This song is considered "The second Canadian National Anthem" by a lot of people. The Franklin he refences is Sir John Franklin who was an arctic explorer who disappeared searching for the northwest passage. In recent years, Franklin's ships, the Eribus and the Terror, have been found.

Not only that, but the mummified remains of some of the crew, too.

Stan's death was a tragedy that Canadian's still feel. He helped define what being Canadian meant. Not in a rah rah sense but in an understanding of the people and geography. In the laughter and sorrow and triumph and tragedy of the everyday. Stan wrote our mythology and did it from the soul. I miss him every day.

I came to Canada 34 years ago and I still remember the first time I heard this song - I look back now and understand that at that moment, in my heart and soul, I became Canadian...

It was really nice to see Stan Rogers kick in to someone who had never heard of him before. I discoverd him 2 years ago and had the same feeling the first time i heard his voice.

The first fellow talking is the late Mitch Podolak, founder of the Winnipeg Folk Festival (one of North America's longest lasting music festivals). Stan was a tall man (6'6" iirc) with a powerful voice and vision. His most inspiring song was "Mary Ellen Carter". It was a song I have heard of as life changing.

Stan Rogers is one of my top 3 favorite music artists ever. Other great songs by him include The Jeannie C, Fogarty's Cove, Lies, Song of the Candle, Make and Break Harbor, White Squall, The Mary Ellen Carter, The Rawdon Hills, The Idiot, Barrett's Privateers, The Wreck of the Athens Queen, Night Guard, Lock Keeper, MacDonald on the Heights, The Nancy, Free in the Harbor... Honestly, it's hard for me to narrow it down because I enjoy pretty much everything he recorded. I wish he lived long enough to record more. He was only 33 when he died, although I think he had the presence of someone much older and wiser.

Years ago, living in Vancouver, BC, my son and I took a road trip through Alberta. One the outward, east, journey, my son could play all of his music that he wanted. On the return journey, westward, it was Stan. It was great.

Stan Rogers is one of Canada's greatest folk singer-songwriters. Northwest Passage is unique in his repertoire as it is sung all a cappella. Great choice of song and artist for a reaction!

"One Warm Line" was a documentary about the life and music of Stan Rogers. The title refers to a line from one of Stan's song.

Stan did a lot of amazing songs - some funny, some serious many deep. If you want to hear other songs by him, I'd suggest "The Mary Ellen Carter", "Barrett's Privateers" and "The Idiot" are 3 which give a great look at the range of his music. Each is very different.

Weirdly I'm a metal head but I prefer this version of the song to the metal cover that seems more popular on KZbin

You have good taste, the voice you hears in the harmony saying passage a bi louder is Stan “s brother Garnett. Stan dies from smoke inhalation from a plane crash

If you're referring to the one by UtA, I'm a fan of both but if i had to pick it would still be the original as well. The cover just has more popularity because of the timing, i think; the original has been around long enough to have slipped off the radar of many, but UtA exploded on the reactor scene fairly recently and brought new attention to it with their cover.

I hope you did or are doing the same documentary's version of his song Mary Ellen Carter, which features the words of a sailor whose life was saved because he sang it to stay awake in the icy water. And no, you don't have to be Canadian - the sailor wasn't!
