Excellent upgrade, i recently did the same for my stampede 4x4, but i purchased the brushed XL-5 model so i could convert to brushless myself with an esc/motor combo of my choosing. I had bought the same ESC as you, but my motor is from XTMracing and its a 3300kv 3655(550) size 4pole unit and both dropped into the chasis w/o modification. My truck came with a stock 9t pinnion, coupled together with a 2S 5000mah 30c lipo, it ran a bismal 14mph, then i dropped in a 3S 4300mah 40c lipo, speed increased to 21mph, next came a 12t pinion and while still using the same 3S lipo, speed increased to 32mph. I do have a 17t pinnion avaialable to use, but 30mph was my goal and then some it seems, so its there to stay for now, and as far as cogging goes, my setup just barely does it, way less than yours. Other upgrades includes aluminum shock caps, front and rear adjustable turnbuckles, replaced the plastic center driveshaft with an aluminum one and proline trencher tire/desperado wheel combo setup. Keep in mind that the DIFF gear ratios differ from the brushed XL-5(3.92) and the brushless VXL(2.85) trucks, as you can see, the XL-5 has lower gears for more bottom end power, but less top end speed, and the VXL has less bottom end and more top end speed all because of the differences between brushed vs brushless motors. Good Times

So I have a question. I have a Traxxas stampede 4x4 vxl that has been sitting for quite some time. I went up to the local hobby shop and it was determined that esc and motor went bad. I ran this setup years ago and always had over heating issues. Well they sold me a Castle Creations Mamba x with a 1406-2280 motor. I think I messed up by listening to him because it wasn't what I expected for the "upgrade" it's geared at a 17t but it's really not fast on top end and actually has an annoying high pitch sound when running. I'm running a 3s lipo but I'm just not satisfied with it. Any suggestions? Did I fuck up by adding such a low kv motor? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
@BudgetRC_Channel3 жыл бұрын
2280kv should do ok on 3s. The whine is probably the operating frequency of the ESC. You can raise that and you'll probably stop hearing it. Use the Castle Link to connect to your PC and you can make the change.

@@Frumundaair I'm not sure what you'll need for gearing. Mine is 2600 or 2800kv and I geared it way down because it was uncontrollable on 3s, but you can probably gear up a bit if you're not happy with the speed, just watch your temps.

If you're having heat issues, that's good advice, but this truck runs cool as a cucumber. I can go bash it for a whole pack and still touch the motor and ESC. This 1/8 stuff doesn't pull any current in a lightweight 10th scale truck, especially with how I have it geared.

This ESC can be programmed via the "beep" method using the button next to the on/off switch, via a programming card, or via a PC, which also requires the programming card, or a USB adapter dongle. there are a lot of Hobbywing programming videos on KZbin that can walk you through all 3 of these methods.

What kind of 3s battery do you use to fit in the stock hold down?
@BudgetRC_Channel7 жыл бұрын
Matthew Mizushima, I bought the oversized battery strap kit. It comes with a taller rear block and a taller front stud. With it, you can use much larger batteries. My primary battery for this truck is a 500mah 50c hard case SPC battery that is quite large. However, my other pack is a 5000mah 25c soft pack and that one fit in the stock tray.
@lonniewalker44417 жыл бұрын
So, if no cogging is the goal, you need a sensored motor/esc. The cogging is expected, and normal with unsensored motors.......that's what sensored & unsensored means, with a sensored motor, the esc knows the exact position of the rotor in the motor due to info gathered using the sensor wire. Unsensored motors cog when taking off..... it's not a flaw, or something that needs fixing, it's normal
@BudgetRC_Channel7 жыл бұрын
Lonnie Walker I have sensored setups in other vehicles, but 1/8 scale sensored setups don't fit the budget I set for this truck. That said, there are motors & ESCs that are better than others with cogging. This isn't one of those combos. If you look at my Ruckus rig rundown video, you'll see that the Tacon motor in that truck exhibits virtually no cogging.

That doesn't make a lot of sense with 2s vs 3s. Should only really have a 30% increase shouldn't you? Would be curious what it does with 2S and 17/54 or 18/54 as far as speed and temps. I'm currently in the same boat. Just running 2S with the 2.8 chevron tires and VXL. It seems fine with 14/54 at the moment, but guessing it will run hot when it warms up outside. For me, this seems to be a good speed. Not overly slow, quick enough at the skate park. A little slow on wide open running, but I'm not usually gearing for highway speeds, I don't want it to feel though slow either. I was thinking of going this route you took, but I really didn't want to run 3S if I didn't have to since I have 2 brand new 2S packs I just bought... Suppose I could always use them in my revo. I'm guessing the 1/8th scale setup really shortens the run time as well. Would be curious about that too. Good video. Really shows me what I may have to look forward too in my near future.

You didn't give enough distance on 2s for your phone GPS to recognize the speed properly. I say this because I've seen it on my phone doing speed tests. I'll bet if you try again over a longer distance, you'll beat what you did on 2s last time, even with the new 13t pinion. :)

That cogging… put it in a 2wd and it wouldn’t be doing that. It’s your driveline not the motors.
@BudgetRC_Channel Жыл бұрын
Reducing drive train load (2wd vs 4wd) or lowering the pinion will help reduce cogging, but the main cause on these cheap setups is the startup code in the firmware of these cheap ESCs. Brushless startup code isn't super easy to execute, and most of these ESCs are copies of very old, very primitive models with primitive firmware.

It runs very cool. I geared down to a 13 tooth pinion, and on 3S my motor temps didn't even reach 120F running through thick, 3" grass. By running higher voltage on a lower KV motor, you use a lot less current.

Sounds like something in the deiveteain is binding. Pull the pinion off the motor and verify that everything spins smoothly. Spin the motor by hand and see how it spins. If all that checks out, reinstall it and make sure the gear mesh isn't too tight.
