Awesome vid. Thanks for taking the time and being patient enough for us new owners. If my Macbook is hooked up to its sound system via, can I take a cord (Stereo 1/4" Y cable > 1/8" ) out of my MPC and go into the headphone jack of my Macbook and use this jack as the input source so I can play and listen to the MPC along side the Macbook to audio out without an audio interface just for writing and monitoring purposes? Also the only DAW you mention is MPC watch all makes sense but what if you use a DAW like Logic? What would the work flow and settings be in terms of writing beats using Logic (or any external DAW) alongside MPC (I want to add MPC drum groove in my logic track I did back in the day.) Thanks bro.

I’m loving my new MPC X! I only use it in standalone because that’s why I bought it. I have Maschine if I wanna work the other way. I also have Studio One on the DAW side of things. I have an external SSD drive, plus a thumb drive and SD card as well so I got plenty storage and everything. You’re right about it really being a computer. I would say the MPC is actually the true definition of hybrid. It’s a computer with actual hardware all in one. The regular Maschine is nothing but a paperweight until you plug it into the computer. It won’t do shit! I chose the X because I’m not really into going outside and making music lol! When I’m outside I do outside shit! 😂

It depends. For example if you have a SSD or a SD card or whatever you chose to use installed in your MPC you can still use that storage location in Controller Mode. That is what I do. You can save it to the computer if you want to but I keep everything on the 2TB SSD I have installed inside my MPC. In the case of the MPC One it will be an External Drive, an SD Card, or a Flash Drive.

My biggest issue is I feel like I wasted my money on the MPC-X. IMO using Beats software and an MPD218 you have the pads and the software making the X obsolete.
@GhettoStyles

If you feel like that makes the X obsolete then you might not be using the X properly. It gives you a built in audio interface and a lot of I/O the MPD does not have with a built in drive bay for storage and it is expandable through USB.

very informative, thank you. Could the MPC One be used in controller mode with Cubase for MIDI and used as an audio interface?
@GhettoStyles
@GhettoStyles Жыл бұрын
All of the current MPC can also be used as audio interfaces for any DAW. Cubase happens to be my DAW of choice. When using the MPC with Cubase there are multiple ways to do it. #1 you can have the MPC in controller mode and you can open the MPC software inside of Cubase as a VST or a Rack Instrument. You can select the MPC as the audio interface as well which will run all audio through the MPC and you can set that up however you want in your Cubase I/O settings. You can also have the MPC in standalone and use a MIDI track in the MPC to a MIDI track in Cubase using USB MIDI, Standard MIDI Cables, or wireless WIFI Network MIDI. It is very versatile in that regard. In my current setup I’m using Cubase with a Scarlett 18i20 interface but I have a Cubase template setup that automatically opens the MPC software in controller mode as a rack instrument.

Hey man. thanks, this was really helpful. There's one problem I still have though... When I am in controller mode, I cannot get the "clips" (sequencer mode) to play the same as they would in standalone mode.. Normally, in standalone, I would hit pads in a "clip" kit and they start playing loops; but for some reason in controller mode, when I hit pads in a clip kit nothing happens. I'm using logic pro x by the way; every regular kit works.. just not the sequence loops for some reason. If you could help me that would be amazing!
@GhettoStyles
@GhettoStyles 2 жыл бұрын
Essentially everything works the same in controller mode and standalone. I’m not exactly sure what you mean when you say the “clips” won’t play. The MPC does have a “Clip Launcher” function for playing loops in a way similar to Ableton but that is totally different from a sequence. Sequences are like the house for everything inside the beat. Sequences are very powerful. Each sequence could be an entire beat if you want it to be from start to finish or each sequence can be a specific part of a beat. Sequences play when you hit the play button on the MPC not from hitting pads unless you are using the “Next Sequence” function.
@didnotplay

@@GhettoStyles Hey man. Thank you so much for your response - I'm quite new to the AKAI MPC world and finding it all a bit daunting haha; so I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my comment. Yes sorry I now realize my question was a bit confusing as a sequence is a different thing in the MPC; what I meant was indeed the "clip launcher" function you mentioned. There's a few "clip launching" kits I like, and I can play them fine in standalone mode, or even in controller mode within the MPC software on my mac... But for some reason when I try to do the same thing in Logic Pro (using the MPC software as a plugin), nothing happens when I hit the pads.. The loops just don't get activated and no sound comes out (whereas other regular "non clip launching" drum kits work fine) If you could help it would be amazing as this problem is driving me crazy haha! Btw I've watched a few of your vids and finding them really helpful! Thanks for the great content man!
@GhettoStyles
@GhettoStyles 2 жыл бұрын
@@didnotplay Ok cool. I understand now. First thing to remember when using the MPC as a plugin is the DAW is in total control of the MPC. In your case it is Logic. Some of the normal MPC functions work slightly different when used as a VST for instance the transport controls will start and stop playback in the MPC ONLY and not the DAW unless you change your MIDI routing. Now to the Clip Launcher. It does work in Logic when used as a VST but as you said if you load your Clip Set and hit the pads nothing seems to happen. The important step your are missing is in Logic because Logic is the MASTER. You have to set your loop length (if you don't want it to go on forever) and start play in Logic. Once Logic is playing then you can hit the pads on the MPC and launch your Clips and they will play in sync with the DAW at whatever tempo the DAW is set to.

I am more into long form composition with orchestra, synth, keys and guitars (acoustic and electric) rather than music that is broken down into short bars and loops. I also do singer songwriter stuff. But I watched your video all the way through because you are such a good teacher. I may as well admit I am not well versed in computers. I am not opposed to learning a daw but I'm interested in mpc because it looks like the key 61 has a lot of good sounds and it appears to be the only hardware thing on the market that has its own daw. I have been wishing Korg would release a native Kronos daw I could use with my prized Kronos but I don't think that looks like it is happening soon. My Kronos is 88 key weighted, I love how it feels and sounds, but I have yet to wrap my head around its sequencer and audio recording, both of which capabilities I need. It is common wisdom among keyboard players that if you can afford it you should have one board weighted and one unweighted, this is why I am so interested in mpc key 61. Kronos does have aftertouch but despite its price I simply don't have the strength to use it, at its lowest setting you still have to mash it like hell. Another reason to want a second keyboard. Alternative to mpc I could just start investing in software like crazy and a relatively cheap controller board. I dunno. Just watching this video I think I can really respect your take on it all. So what advice do you have for me?
@GhettoStyles
@GhettoStyles 2 жыл бұрын
The first thing I have to say is sorry for the delay. I'm just now seeing this comment. I try to respond to everyone but I get a lot sometimes. Next I don't think you will have a hard time playing the MPC Key 61. The keys are not fully weighted but they do feel pretty good to me. I have had keyboard that feel a lot worse and springy. I cannot remember the total recording/sequence limit but I believe it to be around 4 hours. Please don't quote me on that. It's been a long time since I looked at that spec line. If you are unfamiliar with the MPC there will probably be a learning curve but the good thing is that for the most part the MPC Key 61 works the same way the other MPCs work like the MPC X, Live 2, Live, and the MPC One. What that means is many tutorials on the other MPC Devices you might find will be applicable to the MPC Key 61 with the exception of different button layouts. The underlying software is the same across these devices. The MPC Key 61 is also a sampler just like the other MPCs and it has 8 audio tracks in Standalone that you could record vocals or live guitars to if you want. As far as recreating an orchestra it is possible but it will probably take a few workarounds if you are going to be working in Standalone. In standalone the MPC Key has 8 MIDI tracks and 8 Audio tracks. You can utilize more tracks if you take the time to bounce your MIDI tracks to audio then change that MIDI track to a different instrument. This is a crude workaround for more tracks but in theory you could get up to 1028 tracks this way. It is a lot of work to do this though. If you would like to try out the Akai ecosystem for a lot less than the Key 61 you could get a small MIDI Keyboard for under $200 and either get the FREE version of MPC BEATS or pay $100-$200 on the full version of the software depending on if you catch it on sale and get a similar experience I think the Key 61 is a great device but I won't tell you to rush out and buy one but if you are familiar with the MPC work flow it is almost a no brainer.

Peace fam..✊🏿..I seriously need your help. I have the mpc live, apc40, zoom L12, keylab essential 49, hp laptop with abelton 11 software and analog lab4. Trying to find a good workflow within abelton's software. My 2 sons both play instruments obe is a percussionist, the other a saxophonist, I play native American flute, some keys, and acoustic guitar. I'm having issues making all this work. Especially for recording the acoustic and wind instruments. I purchased abelton 11 main for the unlimited audio tracks but the setup has truly given me gray hairs. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First of all salute to you and your musical 🎶 family. Secondly I do have Ableton but I’m not very good with it. My DAW of choice is Cubase however I have heard and seen great things with Ableton. Depending on exactly how you want to record all of these instruments you can have an extremely extensive setup with Ableton and just about ANY DAW. If you want to record all of these instruments simultaneously you will need a hefty mixer or an audio interface with a lot of inputs. Sax 🎷guitar and Flute can be recorded with one microphone 🎙️. Piano 🎹 is usually recorded with a stereo pair of microphones 🎤 and drum 🥁 sets I have seen with up to 12 microphones on bigger sets. The DAW can be set to record all of these instruments simultaneously if you have a capable mixer/audio interface and your computer can handle it. Otherwise you can record each instrument one at a time with a smaller more cost efficient audio interface.

Indeed, I have a zoom L12 as my mixer/ audio interface which would let me record us simultaneously while we jam out. It's a standalone device all by it self but this abelton 11 is very powerful. I'm used to Daws but I broke down and got the mpc live for its bells and whistles. It's the L12 and the Live I'm trying to get cooperating inside of abelton 11 software. I just finally got the mpc live to work as a plugin in the software. The idea would be to have the live in control mode and micing all the instruments through the zoom L12.

@@looseenz3473 ok. In that case you can use the L12 as your audio interface like you planned. Once that is selected with Ableton all of the L12 inputs and outputs for your various microphones. Then connect your MPC with the blue USB cable and put it in controller mode and open it on an instrument track as a plugin. You will then have access to every single device input and the MPC.

Hey man quick question, I was using my MPC in controller mode, while in controller mode connected to my PC I changed the name of file folder containing a few projects. After re-naming it the folder disappeared along with the projects. Is there any way I can locate the mentioned folder and projects? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

The renamed folder should still be there unless you changed the file extension. In most cases you can sort folders by alphabetical order to find them.

Also anyone...I found out how to go to my Live2 system settings to set up my MPC to control my DAW transport In terms of PLAY>STOP>FF>RR, etc to use the Live as the master controller but Ive spent an hour looking for the page to save the new setting. Every time I turn my MPC off it defaults to factory mode which won't trigger my DAW. HOW DO YOU SAVE THE ADJUSTED SETTING so every time I use the MPC it auto triggers my DAW without me having to go through the adjustments over and over? Please be detailed because Ive been through every page looking for "SAVE SYSTEM PARAMETERS". Nothing. And further please show me in the manual where it tells you how to do this. A 12 pack of your favorite beer if you can point to the explanation. I did scour the manual before I bothered you.

What DAW are you trying to control? That information would be helpful. If it is the MPC Software on the computer then you simply just switch the MPC to CONTROLLER MODE aka COMPUTER MODE.

@@GhettoStyles Im using Logic and I got the Live2 to sync the transport, what I cant do is save the changes I made inside the MPC system menu so it's the new default. I cant find the "Save system" page to lock in the new changes so I dont have to go through the parameters every time I'm ready to start.

@@phunkfarm ok. First I do have a few videos showing some things you can do with the MPC and logic. If you want it set the way you are trying to use it you probably won’t be able to get the most possible out of the MPC. Now if you still want to use it like that you just create a project file and save it as a template. You can then set it as your default template if you like. Otherwise to use the full capabilities of the MPC you can control logic with the MPC in standalone like in this video: Using The MPC as a MIDI Controller for Logic kzbin.infoq1YzDQtVQU0?feature=share. Also in addition to that the MPC can be opened in CONTROLLER MODE as a VST inside of Logic. There is really many ways to use it.

@@GhettoStyles Got it. I wasn't so interested in triggering Logic like you did but more interested in using the MPC as the transport master to sync the song I wrote in logic previously to my MPC drum track. I just want them to talk.
@GhettoStyles
@GhettoStyles Жыл бұрын
@@phunkfarm in that case you can sync it with the MPC in Standalone like I shown in that short video through MIDI cables and in the MPC you will need to turn on MIDI Machine Control (MMC) and turn or receive MMC and send MIDI clock. Make sure MIDI ports are set to SYNC. As long as your connections are correct it will work. All of this is in the MPC in the MIDI/SYNC tab in PREFERENCES.
