Hi, I' m Chimahaga, Kintugi repairer based in Tokyo🇯🇵.
In this video, I explain the process of repairing broken ceramics which have cracks and missing fragments by Kintsugi.
[Please note]
This method can only be done with the tools and materials in my kit.
This method cannot be used with other kits such as the following
・Kits that do not use urushi
・Kits with bengara in powder form

[Food Safe]
This is a traditional Japanese kintsugi using natural urushi.
It is not an alternative kintsugi technique using resins such as epoxy, so it is a food-safe method that can be used safely on tableware.

If you have any questions regarding the kintsugi procedure, please ask them in the Kintsugi Forum on my official website. chimahaga.com/community/my/kintsugi-forum I have not been able to check the KZbin comments recently because there are too many, so I will not be able to answer your questions here.

So cool. I know that gold powder can’t be cheap. I would be keeping the cotton used in the process and after a jar is collected, I would definitely be recollecting the lost gold. I wonder how they powder the gold so fine.

I absolutely love your work-specifically the super smooth and shiny finish of your gold-I’ve recently switched to real gold from brass but now the finish looks very grainy, even when I make sure the underlying layer super smooth. Do you polish it or use some kind of finer gold? Any advice would be much appreciated ☺️

There are many possible causes for a gold surface to become grainy. One possibility is that there is a problem with the underlying layer. Even if the coating is smooth, it is useless if it is not thin enough. If it is not thin enough, it is likely to become grainy. Another possibility is that there is a problem with the grain size of the gold powder. In this video, a type of gold powder with fine particles called keshifun is used. In kintsugi, other types of gold powder with larger particles called marufun are sometimes used. In the case of marufun, it needs to be polished, so the method in this video will not work. Even if keshifun is used, the particle size varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, so it may be useful to consider using gold powder from a different manufacturer.

Amazing, thank you so much!!🙏 I will experiment a bit ☺️ I use turpentine to thin the urushi a bit but perhaps that’s not thin enough still…or not a good method 😅

It is not a good idea to mix telepine with bengara urushi in the finish. It should be applied in a thin layer, not diluted. There may be someone who uses telepine to thin the finish, in which case you should completely imitate that person's method. Partial adoption of various people's methods and tools often does not work.

The work is very beautiful! May I ask, can medome prevent ice crack glaze from staining?

Love this! Would you recommend the method in step 1 for cracks on a surface that isn't glazed?
@chimahaga
@chimahaga 10 ай бұрын
The same approach would be good in that case. However, try to draw the lines even finer than in this video. In this video, I applied a generous amount of urushi because it can be scraped off later without staining, but with unglazed ceramics, the painted area may turn black even after scraping, so apply a thinner paint. It may be better to use bengara urushi than black urushi because bengara urushi is more sticky.

@@user-ky7id1uz2f As a slight correction, the fact that bengara urushi is more sticky is limited to the urushi that I sell. The consistency of urushi varies depending on the manufacturer, so it is difficult to make a general statement.

Can you use the ceramic with kintsugi repair as normal, meaning filling it with water or drinks, tea, coffee or food? Thank you.

Pardon I don't know if someone ask this before, but what alternative do you recommend instead of pure gold or silver? Or it's not possible without them? I wont to use mica or other kind of artificial powder Thank you
