I wanted to take a few moments and talk about the differences between Stand On lawn mowers vs Zero Turn lawn mowers. I know a lot of you guys have zero turn mowers out there, but lately stand on mowers have been taking the market by storm.
I wanted to help explain the differences between each unit out there for you guys, and share with you the pros and cons. Not every application makes sense for a zero turn, nor for a stander. You have to decide what works best for your business.
I feel the cliff notes version is a zero turn is great for wide open fields and properties, while stand on units have been making gains with folks who have smaller properties and subdivisions.
I know there are a ton of units and a ton of brands out there when it comes to lawn mowers. Leave us a comment down below on which mower style you prefer and WHY! Hopefully this can be a great resource for the community, and help people decide on their next mower purchase!

THIS IS Like Vanilla OR Chocolate Body type; weight; coordination Lots of variables. Which is less maintenance, most productive, best warranty, best dealer. How about tires Width, Diameter, tread design bias-ply vs radial vs tweel shorts vs longs vs ticks 😨 Bottom Line: you'll need both. That's why they are Professionals Off Subject: any Kubota dealers near you?

I'm 64 years old and still prefer a stand-on. Easier to get on and off, easier to control just using my hands instead of arms. Easier when mowing under tree limbs - no roll bar and I can get lower squatting/ducking down than I can when I lean over on my Skag Cheetah. I'm not a pro, just a homeowner that mows a few acres.

You pretty much nailed it. Stander is much more versatile. Almost nothing they can't do. But for leaf removal and big fairly flat wide open spaces a zero turn is definitely the way to go. I rolled a 60" Dixie Chopper with all of the safety switches off straight backwards and was looking up at the bottom of the deck with the blades on at full throttle. Scariest moment of my life. No more taking a zero turn on hills for me.

Brian I demoed them both and see a place from them both in the lawn industry. I was looking to cut my own property and maybe a few accounts. The stander felt less natural to a beginner like me. I was worried about hills and inclines because a cut a few on my own property and my neighbors. I found out its all about the width of the machine and tires. Once I added bigger and wider tires it handles hills and inclines like a stander with a seat lol. I enjoy cutting much more and not scared to be riding those hills and inclines. Thanks for all you do for us. Still liking that Ferris stander thou😀

So having just cut several times with my new Wright Stander, I am finally able to angle cut my front yard because the front to back distance is so short on the stander. I can turn around on a dime and am now able to do so much more with this mower in tight spaces than before. It's amazing. Thanks Brian....

I love the standard. In love with the scag vride with that advantage deck. I am small and do about 30 accounts. Mostly residential with a few 2 acre properties. I love the compact size which saves space on the trailer and I can save time mowing ditches versus a sit down. Also there is a company that makes a vacuum bagging system for stand-ons. Great video

I think you did a great comparison. I’ve been mowing for 18 plus years, starting with the exmark turf ranger then to the lazers, I really never paid much attention to the stand ons before but after seeing you demo them it might be something to look at adding in the future.

Great video Brian , I have one each , I’m on my second toro grandstand 2800 hrs on the first . I use the stander mostly . Great for ditches and slopes. Your right. It’s about preference. And definitely need a good bagging system for fall.so the zero turn is great for that . The grandstand has come out with a full bagging system. That’s all I know. This is a great industry and I think guys like you are helping make it a respected and professional industry. Keep it up.

Hey Brian as always great video. I've been using a 60 zero turn. Many of my properties are several acres. Yesterday I had the opportunity to demo a Ferris 52 stander and fell in love. So much more nimble and honestly the bigger properties I got finished just as fast. A little tricky at first. I'm also 53 and have a bad knee and mowed some very rough property's. After adjusting the platform and lowering the air pressure on the tires it rode great. It was much better on my back. I pulled a 12 hr day and wasn't any more tired than normal. I think it would make sense to have one of each but I have a feeling I'll use the stander more.

This comment. I agree 100% with this statement. The Stander is perfect for the smaller properties, or groups of them. Granny yards and so forth. The Zero is better for those open expanses where you're going to be mowing for awhile, such as large church lawns or farm properties.

Both have their place for me...I love stand-ons for smaller properties or areas where we aren’t mowing for more than a few minutes, but the zero-turns shine on larger properties (we mow a couple that are 20+ acres).

I think that both are must haves in our industry. If you're working on both residential and commercial. It just makes sense to have both. Kind of like having a short bush trimmer vs a pole bush trimmer. Depending on the job it just depends on the right tool for the job.

Hey Brian! Great video as always man. I personally prefer a sit on z-turn. Prefer the sit down because you can be less fatigue at the end of the day and they are much better on hills. Also since I can get the bigger engines that's a huge plus. And since the decks come from anywhere from 32' to 109' their is a deck for every application. One of the down sides though is visibility. But keep up the great work brother, God bless ya!!

I think that it's good to use both. I have both and I find that the sit down hurts my lower back after a few hours and stand on gives relief on your back but stress on the legs and hands after a while . I've learned alternating mowers works best. I will cut a few yards sitting and then switch back .

I have never had a set down z turn. My stand on Deere 636m is my first commercial mower. Lawncare is a side hustle for me but I made my choice due to being 53 when I bought. I agree with everything you said in this video. I have been in lawn business for 15 years and always said I would never use a stander, well this spring I decided to get a Exmark Vantage because I’m a Exmark fan lol, because of some small back yards I have picked up over the winter. Since getting that machine and running it, I have fell in love with it and have let my Lazer Z set on trailer. So much quicker and comfortable on and off machine and trash cleanup. I will be trading my Lazer in on a Vantage with a 60” deck real soon. The Vantage I recently purchased was a 48” deck. I will eventually only have one sit down mower and that will be my 72” deck for large properties.

I wrestled with this question when I bought my cheetah n v ride 2. The answer for me was both, but if you’re not in the position I would say a 52” stander is a good machine to tackle a lot of properties. Anything with many obstacles stander is the way to go, anything wide open 1/2” n up ztr! Like always nothing over 1100lbs too. Lightweight is the future of mowers.

I got my own lawn care company and work for one. I have a 42 inch cub cadet zero turn I’m only two years in. And the company I work for had two Wright standers a 36 and 52. As a newer lawn care guy for me the 42 cub zero was way easier to learn. The stander definitely took some time to feel comfortable with but once I got the hang of it I fell in love. I’m saving for a 52 Bradley stander now

if you have a grab stick, you don't even have to get off of the mower. on trashier properties i'll carry it with me, but i'm thinking about rigging up a mount to carry it on my rider all the time. even on clean yards, you'll sometimes encounter a piece of trash or two you don't want to run over.

The Ferris Z3X 72 is surprisingly comfortable ride. You might want to demo one. With your diabetes, the exercise for your legs would be good for you, and the suspension platform takes most of the shock out of your knees. Cut quality is on-par (if not better) than your Bobcat.

I think to put it this way I certainly love mowing my lawn and neighbors lawns. I usually use my Scag Cheetah 72 and my employees use the Scag V Ride 2 61 and Scag V Ride 48. I even had a vision I was on the Dixie Chopper Xcaliber 74 (if Dixie was still around though). Many times my employees and I use the Exmark and Toro 30 mowers for the smaller lawns and we do walk a lot. I think for me If I have to do the bigger parts on my lawn or neighbors lawns thats usually good for the Cheetah 72 I let my employees mow the parts that aren't too big. I usually don't mow the slopes with the Cheetah that I leave it to my employees on the V Ride and V Ride 2. Great video Brian.

This should be titled "Sit-Down vs Stand-On Mowers". Zero-turn just means that you can control each wheel individually so that the turning radius is effectively zero, allowing the mower to turn within its own footprint, and doesn't have anything to do with whether the mower is a sit-down, stand-on, or walk-behind, all of which are available in zero-turn configurations.

I havent been able to try a stander yet. However, most of the technology you were referring to that is new on the standers, is also available on the zero turns from the same manufacturer. (Velocity deck, 37 hp Vanguard, oilguard, etc) As far as comfort goes. YOU NEED TO DEMO A FERRIS 3200 SERIES ZERO TURN. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Especially since you have recently been able to demo the standon equivalent from them.

Stand on all the way!! My dad and I have a Z2 and 2 Z3x’s And we both love them. The Z2 is a 54 in deck which is good for more residentials and then the Z3x is a 61 in deck. With both Z3’s we cover a lot more ground when we are mowing our big commercial properties. Along with just the ride quality of the Z3 is outstanding. The stand on’s are just a whole lot more efficient when it comes to saving time and energy but still having good quality of work.

Stand on for me, firstly because I need a 36inch for my back yards, you have better vision for what’s ahead, more compact for room in the trailer, you don’t have to constantly get up when picking up trash, or pulling the chute up when entering a tight space, also dust doesn’t go right in your face. Zero turn would be my choice if I had primarily huge commercial properties, and steep inclines they are the best.

IMO you hit the most important pros for the Zero Turns and that's the Vac systems and the feathering of the deck !! And my last comment is why are you never wearing shorts mowing on a zero turn ??? Depends on how much you mow, smaller residential lots stand on all day, but for the bigger 1 acre lots sit down, I just finished demoing the z3x 72” but didn’t like how bouncing it got on my maintenance lots, I’m going to look at the hustler hyperdrive next, but you need 1 of each, I have both and each have its purpose

Just came across this video . I’m just about to purchase my first ride/stand on mower. I’m going to go with a stand on mostly due to the fact 95% of my lawns are 6500sq ft or less and most have 36” gates.

I enjoy the walk behinds just because I'm a tall guy and can move quickly. But zero turn hands down for speed, the bagger on our gravely proturn works like a dream as well, 950hrs going strong. 48in deck will get anywhere you need with a zero turn, and that's even with a bagger on the back. This being said I'm fairly biased as I haven't used stand on mowers at all. But I like sitting.

Also thought I should add another pro for the zero turn is the motor sits behind you so it keeps the exhaust more out of the way than a stand on.

I'd like to go with stand on for my next mower. For one, hopping on and off the mower is time consuming withe a zero turn. Also it seems the stand on is more compact providing more space on a trailer, depending on what size you get.

Brian another great video as usual. I would say that it’s pretty spot on. The price point is negligible though as my Lazer-Z E series was 9 grand brand new similar to a Vantage or Ferris as demoed. Also the seat is almost standard in the E-series now as mine came with it. But I think for a diversified business attack and approach you will need both honestly. I did notice in a lot of your videos you don’t have fenced yards (presuming you have some). That is where the stand on will come in play. As usual keep up the solid content. Also where did you get the trash grabber bracket at? I need one.. If business keeps it up as it has this year I’m going to get a Vantage at the end of the season and then possibly the big BEAST that Exmark makes! Have a great one!!!

The little grabber guy I got at my dealer, it was maybe $10 bux. The bracket was from Jungle Jims accessories, they sell them online. No promo codes for them, sorry! And actually, I have zero gated back yards. I dropped them all 3 years ago, best decision I ever made (for my biz model).

Brian's Lawn Maintenance thank you for the heads up there. Do people often ask you to do fenced yards quite often and how do you go about declining them? Reason I ask is I’m going to have to reconsider my operations at the end of the year. I’m a solo guy running about 53 yards this year on my days off from the firehouse and doing army stuff. I’m gonna have to break down and possibly get a helper I think. Also on another side note (yardbooks) is a giant game changer for me and their XL route optimizer. Great video on that too!!

I just bought my first zero turn the other day and love it to bits! I think the idea of a stand on would be interesting but they are quite rare here in Australia and very expensive even for a 36" so I'm yet to try one. Yes you have the convenience of picking stuff up easily I guess as many people have mentioned but on a big property with virtually no rubbish at all I can't see too much of a point over sit downs. I really like my current mower because it has a very nice seat and I already spend most of my time standing up so being able to sit down is something I love. Not sure what you meant with the shorts on stander vs sit down comment though, I wear shorts 99% of the time when I'm working whether it's summer, winter or anywhere in between and don't really have any troubles. Maybe its just that I'm used to stuff being flung at my legs while trimming lol

I have been landscaping for 7 years and have used standers since day 1. Started with a 52" wright stander, then when that blew up the company bought a 61" wright zk, this machine was 100% worth the price tag. We have many larger lawns and it shreds through them. We have always had the 36" walk behind in thetrailer, which is a necessity on 3 jobs, unfortunately. Once the company got big enough to add a third mower to the trailer the decision was a no brainer, stander it was. We got the 52" Wright intensity. (Would have gotten the X but the dealer did not have any, and we needed it that day, lesson learned; dont rush, and always have a backup mower) the intensity is just too light, so the traction on hills is to be desired. (Other than that it is a fantastic mower) standers are the only way to go, in my opinion. They are easier on the back, way more compact, and way more maneuverable. The demos and borrowing of riders that I have used is just not worth the extra space. I also must h prefer the controls of the weight to the Toro, they are much more intuitive, in my opinion, but I started on Wrights, so it might just be my bias.

I started my business when I was 13 in my neighborhood and I have used a 22 inch push mower my whole life. Yes, I only had 3 or 4 accounts back then, but, now that I’m 15, my business has snow balled. I cut about 18-20 yards a week... still with a 22 inch push mower. So I’m walking the whole time, and I just get tired too fast. So, I think I will have say a zero turn is what I will be getting soon. I did demo a couple standers and a couple zero turns and I like the zero turns a bit better.

I 100% agree with Lucas, a walk behind is where it’s gonna be at for you. The eX-Mark Turf Tracer is really hard to beat, they are awesome on hills. I like the Scag Pro V because of the handlebar controls vs the pistol grip controls, but the Scag doesn’t hold a ditch line or hill like the Turf Tracer does. Plus you can get a stand on attachment for them for your bigger yards, which just lifts out of the way when you need to walk it instead of ride it.

Just got a Wright ZK 52” and if you are cutting 5 acres or less this is the way to go. Less fatigue on the back when you go over bumps, better turning around ability so actually I was able to get more jobs done faster with a smaller deck. My other mower was a Exmark 60” sit down and I would take the ZK over it any day.

Bought a stand on (V-Ride 48 deck) to replace a tractor, I know, not a zero turn, for a lot size of approximately 3/4 acre with trees, stone edging and plants along the edge of the lawn. Property slopes about 10 feet toward one side and the stability on slopes, both up and down and across is excellent. For me the natural hand position eliminates shoulder movement as I have issues with both shoulders. Visibility is excellent as you can see all 4 corners of the unit and once you get accustomed to the way the front wheels swivel you can get around obstacles easily. First time out drove the 48 inch deck machine through a 50 inch gate opening without ever touching the posts, although I did reduce speed but did not reduce to a crawl. What took 90 minutes now is done in 60 with far less hand edge trimming. Much easier on the body than sitting down and bouncing around. A neighbor with a Wright sit on can not navigate areas that I can but his is a 52 inch deck. Easy on and off to pick up debris is also a handy feature. Run the tires a few pounds lower than recommended and have never torn up the turf, even when the ground is soft.

I've been running a lawncare and landscaping company for 8 years now and we started with a residential sit down Murray for 1,000 new. It lasted all of half my first season. Next was a residential zero turn John Deer and residential Husqvarna. Fast forward 8 years. Back hoes, track loaders and half a million in equipment. We have all stand on Ferris mowers on 1 truck. 36. Z1x stander, 48 Z2x stander, 72 Z3x stander. 2nd truck is the second way just with scag and a few differences in deck sizes. At the shop we keep 2 sit down Exmark mowers as back up and the landscaping crews use them on jobs at times. We also keep 1 extra 36 inch ferris Stand on mower as a back up, 30 inch Exmark push and a Kobalt electric push. Stand on mowers increased production and we cut on average 3 to 5 more yards a day using stand on mowers vs sit downs, happier employees, employee retention, because you can cut me 3 to 5 more yards using standers vs sit down mowers means I can pay crew leaders significantly more money with a monthly bonus if they don't call out and don't get complaints. They are less fatigued and every employee I have prefers a stand on mower over a sit down mower unless it's leaf season because they will use the sit down mowers like little bull dozers and push the leaf piles to the road for pick up. This is not just my opinion this is mine and 2 crew leaders and 2 others that run mowers. 5 votes for stand on mowers here.

Kind of a thought, i run a 36” wb, 36” stand on, and 48” ztr. That work perfectly for my accounts. But i run stand on unit on about 75% of them. Due to small gates, smaller yards, or lots of obstacles. It’s actually more maneuverable thrn my wb. But the purchase of the stand on opened up alot more opportunities due to less time on properties then with the wb. They all have their places

It depends, if you are mowing a lot of commercial property where there would be trash and/or it’s a small quick yard I would go with a stand on mower. If you mow a lot of lots and large yards go with sit down mowers. Me personally I use a sit down, because I mow a lot of lots and large yards.

I’ve never driven a stand on, and personally I would probably choose it over sit on if I could. I mow several family owned lots and they get trash all the time, along with plenty of ruts. It’s a much more work getting on and off with my sit on, and I have to do it constantly to pick up chunks of metal. I also normally lose the feeling in my legs after mowing from all the bumps, not to mention the weird feeling of slapping your sweat soaked shirt back onto that lawn mower. I lack the ability to pick up trash quickly, the ability to let my legs help absorb the shock from bumps, and the ability to let my back vent and in turn sweat less. I would suggest that if your body can handle standing for 10 acres of mowing, to go with a stand on, we should have gotten one to begin with.
