I think it was a shame we didn't get 3 more seasons, as the show was certainly good enough to hold my attention. I have to say the final episode was just an awful way to go out. I still think this show belonged to the golden era of Star Trek, and I think it is vastly better than the newest iterations, which seem to be made for people with ADD and a need to be visually assaulted with constantly changing camera angles and dumbed down dialogue.

My situation is a bit a-typical. I never really watched it when it first came out as I'd lost interest in Trek by then, but a couple of years ago I decided to sit down and watch every trek episode from TNG thru to Enterprise, start to finish. I was genuinely surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did, and felt it had more of its DNA in past Trek than with the contemporary Trek of today. It certainly wasn't perfect, and it did feel more 'American' in its sensibilities and values (I felt 9/11 could have had something to do with that) but yeah, I was sad to see it end so suddenly, and with such a brutally insulting episode. The cast deserved a better send off than that. ps. there are rumours Scott Bakula may be coming back. pps. Although TNG was the most popular, I think DS9 was the best.

@@MrBendybruce The amazing thing was, I didn't even know Enterprise EXISTED until about 2011 when I saw it on Netflix. This is despite the fact that I was in high school during the time, watched TV constantly, grew up on Star Trek and was always a fan of it. I'm guessing they did a poor job marketing the show and that might be one reason it suffered.
@MrBendybruce3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDeadAlewives I agree, Even the way they experimented with the oddly unsuitable theme song, which felt like it belonged to a different genre of show, and the way they dropped the words Star Trek from the shows name for the first few seasons. They sure didn't do themselves any favors.

@@StamFine I think it's a generational thing - I was born in 76 and didn't get into TNG, DS9 or Voyager until the 2000s when I was already in my mid to late twenties. TNG's first season was shown at 6pm on BBC2 here in the UK opposite the 6 O'Clock news on BBC1, ITV and Channel 4 so it had literally ZERO opposition for teenage me BUT when they killed off Tasha Yar I stopped watching it - It was a good decade and more later when I went back, bought the DVDs and watched the entire show from beginning to end. I hated DS9 from the moment I first saw it in the early 90s and again it was a good decade and more before I went back and watched the entire show to evaluate it properly - I still hate it! Voyager I didn't even bother to watch when it originally came out BUT I caught its first season and a bit on DVD {actually it may have been VHS} in the late 90s and loved it. It was still another few years before I watched the other 5 and 3/4 seasons and I have to say that I hated 7 of 9 from the moment she arrived. Enterprise again I didn't bother to watch when it came out but did catch up after watching all of TNG, Voyager and DS9 - I liked it a lot more than I thought I would but it never came up to Voyager's or TNG's standards and there were significant issues - T'Pol was extremely annoying at first and only got better when they paired her with Trip. The Andorians were great but the Vulcans were annoying, The Orien stories were trash but the Klingon stories were decent, I still don't know what the Hell they were thinking when they brought the Borg and Ferengi into it! Oh and I didn't like ToS either - I watched Dr Who, Lost in Space, Land of the Giants, The Time Tunnel, Knight Rider, The A-Team and The Dukes of Hazzard as a kid so you'd think Star Trek would have been right up my alley but I never got into it....I still find ToS very variable in quality with a lot of awful episodes. - But what I'm getting at is that despite being seen as a "Kids" show Star Trek wasn't ever really AIMED at "Kids" properly and a whole lot of people like myself didn't really get into each show when they were on TV - VHS and DVDs and now Streaming allows people to watch the shows in a different way, one where a single "bad" episode {Actually the one where Tasha Yar dies is a fantastic episode but I didn't realise that at 12 years old!} doesn't put the watcher off because the next episode is there immediately not a week away. And obviously there's a big difference between what a 12 year old gets from a show and what a 25 year old gets from a show {Even if at 45 years old now I still hate Deep Space Nine!}. The makers of Star Trek are still making the same mistake with STD and Picard....These are not "Kids" shows! They're made for mature audiences BUT unlike the previous shows they don't actually attract those mature audiences either....Mainly because they've added a second grave error in trying to aim these shows at audiences that weren't already into Trek rather than the audience that IS! Star Trek despite its faults was always OPTIMISTIC! STD and Picard and that Godawful Lower Decks are PESSIMISTIC and HATEFUL! They don't like their own audience. Roddenberry didn't much like how the World was when he created Star Trek but he was OPTIMISTIC {blindly you might say} about the Future. The showrunners today aren't optimistic about the Future, Instead they're trying to FIX NOW! They haven't got PATIENCE! They're not thinking LONG-TERM! They ignore the vast cultural changes between 1967 and 2021, they ignore how far we've come and how much better things are today for so many people. They don't want to let the human race proceed at a steady pace and want their version of Utopia TODAY! STD and Picard won't be re-evaluated in 15-20 years time - They'll be forgotten! The move to Streaming has an unintended effect {hopefully unintended because if its intended it's massive short-termism} of destroying the Hardcopy culture. There won't be people re-watching STD and Picard in 20 years time because by then there'll have been a thousand other shows streamed and these two will have been lost in the shuffle and digital downloads will have been erased and written over!

Shran is definitely on the top of the list of reasons to like "Enterprise", because the canonical Andorians were completely devoid of characterization and Jeff Combs was the perfect choice. Consequently, the development hell of the whole show planned to put Shran onto the cast as a regular member, weekly, before being ultimately cancelled. Such a wasted opportunity, but yet, it didn't take anything away from "Enterprise" or any of the episodes where Shran is showcased.

I revisited Enterprise a few years ago and quite enjoyed it, having not really liked it when it was on TV. It never reaches the same highs as the other (pre-Kurtzman) series, but it also never reaches the same lows. It stays at a pretty consistent level of 'good'. Rarely amazing, rarely awful, perfectly enjoyable to watch. There's no equivalent of The Drumhead, but on the other hand no-one has to play hopscotch, fuck a ghost, turn into a lizard, or have their brain stolen. Lwaxana Troi doesn't appear even once. I also genuinely think it has the best first episode out of any Star Trek series.

The aesthetics of Enterprise helped draw me in. The bridge and other parts of the ship are very close to what you'd find on a modern naval ship or submarine. Compared to TNG where the bridge looks like my optometrist's waiting room in the 1990s. The beige and carpeted hallways on the ship only added to that doctors office feeling. They even had frames available for prescription lenses that looked almost exactly like Geordie's visor (people took more style risks back then).

“Enterprise” is a guilty pleasure for me. I started my freshman year at university on September 2001, and my go-to episode, “Strange New World” is the first episode I ever saw. Elements of the show are fun. Bakula as a “cool dad” type of commanding officer hearken back to Roy Scheider on “SeaQuest DSV”, and watching the show in a fun “we’re a tight-knit family in an enclosed space” mimicking many submarine films works very well. I’ve said this multiple times, but in the vein of “Earth 2”, if Berman and Braga had somehow convinced UPN execs “instead of making it a Star Trek show, can we make an original sci-fi drama in the style of 90s Trek?” Like we saw “Stargate” do better as a tv franchise than a summer blockbuster movie, the start of “Farscape”, “Sliders”, and the saturation of first-run syndicated sci-fi/fantasy in the early 2000s, keeping most of the “Enterprise” formula, but making it a standalone series with a non-Trek styled ship (no saucer section), and focusing more on the Space Boomer subplots (“Fortunate Son”, “Horizon”) would’ve made it a far more palatable series that could’ve lasted a couple more seasons. It would also stop all the UPN exec interference to bring on boy bands, do more teen angst romance stories, make the Vulcans have normal human ears, etc, to mirror the “Buffy”/“Angel”, and other WB prime time programming. Without the Trek label, the execs wouldn’t have a franchise legacy to trample over every chance they had, and Berman wouldn’t have to keep defending basic plot rules established 40 years prior.

Enterprise wasn't nearly as bad as people remember it being, no where near as bad as what we're laughingly getting as "Trek" these days. Season 4 I think actually gave us some of THE best Trek ever, because it did such a great job of filling in history we'd only heard of earlier shows. The Romulan three parter is one of my favourites and great way to bring in the Romulans in again and prelude the Earth/Romulan war! I agree with the bad episodes list except for North Star. I find that a fun, enjoyable and easy episode to watch. It's always fun when Star Trek goes "Back in time". Spectre of the Gun was a TOS episode I always liked for similar reasons along with TNG's Times Arrow.

Initially, I did not like Enterprise but because I like Star Trek, I stuck with it and it wasn’t long before I began to actually like it (everything but the song🤮). I even liked the original title. I always skip the intro so I never noticed the change. While the writing, and occasionally the directing, wasn’t the best, Scott was not the only good actor. Jolene absolutely nailed her role and the actors given lesser roles added depth to otherwise boring scenes. There is no doubt Enterprise improved and deserved another three seasons.

I think 'Enterprise' was more true to the vision of Star Trek than other iterations. There were also a lot of story arcs that ran through each episode and I disagree that there were only '2 part' episodes that were un-connected. The destruction of the Vulcan temple of Pagem, the interactions with Shran and the Andorians, the temporal Cold War, Daniels, Archers time shifts and sadly the growing realisation that the universe was not the Elysium fields Star Fleet thought it was going to be. The crew were far more normal as a group. Archers necessary transformation to become more ruthless because he had to was compelling and in the role, Scott Bakula was fabulous. The only character that I thought was weak was the worlds most useless armoury officer, who looked the like the only thing he could have bested was an angry blue tit, always insisted he went first, could miss trying to hit a barn door at 5 meters and was convinced he would probably be killed by opening an unfamiliar Christmas present. Don't get me started on Neelix.

Watched this video again, and a great review! I think another reason for Star Trek Enterprise cancelled and a drop in viewers is possibly franchise fatigue, with so many series having been run, perhaps originality in episodes was becoming more difficult. A break in production until the Abram movies in 2009 and Discovery appearing later was not a bad thing. Currently Strange New Worlds is doing a great job in return to episodic storytelling (where there is situation and climax every episode), while some of the other new shows have mixed reviews. The problems with season long stories in new trek like Discovery, is that some episodes are drawn out and boring and loaded with dialogue with slow plot development. By contrast, Enterprise Season 3 season long story was actually very good with a Xindi story. A good show runner can help.

It was a good series, I enjoyed watching it. But the series finale was really bad.

Really enjoyed Enterprise when it first aired in the UK in the early 2000's and still like it now after several revisits. Season 3 was were it found its feet but I'm still a bit annoyed about 'These are the Voyages'. Gutted it ended after four seasons- oh well...

Agreed; like Archer's theme.

Love everything about this show aside from the recycled shmaltz of a theme song. I have never skipped the intro to a show so many times.

I don’t think James Cromwell, was really in it, just old footage…

The problem after Enterprise is that the people who loved the series and loved Star Trek's brand of sci-fi were no longer around. Writers had moved on. Producers moved on or weren't asked back. The new Star Trek LACKS a lot and makes Enterprise and Voyager look like masterpieces of Television.
