Keep ‘em coming man, the E36 updates are some of my favorites. Although I’m not big on BMW, I love what you’re doing with it.

I love all the builds but the e36 has a special place in my heart. I’ve owned mine since new… a ‘96 model that survived being a dd and track car. Still runs like it did 26 years ago. Maintenance is key…
@AndiS21-u6r2 жыл бұрын
I love following this build and details that you have shared with all the E36 community. An alternative "low cost" Brembo upgrade, would be to install front Brembos from Renault Megane RS (a rebuild & painted set can come in at 350-400$, from Europe ofc). They fit the "cheaper" 325x28 brake rotors from an E46 M3 and even the lower spec 325x25 from 330i. Where as the rear can be upgraded again from an E46 330i, with 320x20 rear rotors and adapters for handbrake functionality. Slap in an M3 3.0 (EURO) master cylinder with a M12/M10 adapter for better brake feel.
@Ant_rud2 жыл бұрын
I did this setup on my last e46 m3 back in 2015. Definitely gives the car that sporty look and the brake performance is better. Overall still a great kit for the money even 7 years later.
@danielwade9930 Жыл бұрын
Did you have to modify the master cylinder or any other components? Thanks
@Ant_rud Жыл бұрын
@@danielwade9930 I did not. I used the factory components. I upgraded to stainless brake lines, Porsche brembo calipers, new brake pads, and competition package m3 rotors. You will need the caliper brackets for mounting. I sourced mine from a forum member on the old m3forum.

I installed a StopTech ST40 front BBK and E46 325/328 rear brake setup in my E36 328is track car. Cost under $2k, and has been totally up to the task of advanced/instructor level HPDE driving. There's really no need to upgrade the rear brakes, but I totally understand wanting some bling back there. The StopTech kit also gets you much nicer rotors and caliper pistons that are specifically designed to work with the E36 non-M master cylinder. No need for spacers, either. The E46 325/328 rear rotors require zero mods and work perfectly with the parking brake.
@stanceworks2 жыл бұрын
Stop Tech makes a great product and kit, for sure. I just wanted to try a DIY path so I could provide info and answers to others! I'm always eager to learn something.
@shortbus9702 жыл бұрын
That low price of getting the calipers might be a stretch there but none the less still affordable and looks killer. For anyone who reads the comments Partshopmax has a great product for their z32 calipers for e36/e46 for under 1600

I definitely resonate with the sentiment for your first ever project car. My e39 was the first car I ever dove into modifying and I'm coming up on 11 years of ownership. After 7 years of gathering dust I finally got the time (and funds) to bring it back to life with a full m5 interior swap and all the other usual e39 mods. More e36 content!!

Glad to hear that! Keep the pedal down!

Man, getting a BBK for $1k would be ludicrously good. Hopefully this video helps a ton of E36/E46 owners out. My vote always is that you work on what you want to, as I've always found personally that maintaining motivation is what's important!
@miles323232 жыл бұрын
I really like that you used a time-sert to repair those shock bolt threads. I was a motorcycle tech for 25 years and that was my go to thread repair. One thing i liked to do was use a lubricant on the install tool and loctite (red) on the outside of the insert just to insure that the insert stays put if the threads corrode a bit. I dig all your builds and can't wait to see how they all turn out.

Wow never did I expect to see SpasticDwarf making his E36 into cookie cutter E36 we've had since circa 2011. Welcome to the club. Thanks for putting the list together and part numbers that's a big help to some people I'm sure. Idk how you just glossed over the hole machining of the calipers.. that's a big deal. And no mention of master cylinder or break biased. 🤔

I did this conversion last year for an e36 front set up. Pretty sure I did it for under 550/600 with decent pads and new braided lines. Well worth it. Only thing worth considering is piston size. Ideally you need to swap them end to end so swapping the cross over pipe and bleed nipple,,,, this can lead to issues if one doesn’t want to come out so be careful. Machining of the caliper surface is also easy to have done
@FourOff2 жыл бұрын
With Mike's comment on "spending more for drilled rotors," please note that will not last as long as blank or slotted. They tend to crack around the holes. Yes, they look like "race car" parts, but race cars don't run them anymore for this reason (they were originally to help vent gasses from asbestos pads, but that's no longer a thing). Slotted rotors help with cooling a bit and combat "pad glazing" (if you overheat your pads). I'm not knocking anybody for buying them for looks, just know what you're getting into and don't be fooled that they're actually better performing.

Mike, you always mention it in every episode as I might be a minus to some viewers, but I think it’s really cool that you can hop between projects without it seeming to bother you. I was expecting those rotors to be more tbh. Honestly, that's a good price for the quality of the kit and should give you a big improvement over stock. Hopefully you won't have too much rear brake bias with the same calipers front and rear but I'm sure you can sort that out later once you get some seat time. Really enjoying this series as it's a little more approachable for the average enthusiast vs the Ferrari build which is a little out of my price/ability range. Nice work!

I would comment "exact same thing" does apply to application, while YES its not a designated configuration - a simple follow up on performance/maitnence on 2 or more conversions (like a forum) is the basis of how almost all backyard progress is made with OEM retrofits - if you look carefully many of the kits are using these same principles as platforms expanded repurposing in a similar manner.
