Ian - Stan was special, indeed, but NOBODY is on a par with Babe! The best all-around gauge of a player's hitting ability is Slugging Average. Stan's is a very fine .559, to go with his .331 lifetime BA. Babe's Slugging Avg is an awesome .690, which is No. 1, all-time, to go with a .342 BA! As of 2004, only four players were in the Top 25, All-Time, in the three Triple Crown categories - BA, HRs, and RBIs . . .Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, and Stan Musial! The fact that Stan was the ONLY player in NL history to be on this list is an amazing accomplishment!

DiMaggio missed three seasons in his prime, 28, 29, 30 to the military..He played 13 seasons, it would have been 16 if not for the service...He didn't hang on padding his stats the way Mays and Yaz and other players did...Stan was great, but to say he was a much better hitter than Joe? I don't buy that

As a 12-yr-old, I got to see Stan play in St. Louis in 1960. He was my boyhood idol; I played Little League, & copied his swing- I was a pretty good hitter myself! Went to a garage sale today, & found a framed 6x8 'highlights' card with his color picture, his stats, & his actual autograph!!! Now, having this & my also-autographed 'Clayton Moore- The Lone Ranger' picture, I have BOTH my boyhood ( I'll be 70 this December ) heroes! Life is good sometimes...!!!

@@onrywaymore104 You are so right, On'ry Waymore. A classic example of this is the 'reaction' by USA's "Baseball Weekly" to the deaths of Joe DiMaggio (4-page COVER story in March 10-16,1999 issue) and Ted Williams (4-page COVER story in July 11-16, 2002 issue), both of which were excellent articles, and most deserving. . . USAs 'reaction" to Stan's death was a small article on page THIRTY-ONE, in their Jan. 23-29, 2013 issue, with Ray Lewis on the cover!! I expressed my disappointment to 'them', stating that Stan deserved similar, if not, equal coverage, that they had given Joe and Ted. . .

@@onrywaymore104 Right you are, On';ry Waymore! A travesty is the PERFECT description! To their credit, I did receive an immediate reply to my E-Mail. . .The Assistant Managing Editor stated that they had heard from "a handful of readers regarding their coverage of Stan and it was not intended as a slight on his accomplishments". "In terms of the cover, we offer distributors three to four covers per week. . .""After Musial's death, we polled our distributors and few of them expressed an interest on a Musial cover outside St. Louis and the surrounding areas." I thanked them for their response and again mentioned that in terms of his place in Baseball History, it remained my contention that their coverage of Stan was inadequate!

Born in 1953 in STL with Cardinals memories that begin in 1960 it was disappointing those times going to a game in the early 1960s when he was not playing due to being platooned more late in his career. I remember him once in 1961 coming up as a pinch hitter and hitting a double to right field where were sitting in a game versus the Dodgers. He had a great year almost winning the batting title instead of Tommy Davis at age 41 in 1962. I sure remember crying the way Harry Caray on TV descibed his final at bat. Talk about drama. Harry Caray built up his last at bat in 1963 like something that would never again be seen. Another great memory is from September, 1963 when the Cards came up a little short in a pennant race with the Dodgers. They were losing 1-0 in STL to the Dodgers and just could not hit Johnny Podres. It took Stan Musial at age 42 TO BE THE ONLY ONE to step up late in the game and hit his final home run number 475 to tie the game. Harry Caray went wild as usual on the radio. Thanks for placing on KZbin.
