pardon my ignorance, is it "Jigawatt" or "Gigawatt"? Thanks!
@DeLoreanTECH3 жыл бұрын
It's spelled Gigawatt, but either "gigawatt" (hard "g") or "jigawatt" ("j" sound or soft "g") is actually acceptable. The Transformer is named Gigawatt but the pronunciation is "Jigawatt" because that's how Doc Brown says it. According to BTTF.com, an unofficial movie fan site, the subject was addressed in the Special Edition DVD by Bob Gale, the movie’s producer, in his voice-over commentary during the scene with the scale model: "I should talk about jigowatts for a second. The proper pronunciation is, of course, gigawatts [with a hard g sound], and when Bob [Zemeckis] and I were doing research, we talked to somebody who mispronounced it jigowatts. And we were actually completely unfamiliar with the term, and we thought that was how it was supposed to be said. It does come from the Greek root gigas [that Greek root is pronounced with a j sound, not a g sound], for gigantic, so I suppose it’s not beyond the realm of possibility. But never having heard of it, we actually spelled it in the script jigowatt. So a jigowatt is actually supposed to be a gigawatt, a million watts. So the mystery of the gigawatts is now solved." According to Wikipedia, the official National Institute of Standards and Technology pronunciation is with a soft g. The Merriam-Webster dictionary lists two pronunciations: soft g first, then followed by a hard g. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gigawatt It seems Doc Brown was right all along.

I appreciate you doing that. I’d rather just stick with standard one since it’s just box difference

I could see boxed collectors buying both versions, but if someone is going to remove the toy from the box, then I guess it doesn't really matter.

@@OneAndOnlyBilliam No, it doesn't. Incorrect pronunciations don't count as valid ones. The correct way, is the way I implied in my initial comment. You can verify that with a dictionary, which you may or may not own, based on your incorrect spelling of the word "two". ;)
@OneAndOnlyBilliam3 жыл бұрын
@@MrJTBrisson The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary provides two common pronunciations for the scientific term gigawatt. The soft “g” pronunciation is listed first, followed by the hard "g" pronunciation. Prefix Etymology resources list both soft and hard “g” pronunciations. And as far as the incorrect use of the word "two". My autocorrect tends to use the wrong spelling of the word, so my apologies on that one. A simple Google search would've helped from not only looking like an idiot, but also coming off as a dickhead. Do better. :)

@@OneAndOnlyBilliam Is that a "woke" dictionary, revised for "inclusivity"? This isn't a "potato, potahto" debate. Giga (hard g) is correct. Don't care that 2 are listed as valid, since logic points to only 1 pronunciation. Been bastardizing the language for a long time. My version, isn't the bastardized one. You're the only one name-calling - I'll take the high road, thanks...

@@MrJTBrisson well, since you're assuming that I have, or have not, read a Dictionary. Then I'm gonna assume that you have, or have not, paid attention in School, so regardless if you have taken the "High Road" or not, I'll educate you for a bit. The word "Gigawatt" is what we call a Heteronym. Heteronyms are words that are spelled identically but have more than one pronunciation (like Lead or Caramel). Meaning that there is no correct pronunciation when it comes to Heteronyms. Yes, Gigawatt is one way of pronouncing it. But back then, and including the present time, it was also pronounced as Jigawatt. I merely called you an Idiot because that's what you were acting like. And the fact that you tried to compare this to "Woke" or "Inclusivity" makes you an even bigger idiot. Get smarter & you won't be called an Idiot. Simple. 🤷🏻♂
