Written, recorded, and released by Ben E. King in 1961, the song was inspired by the gospel song Stand By Me Father, by the Soul Stirrers and Johnnie Taylor. The song was a hit in the 1960s, reaching No.1 in the R&B charts. it was re-released in 1986, as the sound track of the iconic movie of the same title, starring River Phoenix. A number of artists have since covered the song, with the most popular version since the original, released by John Lennon in 1975, for the album Rock n' Roll.
