If you want to show the detail of the boots and belt, use a shade of brown instead of black. Haddon Sundblom, the commercial artist credited with cementing the now-classic version of Santa Claus in his print ads for Coca-Cola, always drew Santa with brown boots and a brown belt and (I think) brown gloves as opposed to black in many of his illustrations.
