Mr. Andersen, you saved my life in 15 minutes with this tutorial! If I were going to have more children I would not hesitate to name them after you. I looked at this twice, and was able to solve the second problem and get it right! I looked countless other videos and all I got was crickets. The way you explained it will be easier to understand when testing time comes around. I have always had a fear of math, but I have never felt more confident since finding your lectures. I am 46, and I have 5 classes left before I graduate with a degree in Health Information Technology next spring. Whoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks was severely incorrect. Once again, I thank you and bow in your direction!

Well this is one of the best videos out there but for people who want direct direct steps here ya go: Step 1: Find the mean in your data. (Add all up, Divide by how many values) Step 2: Subtract the mean from each value of your data, and square the answer. Do this for all values Step 3: Add up all results from new values, and divide by how many values (Should be same No. of values from step 1) Step 4: Square root the answer you got from step 3. The answer you get is the standard deviation

Teacher, you have done a great job, don't forget to use parenthesis before squaring the numbers. For example, if you have negative 2 with an exponent 2 without a parenthesis, the answer is negative four (-4). On the other hand, if you use a parenthesis (-2) with an exponent 2, the answer is positive 4.
@slavoie6 жыл бұрын
Robert is right. Those are two different notations that produce different results. " -2 ² " is equivalent to " (-1) * (2)² " which is not the same thing as " (-2) ² ".

It helped me and my team with what we needed. I thank you very much.

Just wanted to say thanks. I'm in a stats class now and the professor explained the process, but I couldn't get the answers. I think I realized that I wasn't dividing by the full value of N or n-1 based on the instructions in the question. I enjoyed being able to do the equation by hand and then see the answer; it helped me track through my steps and see where I went wrong. Appreciate this!

@sayantiacharyya21084 жыл бұрын
When sample size is less than 30, the formula with n-1 is used.. If the sample size is more than 30,only n is used.
@forgedwithsteel4 жыл бұрын
@@sayantiacharyya2108 why though?
@oscarmantecon53544 жыл бұрын
@@forgedwithsteel My professor said if there's 30 chairs but you're sitting in a chair, then at that moment there's only 29 other chairs you can go sit at. So degrees of freedom is (n-1), hence how many chairs are free. If more than 30 chairs, n-1 would skew the data and make it inaccurate, hence for bigger populations, n-1 isn't used. Hope this helps :D.

Standard deviation: The 5 step process. 1. Figure out what the mean/average (will use the word mean going forward) is from the given data set. 2. Subtract each entity in the data set 'from the mean' 3. For each one of the resultant entities, apply square. 4. Add up the numbers and divide again by the total number of instances. (Figure out the mean one more time) 5. When you get the mean again, apply square root. --> And that's your 'standard deviation' Important to note: There are two types of standard deviation --> libweb.surrey.ac.uk/library/skills/Number%20Skills%20Leicester/page_19.htm So, for the entirety of the dataset you divide by the number of entities. For a sample dataset within a given dataset, --> Total number of entities minus 1. (See link)
