When I saw it on TV as a kid, I missed the shot of the newspaper headline in the beginning, so the ending when he describes Chris being stabbed to death came as a total shock. I was outraged that a movie would do that. Apparently it wouldn't, but it made the movie even more impactful to see it that way.

Madison, this is probably one of the best and definitely the most faithful of the Stephen King adaptations put to film. Rob Reiner really knocked it out of the park. I'm sure you enjoyed "Stand By Me" and I'm glad you got to experience it. Can't wait to see your reaction! 🙂👍

Faithful? Yes I agree. But only because when they try a word for word adaptation. Stephen King doesn't adapt well. Too many emotions that can't be depicted on screen. This one went for the feeling of the story over the word. That's why it succeeded. It also showed people how to do Stephen King. And we got some great movies.

Will Wheaton's (Gordie) real life sadly mirrored the fictional Gordie's. He had a Father who he felt never loved him and resented him for supporting the family with his acting career. Wheaton's siblings could do no wrong in his Father's eyes, but Wheaton was abused. His relationship with his Mom was equally strained. As an adult, he wrote a letter to his parents in an effort to become a family again. His parents took months to reply and basically expressed that they felt any problems were his doing He no longer has any contact with his parents, but is happily married with kids

This short story is in the same collection of 4 called "Different Seasons"....the same book as "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption." I really miss my friends from when I was a kid. Of course none of us are in contact but they taught me a lot. They taught me that they were the ones who helped me live the best time of my life. I miss them and always remember them. Great reaction as always to a great, great movie.

The summer I turned twelve was perhaps the happiest time of my life. I just loved playing with all the neighborhood kids. There were about eight of us who just hung out together all the time, just doing kid stuff from morning til night. Night time was the best. I loved that group of kids so much. It's fifty years later and I'm not friends (in real life/Facebook doesn't count) with anyone from that group, other than my sister. It's amazing how people who are so important to you can eventually disappear from your life. I think this movie capture the essence of that so well.

Another thoughtful reflection, especially your comments on small town life. I not only grew up in a semi-rural community myself but in this same time period, so I find much to relate to - not quite as dramatic of course. There's a promo video out there somewhere of Ben E King doing the title song featuring the boys. It was the breakthrough role for the ill-fated River Phoenix. Who knows what he might have achieved had he lived. Nice one, Madison, still rockin' it.

I strongly relate this novella and this movie to the month of August, to the end of summer in all that implies. It's an end of innocence. In the book _Different Seasons_ it was King's :"autumn" tale and I believe the movie was released in August. The movie is great regardless of the month you view it. Spike Lee even admitted recently that _Stand By Me_ was one of his favorite films. Thank you for posting this wonderful video and letting me watch this with you, Madison. The most remarkable thing about it is how once upon a time, parents would not only let their children out of their sight for five minutes, but for an entire weekend. When I was a boy growing up in Houston, me and my friends set out to explore woods and train tracks by ourselves and were gone hours at a time.

This cast was incredible. Wil Wheaton was Wesley Crusher in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation. River Phoenix who played Chris was a very talented actor that died way too soon. He was in Indiana Jones 3. His brother is Joaquin Phoenix. Jerry O’Connell is a very talented actor and grew up to be quite handsome. Corey Feldman who played Teddy was in Goonies and Lost Boys. John Cusack a well known actor played Gordie’s brother who died in the movie. This cast was exceptional and cudos to Rob Reiner who directed it. A fun note; Kiefer Sutherland did not fraternize with the young kid actors because he wanted to encourage their unease around him. Another movie along this same genre is The Sand Lot. Another great cast.

The friends I had that age was so very important to me, They turned on me once we went to high school and they did indeed become faces in the hallway. Cut to almost 30 years later i discovered one of them were writing stories and told the tale of how they turned on me, I wrote a comment to it and low and behold we struck up an internet friendship after forgiving something I held onto so many years. Two years ago the one that wrote the story passed away from covid.. someone whom i hadnt talked to for almost 30 years and hated during that time, became a good friend once more and I miss him.

Me being of generation X people really don't know if they're not a male and from that generation how much this movie deeply affected us how much we loved it and how much It became a part of our culture in my generation. This movie is only in second place to top gun as influencing my generation when we were young. Every friend I know Has a copy of this movie in someway that they still have. Truly a great coming of age and how even generation X, a generation after what is shown here was mostly the same growing up as our fathers generation did. Such a great and timeless movie. And a good reaction even though I don't think you really can understand this movie unless you are a boy or male.

What makes this such a great story, in my opinion, is that it cuts across the ageist narrative that adults are great just because they are older. Chris comes from an abusive household...and has wisdom. His teacher is unethical. Gordie's parents can no longer function after a traumatic loss, and arguably weren't functioning before it either. Denny is what we all want in an older sibling.

Hi Madison! Actually, this is the 4th film by Rob Reiner that you've reacted to so far. You also did "When Harry Met Sally". Now, you just have to do "The Princess Bride", "This is Spinal Tap", and "The Sure Thing" and you will have covered his amazing initial run of 7 great movies in a row from his debut in 1984 with "This is Spinal Tap" to "A Few Good Men" in 1992. Unfortunately, he mostly lost his touch after that, with a couple of arguable exceptions, but he was a great director in his prime.
