I would say yes on a casual level that is probably true, or a local C Tier probably true as well…on the pro tour level, I think that’s probably not okay on a broad level. For any single event maybe…like the GK Pro stuff in New Zealand, but everyone went to that lord of the rings forest event knowing exactly what they were walking into, and it wasn’t a pro tour event…and it never could have been either because of where it was located and no one could cut down even a single leaf in course designing and nothing could be permanent. It’s a hard ask for every event to be like that though, and in most cases they aren’t asking for giant changes, it’s like trimming some overgrown limbs and undergrowth that’ll be back in under a season.

I 1000% agree with everything you said! Up here in Minnesota, even some regular parks are letting the grass grow almost as tall as you as being “the rough“, having players look for their discs when they had a good throw just a bad little 10 foot bounce…. For hours, beginners losing their discs ,it’s turning them away from the sport, frustrating all players waiting for several back ups.. the maintenance that is not being done in the area parks is embarrassing!

I agree with a lot of your thoughts about course maintenance. A lot of courses are maintained by volunteers or local players which makes things difficult. At the highest level of play I think the DGPT could have a crew that comes through and gets the course in a respectable condition. Dealing with the restrictions of the land owners is certainly a challenge. I've seen discussion about the PGA buying their courses they play so they have final say in the conditions, something the DGPT could consider is buying the land. It's an investment in the game and some kind of return they could have if things go under. Like a fast food chain always having the land the buildings are on to fall back on. Private course owners being more involved in the tour is something to consider as well. A course like Olympus which is privately owned by a player on the tour, working with the pro tour weeks or months in advance on changes and standards.

Vendors have tons of equipment that can't really be transported by shuttle, and provide food and services for fans and players alike. Disc golf is best in parks and forested areas that just don't have much parking. We really don't want to see it move to all ball golf courses. Less parking lots in the world is better. I think having shuttles drop players at hole 1 is a must. You shouldn't have to walk a mile to get prepped.
@RustySeatbelt7 ай бұрын
To that note, if a player makes the shuttle that should be good enough to replace the 5-minute check-in. If players are stressed about being stroked for an arbitrary 5-minutes then that makes them tense, reduces fan interactions, and has a chilling effect on the good vibes of the event overall.

My impression from the cheap seats is the DGPT is either micromanaging or taking a laissez faire attitude and overly relying on grassroots volunteers to make things a success… and then micromanaging the things that are easy to “control”. More of a long game needs to be played in developing courses for sure. If courses like the one at Milo need special dispensation, personnel with training, or even a ballot referendumto allow for proper course maintenance within the state park, then the DGPT or the PDGA (international professional organizations) should be spearheading that, not “leave it to the local club to deal with the logistics and if they get ignored then oh well”. But you’re just the help, the entertainment, right? 🙄🙄Dance, disc golf monkey! Dance!
@kieronmckay42767 ай бұрын
The pro tour relies way too much on volunteers in general. And I get it, the game isn’t quite there yet, but i guarantee a sponsor is willing to do the things necessary to help financially if the proper things were done to highlight the sponsors. Like there is enough eyes and people at any given tournament there just has to be a dedicated and consistent long term effort to acquiring those sponsors to get that work done. I agree, can’t rely on the local clubs and churches or whatever. Can’t even rely on the city park maintenance in most cases either, that stuff can only take you so far.

Parking is tricky and I agree it’s a massive issue. People may think it sounds crazy but it will 100% make or break some tour stops in the future. In Nashville I saw the FPO leader walk a half mile up hill to get to her car before getting the leave the course. As a spectator, I’m way more inclined to stay the entire day if I have quick access to my vehicle. I’m willing to pay 20-25 bucks for this convenience. Premium parking is a large untapped market in disc golf viewing imo.

I agree with most of this, especially the equipment standardization. Like seeing Cory Ellis lose a putt through the bottom of the cage last year was the absolute worst piece of flaming crap to witness🤦♂ The only thing I might push back on a bit is the the rough (and other parts of the course) being trimmed up to sparkly clean. That is a part that everybody is at the same disadvantage on and is equally punished for landing in. IMO the woods/bushes are part of what makes the course. Hey, I'm a Wood Elf after all🤷♂😂Land in jail and either pitch out or risk trying to punch through. Or when you miss your line by a couple inches and BAM kicked way the hell off to the jungle. I know most people aren't asking for a sterile environment of just clean ground and branchless trees, but there is a big grey area in between that and uncouth course upkeep that I don't think everybody will ever be happy with. The big thing to me is having the fairways clear and neat. Love the talk, Drew!✌🧝🌳🥏

I just want to shout out how good theyve done with Nevin in Charlotte since it's come to the pro-tour scene. I would agree that Hornets Nest is a better course for spectators, but the natural challenge of the course, plus the work that's gone in over the last two years to turn it into a consistently challenging and "spectator friendly" course (especially for multi-tiered ticket pricing) WITH a good parking lot that lets pros, vendors, and spectators park efficiently. I just hope they lower the price for vendors to come to that event, because it could easily challenge USDGC with the right setup.

Spectators parking closer than players, yeah totally get that. The comment on vendors? That falls into the category of "Tell me you've never been a vendor without telling me you've never been a vendor." That is a stupidest take ever. Depending on the size of the event and how much stuff we've got, I am usually getting to events at least 2 hours early to set up, because my cargo van is packed literally every square inch between my canopies, my tables, my signs, my product... And then I've got some backstock and extra stuff in the van that I can use to replenish as needed, because that is my entire purpose for being there. You have a backpack. Maybe a cart. The only way you're going to shuttle in a vendor is for each vendor to have access to their own private delivery van or box truck, and have a team of people that are going to have to unload from whatever vehicle I bring in to whatever vehicle they are providing for a 5-minute drive to unload it all again... Really? Try being a vendor once, and then come back and discuss this. You've been making a lot of good points on a lot of things, tee pad consistency great, The player interviews lately have been awesome, definitely credit where credit is due, but also criticism where criticism is due, and this take is absolute nonsense.

I agree with what your saying, and that stuff needs to be addressed for sure. From a growth perspective though I think there is still a lot that can be done. The biggest thing that hold the events back is the locations, and part of the problem is there aren’t pro level courses in high metropolitan areas, however there are golf courses everywhere, I know people don’t like playing golf courses sometimes, but imagine if the tour went to new your city, Miami Florida, Las Vegas (go back that’s the best city you were hitting). Second, the way disc golf sets up the event. It needs to be an event, obviously the tournament is the main event but look at other tours, there’s food trucks, merch everywhere, meet and greets, player booths, etc. look at supercross and F1, most of the people that go don’t even follow the sport that closely, they are there for the experience. Third, disc golf marketing sucks, it has to get better for the sport to make the next step, create stories, get people excited, hype up the fans, it has to be better and it has to be targeted to a larger audience
@josh_the_hodde7 ай бұрын
So what are your thoughts on discs getting checked before each round and having a standard on disc deformations? What about limiting the amount of discs in a bag? I agree that the game is a long way from where is could and should be, but the players are also a part of why the game isn’t growing. Players need to demand things change, especially when it’s all rules that need to change currently and not relevant to pay (which I hope increases). I personally think the pro tour needs a younger person running the sport or a person with a background in real sports (yes, I went there).

Disc golf here in Finland is huge as you know, and for the most part it shows in course maintenance and tournament management. I can't help but wonder why DGPT Europe is now a thing, instead of merging the US and EU tours together. Yeah, it's across the pond, but if the sport is played where it's the most popular - such as Scandinavia and Estonia, and based on PDGA locations I assume north-eastern US - the tournaments will be managed better, the live spectators will be in higher numbers, the online views go up, and it should make the rest of the tour more appealing. Therefore, if my logic is even somewhat correct, the PDGA should be getting more income from fans too. Let me know your thoughts, but I only see one downside to a much longer EU stint of the tour, and it's the travel cost. And it's nothing compared to the potential international growth.

@@clintsawyer7702 Heres the thing though, the teams do have people in charge of inspecting everything. they have paid employees doing it. so the players dont have to, they even have a travel office so the players dont have to arrange travel. Do you notice how all the disc golfers are in charge of their own travel? Disc golfers also have to supply thier own food unlike the big sports. like it or not this isnt on the same level as a real pro sport. there is not enough money in this sport to enforce the high standards other sports have. deal with it or pick up some clubs.

Had to stop the video earlier to comment on the vendor bit, since you were 100% wrong on that and it was just, to be blunt, the stupidest nonsense I've ever heard you say. But after finishing it, agree with absolutely everything else, especially the point about warm up fields being 20 minutes away with shuttles that players don't have control over, yet penalizing them for being two seconds late. If they aren't making all reasonable attempts and accommodations for the players to actually comply, they shouldn't be able to penalize the players for it. But seriously, edit the video and remove that bit on vendors, that ruins the entire rest of the thing because it's basically opening up by saying "I have no idea what I'm talking about", when everything else is spot on.

The DGPT doesn’t give a damn about complaints unless you’re one of them trans.

You're absolutely right. BSF looks like everyone showed up the day before and put a few flags in the ground.

Complaining to random youtubers solves nothing. Ultimately, these things have to be enforced on TDs by the pro tour. Take it up with jeff

Why are you always complaining, I never even see you at any of these events?

Weird. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you there either?

Disc golf doesnt have the money the PGA has. Of course they can afford to maintain courses

There are professional races where the drivers all get in cars which are spec'd out the same. The only difference is the driver.....they are the absolute,most boring races to watch. Just saying

these talks wont do anything. the players want change they need to organize. thats the only way any of these are getting addressed. you keep saying Pro like you are paid to be there, you arent, you pay to play and fight for prizes. thats why its not like other sports. no one owes players a pro tour. you get to play for a living, you arent owed a perfect tour. and stop bringing up golf, the money is a different world and you know it.

Sounds you like you need to learn how to adapt. You're job is to play disc golf. Funny how dg pros think they are on the same level as other pro sports. Give me a break
