I work the comic con in Kansas City, and when Stan was here a couple years ago, the enthusiasm was huge, thousands of people standing in line hours upon hours for a thirty second chat and a handshake. No one complained, no one regretted taking the time, and this is why. He was a great man who exuded a love for what he had created and care for the people who enjoyed it with him. It sucks that he's gone, but he lived to see Infinity War bring two billion dollars worth of happiness to the world and went out on top in a way no one else has in my memory.

I know pretty much everyone has the same story, but wtf. I started to read Marvel back in the early 60s. I think around '62, when I was able to get to the USAF commissary in Germany and read from the rack while my parents shopped. I read all of the comics, but soon developed a passion for Marvel. DC were OK. sometimes exciting. I read Archie, I read all sorts, but Marvel. Marvel was the one. Why read a Superman comic and an Archie comic, when you could get a superhero and comedy by reading FF or Spider-Man? And who can't relate to Spidey? I had a lot more in common with him, even though I was 7 years old and tiny and not that special, than I did with my dad (I thought, then). Superman though. He was invulnerable, lived at the North Pole, could disguise himself with a pair of glasses and was an alien. How could anyone relate to that? When I reached puberty I saw my insecurities in Peter Parker, while I just wondered what would happen to Lois Lane's insides if Supie ever ejaculated inside her. Spidey gave nerds like me a dream we could sort of believe in. We were also stealth-fed the message that it's OK to lose while trying, it's important to try again, though, unless it wasn't worth trying in the first place. When my own daughter was old enough I gave her my stack of classic Marvel comics. She read them the way I did, obsessively, and back-to-back. When she heard the news she called me, crying, to tell me that Stan was dead. It's not just the joy Stan gave me, or the joy he gave you; it's also that Marvel was something special that we could be obsessive about and still appear normal, where I could go out with my daughter to the hills with our dog and walk and talk for hours about Spider-Man's personal problems, the death of Gwen, and Brown-Paper Bag Man. Without Stan Lee there would have been none of that.
