Interesting indeed! I also have used similar learning techniques since childhood. My dad is also a drummer and I can remember many evenings where we would just sit in the living room together and listen to his favorite records. He would point out specific things here and there, so I would know what to focus my attention on. So I imagined myself in that POV, tried to tap into the emotion and feel of the song, etc... Until this day these methods make up 90% of how I prep for a show.

One of my peers back in high school drumline would do this. He'd record himself playing rudiments and he would fall asleep listening to the recordings. The drumline instructor told us to do it but I thought it was insane so i never did it... but it works. My peer was the best drummer and he ended up becoming drumcaptain. Great story Stan! It's time for me to give it a shot 💪

Visualization for me started an early age as well but more so from an imaginative point of it. I didn’t think there was more to it until later on. It just made sense to me to listen to something in a calm or relaxing state and envision myself playing those exact parts. Even with gigs, visualizing packing up, loading in, even the drive. Of course these are just more basic examples but nevertheless very powerful.
