Islam, contrary to popular belief, rarely conflicts with science. In fact, much of modern science owes its existence to Islamic patronage. Philosophy, mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, to name just a few, would not exist as we know them today if not for Muslim philosophers. It was their research and development of the sciences during the European Dark Ages that eventually gave rise to the Renaissance Era. Note that that era was particularly prominent in Italy and Spain; lands that were previously occupied by the Islamic empire of the day. As for natural selection, there's nothing in Islam against that, either. It's just a slightly different perspective. To demonstrate one way they can be reconciled, consider this concept: Evolution is a macro-perspective of change in organisms. Creation is the micro-perspective. Organisms are changed over time to better suit their environment. If you subscribe to the concept of a creator, this creator is simply fine-tuning each successive example of the creation to better suit an *ever-changing* environment. If you do not subscribe to a creator, this gradual change is seen as a self-developing phenomenon and given a name; evolution, natural selection, so on and so forth. You may argue that those things are different, but consider that natural selection may simply be a side-effect of fate guiding the inferior to destruction, while perpetuating the existence of the more effective. tl;dr Existence as we know it is open to interpretation, and those interpretations are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
@HandgunSafe2 жыл бұрын
@@RPGTKingpin The ancient Islamic world did not preserve the work of Charles Darwin, so your discourse on the preservation of ancient ideas doesn't really address my comment. As for evolution being "a macro-perspective," that is not how paleontologists would speak of the process. But if someone who is Muslim can find a way to accept the process of natural selection, I guess I can't complain about that.
@RPGTKingpin2 жыл бұрын
@@HandgunSafe My point was that Islam isn't in fundamental opposition with science the way Christianity traditionally has been. As for the macro-perspective, the term only really holds weight when compared to the micro-perspective example I gave. They are two terms relative to eachother that are pretty meaningless in isolation. The only time I've seen Islam, or Muslims in general get hung up on the concept of evolution is strictly when the topic of human beings as animals gets brought up. Because the traditional Muslim perspective of mankind is that we are a level above other organisms. It's almost entirely an argument of propriety and decency in civilised society in their minds until you give it more context. Muslims don't like being told that human beings are no different than any other animal that walks, eats, defecates and breeds with no shame or regard for its surroundings. Once you reframe it as human beings sharing the physiological features that define an animal, instead of say, a tree or a mushroom, it stops being an issue.
