Love how Stan casually said THE JLA made him do a Superhero team. Just shows how often and how normal it was for Marvel and DC to take inspiration from one another and give these ideas their own take and touch. While Fanbois these days are triggered by this small fact

Well technically they still don't wear costumes. The Fantastic Four's outfits are more like team uniforms then traditional superhero costumes in my book.

That was a phenomenal call by Stan. It's amazing to me how both FF and Spider-Man who are two of my favorite properties of Marvel happened due to pure accident and risk taking since neither were expected to be successes, but it's that exact realism which Stan Lee added which made those characters so engaging. Like the powers at that point are simply an icing on the cake, the true spotlight takes this phenomenal family dynamic you can create

I read comics as a kid. Loved the Marvel line because of the writing and the use of science and mythology. They weren't your regular type comics, they made you feel as if you were. Thanks to Stan Lee and other comic book writers, I got hooked in reading as I got older. I read a lot as I grew up. Probably thousands of books over the years. I still read a lot to this day. Reading helped me with learning new words and that translated to my speaking and with words I was not familiar with, I was able to figure out what the word I was unfamiliar with, what it meant.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stan came up with Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm after watching a Bonanza episode back in the late fifties-early sixties, The Thing and The Torch remind me so much of Little Joe and Hoss Cartwright, their bickerings as well !

The FF didn't wear costumes in their first 2 issues because they were distributed by DC, who didn't want any superhero competition, So Stan had the covers highlight the monstrous nature of their foes so they could pass as monster stories. Once they took off, they were launched in issue 3 with full costumes as DC could no longer complain.

Feel free to mention Jack Kirby, Stan. Anytime now. So the idea to do a team book was not his, and since Marvel didn't have famous heroes with costumes who had their own books then, it couldn't be like Justice League. (And anyway, JLA League was long pre-dated by JSA, in 1941. The character designs were obviously not his, because that was Kirby's job, and they were all standard established types in comics. Human Torch first appeared in 1939, only h was an android--he is a wiseass like Johnny, and honestly not much different looking when he's flamed off. Stretch powers--Plastic Man first appeared in 1941, Elongated Man in 1960 in a Flash comic. Invisibility, c'mon, H.G. Wells. Though you could find the idea in ancient mythology. Sue Storm's powers were hardly anything amazing for a female hero in that timeframe, or decades earlier. She was a ditzy dame who got saved a lot in the early issues, and worried all the time about how she looked. She didn't get the ability to create force fields until '64. Strange Tales #79 featured a giant green monster called The Thing, but leaving that aside, Ben's original appearance greatly resembles The Heap, who first showed up in Airboy Comics, 1941. There were tons of reluctant monster types, but I will agree Lee wrote Ben fun dialogue that stuck out. I am by no means sure all the humor came from Lee, though. Kirby did funny books before he ever worked with Lee. I guess I believe he wanted them in civvies all the time, but that's him taking credit for an idea he himself admits comics readers who liked FF's first issue did not want. But wasn't it original that the team all wore basically the same color uniform, that did not disguise their identities? Not if you've read Challengers of the Unknown, which Kirby did for DC, back in 1957. Lee could just say "I used a lot of old ideas and jazzed them up a bit." That would be fair, and he does deserve credit for changing up the old formulas. But that's all he did. Everything else is him telling a self-serving narrative about how he did everything. Which isn't unusual in the comics biz, many examples, but that was because none of them owned their ideas, so they desperately sought credit, and would be jealous of attributing anything to anyone else. Throwing ideas back and forth in the Bullpen, probably hard to remember who came up with what. But without Jack Kirby's artwork, Lee wouldn't be trying to take credit for FF. Because nobody would remember it ever existed.

He was talking about the traditional superhero costumes that were established in the 1930s-1960s. Punisher was created in 1974 & John Constantine was created in 1985 (the era where comic books began to make mature content).

So DC had a successful group of heroes.... And Goodman suggested doing a comic of a group of heroes united as a team..... And Kirby created Challengers of the Unknown 5 years earlier for DC...about a quartet who resolve to band together after a crash landing.... And Challengers of the Unknown had a character named Rocky, who was shot into space and returned with multiple superpowers, including invisibility, flame throwing, and super strength..... And Kirby created 25 or so pages of FF #1 plot and imagery from a one-page outline Stan gave him.... ....and somehow it's Stan's creation? Marvel and the MCU never happen without Lee, as he was their greatest salesman. Credit given. The greatest character Stan Lee ever created was Stan Lee. But be real about who did what. If asked, Stan never denied credit to his "artists"....but he never corrected people who gave him the sole title of "creator" or "writer," which is - at best - a half-truth. His failure to tell the whole truth is a stain on his immense legacy.

Never knew that! So, the FF are basically the Challengers of the Unknown in a different suit.... 🤔 But, be that as it may, Stan Lee’s creates other characters which were pretty successful....

Tektoniks Architects He always says he’s the co-creator of Spider-Man with Steve Ditko, rather than the only creator. And he also said at times that he would give people like Kirby and Ditko outlines for them to work off of; giving them trust to come up with great stories along with the illustrations they create.
