Thank you for bluntly stating “Logos are stupid.”! I just had this discussion concerning fashion with my granddaughter, who, at 16, insists on clothing that says Nike on it. One pays more for the “privilege” of being a walking billboard for a company! In my opinion, logoed (yep, made up word) items should cost less, as these companies have huge marketing budgets! I feel they should be paying their free walking advertisers!
@user-qp6lj6gu7sАй бұрын
There is another factor: to get people to want to wear the logo it has to be known as a somewhat expensive brand. Yet another one is that if you raise the price you keep poor people out that would be bad advertisement for the type of thing they're trying to sell. This is how they also trick low income people or teens to buy overpriced items, fake social status that no one else cares about. This is why it from time to time becomes unfashionable and looked down upon, like with the quiet luxury trend. Not saying it's good, but that's how it works, if you want to get through to her you'll have to show you understand what the appeal is in the first place. I guess warn her about it looking tacky.
@user-qp6lj6gu7sАй бұрын
The channel Design Theory has several videos explaining this way better than any yt comment could, for example in the video called "how brands use design & marketing to control your mind" You'll find it easily, it's the one with the Nike logo in the thumbnail 😂
@a_trauma_llama2991Ай бұрын
The thing though is brands often advertise a certain lifestyle, personality, group etc. Teenagers, always looking to fit in certain groups as they're still finding their spot (and some of hold on strong to such identities, which is fine). So the clothing helps them quickly get sorted in the increasingly hostile and fast moving teenage social life. Participation is mandatory for them if they're in school, they can't avoid it, so perhaps a dialogue will help you and her come to a more mutual understanding. After all, we all understand wearing your 'Sunday best' or 'dress to impress'. Same principle, different mechanism.
@jeanne-marie8196Ай бұрын
@@user-qp6lj6gu7s Thank you for the advise. I went through this with my daughter as well. “Designer jeans” was her thing. I said fine, but i had the same budget for her and my son, so if she only was able to get one pair of jeans, that’s what she’d be wearing every day. Of course she.chose the designer jeans. Peer pressure, in an attempt to stand out, dresses everyone the same! (Same as when I was in, what we called, junior high. I looked down the hallway one day, and saw my same dress, all over the place)! When she taught in a high school in a poverty stricken area with some of her students living in cars, she realized the insidious effect of this advertising tactic.

To my grandma a lot of stuff in there was just old junk. It’s stuff she had out at the ranch and she didn’t want it back then and she doesn’t want it now. So she was literally throwing it out the door and my dad was out there catching it all. To him it was great antiques to her. It was old junk. if you want to find some great old stuff, you go out in the country and you hit the estate sales. A lot of great stuff in those old barns and houses.

As a third-generation vintage junkie, I have to say that most thrift stores aren't really the best places to find vintage homeware and furniture. There are a few second hand stores that specialize in vintage furniture, ranging from dusty antique stores to heavily-marked-up mid-century modern specialists. In these cases, you are paying for not only the furniture but also the costs of running an in-person storefront. The emptier the space, the more each piece will cost, but usually you are also paying for better quality and curation. You should expect to be able to get good information on the materials, construction, and designer of a piece in a high-end boutique. If you need the curation, and have the budget, the extra cost can be worthwhile to get a hold of a genuine, high-quality piece. Chances are they aren't trying to bilk you, they are just trying to make enough to pay their staff and the commercial rent. By contrast, a tiny weird old overstuffed pawnshop is probably going to have a lot of junk, but lower prices, and potentially good value hidden gems. But the best bet has always been estate sales and downsizing sales. People in those circumstances are looking to get rid someone else's stuff, not make a profit, and these days most estate sales are online, meaning you can bid from the comfort of your home. While some people have a lot of junk, others might have a whole house full of great stuff to offload. Just be careful not to bid more than you are willing to pay. It's helpful to have a lot of knowledge about the styles you hope to collect, so look for resources. The internet can be good, but also look for books and specialist magazines. Learning about types of wood is also valuable, because it can tell you more about the age and quality of a piece. If the materials aren't right for the period, a piece is probably a lower-quality reproduction rather than an original. Also be careful of flipped pieces. While some furniture flippers care a lot for their craft and can expertly repair or tastefully repurpose damaged pieces, others may simply slap on some paint and call it a day. While paint can be appropriate, keep in mind that it may indicate underlying damage to the wood surface (if there is one) and cause unintended problems like sticking drawers when used improperly. Traditionally, having an intact original finish on an antique or vintage piece increases its value. This does not always mean bare wood--some pieces may have always been painted, including those with period-specific folk art. However, most pieces aren't museum quality artifacts. At the end of the day, what someone does with a 1990s buffet is none of my business. Just be sure to know what you are buying and figure out if the price is worth it for you.

I am so looking forward to the end of the open plan kitchen&living room concept! I’ve been living in a flat like that and I hate the feeling I’m still in the kitchen when I’m already at the sofa. Also, the closed kitchen, if it’s big enough to put the table in there, is perfect for people with small children! You can feed a child without worrying that the content of a plate is going to ruin your carpet, couch, etc. Such rooms are made for getting messy and dirty sometimes but at the same time are easier to maintain. The same goes for if you have pets. I love them, but I really think that a dog’s bowl belong to the kitchen and not the living room. Also, those kitchens can be very cozy places! I have the best memories from times spent in my grandma’s kitchen where I accompanied her with cooking or simply playing on or under the table.

I didn't mind your use of "grandma" this time. I acquired my first decorating book 50+ years ago. I think I was 11, and it was diy decorating ideas for teens' rooms. Anyway, one idea was to use the same floral fabric on the walls, curtains, bedspread, slip cover on upholstered side chair . . . So yeah, that idea goes way back!All us teens and tweens who got that book new are now grandma age.

You mean my 90’s 1 1/2 story divided room house is coming back in style? YESSS
@lauriebakАй бұрын
I have a 1.5 story 90s build, as well. Downstairs is partially open plan, but i love that the “business end” of the kitchen is not visible from the living room. The 1.5 story has charm, but the biggest thing is managing temperature control. The upstairs basically being a big partially-into-the-attic loft makes that a bit tricky. Been in the house a year and still trying to dial that in. A whole house fan for summer helped immensely, though. Love the additional easy access storage space it provides, though.

Thank you for acknowledging that not all thrift stores are made equal. Good thrifting, whether online or in shops, really depends on where you live and how much money you have.
@jekalambert9412Ай бұрын
Separate rooms are more energy efficient. You can close yourself off in a small room and use a space heater or room AC unit to stay comfy while letting the rest of the house get too cold or too warm. I also hope builders will start favoring lower ceilings again so we don't have to pay for energy to heat the ceiling while freezing our butts off at ground level.

I would say that depends on the house’s era. I had a Victorian that was inexpensive and I had it both very “billiard room” decor and more modern. It looked nicer in the richer tones.

Handmade by me, handmade by locals, everything in my house tells a part of my story. I might play with colour, look, etc but my house reflects who I am and my values. I would never buy something just because it’s “on trend”. I genuinely like everything in my house and if I stop loving it I pass it on to someone else. But I love your videos and your sense of humour and the comments are always gold.
@lucybraun8969Ай бұрын
I feel like color drenching will quickly trend out. People will quickly tire of the color they chose, and then not want to have to do all that painting all over again. Lots more fun things to do with your home besides painting, painting, painting, and then re-painting.

Two of these make me very happy: rethinking open concept and a return to colour. While I've made some of my own house quite open because it just works for me, I've often thought that open concept kitchens are for people who either don't really cook or don't care how much mess their guests see. And open concept bathrooms are pure madness! As for colour, it's about time! As an artist, I've been wondering why our era is so terrified of colour. Colour is gorgeous. Embrace it! Enjoy it!

YES! So happy to hear that! And to use a dining table as an example was perfect for me. My one “luxurious” item when I bought this house was the dining room table. I absolutely love it. It is extremely heavy, solid reclaimed wood and is finished beautifully. But there are no signs of what brand it is or who made it. I just know that it was made locally and will definitely stand the test of time.

I rewire thrift store lamps and have been doing it since pre pandemic. My favorite is a vintage brass Stiffel lamp I found for five bucks. It's cat proof it is so heavy. I am one of those people who will find interesting things in any thrift store. It's a matter of knowing what you are looking at. I collect swung glass vases and most of them are thrift. Vintage Mexican lottery is another thing and wonderful Italian glass that would go high at an antique store. So glad moody is back.

When we had to rebuild my condominium unit after a fire I rented a unit in the same building that was the same unit but was renovated with a n open plan and it was very when either of us were cooking and disturbing for whoever was sitting in the living room. Also I found that smoke got into the living space even though nothing was burning and we decided not to go with an open floor plan when rebuilding because we didn’t want to need to constantly have to paint every year.
@rsmith1820Ай бұрын
I never understood the "I need to keep an eye on my kids." rationale for needing open floor plans? First of all my generation survived even though our moms were sequestered in the kitchen. 2nd - your kids can get hurt/hurt one another/learn how to open the front door while you're hovering

All I’m keeping my eye on is the pile of dishes to wash and the mess in my kitchen . I hate the open concept of my flat
@LlyleHunterАй бұрын
@Sorrely1. I agree because I don’t even load my dishwasher or wash my pots until my guests have left. I spend my time with my guests while they’re with me. I don’t spend all of my time in the kitchen unless I’m taking something out of the oven and putting food on platters or serving bowls. Otherwise I spend my time with my guests and I don’t want them to see piles of dirty dishes.

I’ve given all of my 23yr+ wooden furniture new life by painting them. I bleached my buffet and added a paint wash to tone down the yellow in the wood. It’s now my feature piece with new handles. I painted the orange TnG that went half way up the walls that matched the orange timber floor and kitchen cupboards. It was a nightmare of colour drenching. Haven’t got rid of the floor colour yet but since painting the cupboards, I no longer screw up my face seeing them. They’re a beautiful neutral colour with white walls.

There's some research suggesting that introverts will generally feel better in a home with a broken floor plan (they need areas separate from others to retreat), and extraverts will prefer open concept (more opportunities to connect).

The key to thrifting is going daily. 99.9% of the things I see are garbage, but when you go every day, you will definitely find some good things. I have gone weeks without buying a single thing and there’s other days I’ve dropped over $100 in one visit. Going daily helps you to learn when new merch hits the shelves and most importantly, helps you to get to know the staff. Once they know you and know what you like, you may be surprised at the little tips they give you.
@carolscott9973Ай бұрын
I love the idea of quiet luxury, an investment piece that doesn’t scream advertisement for a brand. This is a piece that can be passed down; if you can afford to buy even one piece, make it count and make it something that you will treasure for a long time. We purchased a gorgeous, hand knotted, Persian area rug in 1999, it still looks like brand new and we still love the piece. It cost us a lot of money, but we’ve had years of use and enjoyment; whenever we’ve moved, the first criteria of where we move to, is that the rug has to fit. The colours are soft and muted so it fits with every colour we’ve painted in our rooms.

I bought my last couch at Ikea almost 30 years ago (when Ikea still made real quality stuff that didn't look cheap) and it gave up the ghost in September. When we went looking for a new one, I wanted it to be the kind of quality that would last another three decades, which is, I guess, "quiet luxury"? Ended up with the Reva from EQ3 in a mid-tone teal/blue,, and it makes me happy every time I look at it.

@KMMp-t3t This is so comfortable (or so I hear). I got the sofabed, which is super easy to pull out and has a nice, supportive mattress.
