Ted was wrong about 1 thing. He said no one batted very than Ty Cobbs’ .367 … well he didn’t know this would happen yet Josh Gibson is now the average leader batting an all time .373, and he did it in a tougher league. The Negro Leagues defeated the Major League All Stars 51% of the time when they went head to head. I wrote that last sentence for those who read this and attempt to diminish Josh Gibson’s records. Since the Negro Leagues stats have been added to the record books, Josh Gibson is now the leader in average, OPS, and slugging. He should be the Home Run leader as well because he hit 800 home runs yet the mlb isn’t accounting for all of his hits.

I think you can make the argument that it was a tougher league based on the travel demands , the high and tight so to speak nature of league games on top of their semi pro responsibilities which would lead to triple headers and guys pitching multiple times a week , and stuff like that , but without discrediting the talent of negro league ballplayers , the inclusion of their statistics is a nice gesture but it’s hard to take Josh gibsons records serious given the fact that negro league seasons were only about 80 games long at best , which skews his numbers in that way . I think MLB knows that they have an ethical responsibility to keep the legacy of black baseball before the color line fell alive , but I didn’t like the inclusion of their statistics because it seemed to antagonize people more than anything .

It’s interesting you said this here too because Ted Williams was principally responsible for Gibson , Page , Charleston , Dihigo , Bell , and all the other great black ball players getting into the hall when he made a marlon Brando esque appeal to organized baseball doing right by those men during his induction speech at cooperstown . People were upset with him for not using his tremendous influence over Joe cronin and Tom yawkey to keep them from making the Sox the last major league ballclub to integrate , but if you saw yawkey’s face the day Ted got in the hall you would have understood why he didn’t see the point in that .

Yeah I just looked it up. .217 as a team. Includes pitchers. I think DH was the following yr. Not one batter hit over .260 though
