged out of his cell and presented to another know all know nothing leader-type, so that he can be condemned to death but only after a short stint in a conveniently nearby cell. That's what modern Who gets wrong: not enough time spent getting nowhere fast, week in, week out. All this fast paced, action packed, humourous, emotional pay-off heavy, good natured fun... too much thriller, not enough filler, by half. You don't need psychic Anaglypta paper to see the writing is on the wall for this so called, "New Who." It'll never catch on. Mark my words, after this first season right here, Doctor Who will be Locum Hiatus for good this time. And it's the last we'll ever hear of this "RTD" bloke an' all!

Cheers Stam Fine yet another great review 👍 Imo Christopher Ecclestone did a great job of reviving the Doctor Who series and I really liked the harder edge of this series. Billie Piper turned out to be a much better actress than many thought as at the time she was seen as a teen pop star so people thought she wouldn’t be able to act her way out of a paper bag. Personally I think the more recent series of Doctor Who have lost their way with some awful writing and an over emphasis on PC elements. I look forward to your reviews of later series and your take on them. I look forward to the next damn fine Stam Fine review of a tv series I and no doubt many remember from the past. This was an outstanding series reboot/revival, and I think RTD did about as well as he possibly could. We have character arcs! Real special effects! Sets that aren't made out of styrofoam! Doctor Who actually gets to smooch his sidekick! Okay, that last one probably dated a bit, but I do remember feeling annoyed and frustrated at the lack of any sexual chemistry on Classic Who, especially when most people I tried showing episodes to were making wisecracks about all the Doctor's "girlfriends" (very much like Bond Girls). Just let him kiss someone for once! I don't care if it's a Muppet at this point. I do like Eccleston's take on the character and it probably works best that he's only around for a single season. He has a very nice character arc that reaches a proper climax by the end. At the time, I had assumed that RTD crafted this series on the assumption that there wouldn't be any more seasons, and so wanted to leave all threads tied up nicely. Fortunately, the show was a big hit and we've been blessed with many more seasons. Although I get the impression that everybody hates Doctor Who again. Sigh. Oh, and expect smug Trekkies to point at the Father's Day episode and make those coughing sounds. "Cough, ripoff, ahem."

the helmet from "Dalek" was from 1975's "Revenge of the Cybermen", which at the time was a refurbished helmet from the 60s and had knurled hoses added. that story did take place in Earth's future, when the space traffic beacon had just finished construction and newly in use. probably used as nostalgia bait, and how Van Stratten got it isn't interesting. just that he had it is. Maybe Fenric sent it back through time.

Given what is now understood to be the reason Eccleston left I think characterising him as just having a chip on his shoulder is a little low, especially as you raise the alleged on-set behaviour of Barrowman yourself toward the end of the video. Eccleston stood up for the members of the production staff who were being upset but who were also being ignored by the people in charge. That is also the reason Eccleston said he would only come back if a certain person was directing - that particular director was the only one who would not put up with Barrowman's behaviour.

KZbinrs are a victim of the algorithm, unfortunately. The fact is there are more searches for Doctor Who than many of the other series he's reviewed, so it can draw more people to channel. I do love his classic reviews. Many have brought back childhood memories I'd nearly forgotten. Others have been shows I'd never heard of that I look forward to finding and watching some day.

The end of his run felt like a return to basics which was really needed. Im starting to put series 10 up there with the first five series of the revived show. Writing is surpringly competent
