I like Heathers a lot better tbh. I feel like it has a deeper meaning than on the surface. Dear Evan Hansen is still great but the story isn't very heavy unlike in Heathers when it revolves around someone trying to save hundreds of lives but in order to do so she has to give up her love

Heathers wins by a mile for me personally. JD is incredibly misunderstood and whilst he acts out violently and is emotionally unstable, he could have been okay if anyone had even tried to save him before he met Veronica (who tried to save him but wasn’t able to). He watched his mom kill herself. Of course he’s messed up. People always say he’s psychotic, but I don’t think he is; he’s depressed, suicidal, self-hating, unable to control his emotions, it sounds like he has Borderline Personality Disorder to me. I have it and can confirm I have not killed anyone obviously lol, but extremes of emotion can push us into the most awful places and cause people with that tendency to actually commit violence. I truly believe JD could be saved. Initially, his love for Veronica stabilised him temporarily. Another facet of BPD is fear of abandonment and is often caused by a significant abandonment by a PARENT. Plus his dad is a neglectful and emotionally abusive asshole. I’m not justifying JD hurting people, that’s obviously wrong and not OK at all, but he’s not a psychopath or sociopath; he is not emulating feelings he truly has far too many of them. That’s why he “freezes” his brain, to numb the overwhelming pain that comes with BPD and depression. The BPD thing is just my theory but it definitely checks out, at least for musical JD. Movie JD seemed to lean heavily on the sociopath side and seemed to be mimicking feelings and using emotional abuse and blackmail to keep Veronica compliant. Sorry for the essay but to anyone who thinks it’s a simple as “JD is a psycho,” it’s not. It is never okay to shoot up/blow up a school, and it’s truly reprehensible to do those things, but I do wonder how many of those incidents could have been prevented if a parent, friend, teacher, guidance counsellor etc could notice changes in behaviour that are symptomatic of depression, psychosis, psychopathy, or addressed bullying, and attempted to deescalate that. Easier said than done and truly, school shooters do reprehensible things, it’s never okay, but sometimes someone in that state of mind can be saved, like I believe JD could have been. Feel free to dialogue with me about this but do not be rude.
