Phobos and Deimos are two very small Martian moons, they also have some very interesting surfaces. So what would standing on these small moons be like? Watch the video to find out.
Intro and outro footage made with Space Engine.

Just did a quick calculation, escape velocity is only about 15 km/h! If you aren't carefull you will actually escape from the moon and orbit Mars independently, now that's a terrifying thought.... And probably less because im not even taking Mars gravitation into this while it certainly will be significant because of the small distance to it's surface. Let's say you jump one meter on earth, in order to do so you need an initial speed of about Sqrt(2*g*h) ~ Sqrt(20) ~ 4.5 m/s. If you jump with that speed on phobos you reach a height of 13 km before falling back. Just imagine that, simply jumping and going higher than the everest, that is just sick :p
@jayteegamble
@jayteegamble 6 жыл бұрын
Well, the escape velocity is 41km/hr (11.39m/s). But yeah, a jump would propel you up so high you could easily see the whole of Phobos and its curvature! And the jump would take 12-30 minutes!
@dxb8086
@dxb8086 6 жыл бұрын
_"escape velocity is only about 15 km/h"_ No, it's not. It's 12 m/s on Phobos and 6 m/s on Deimos. I'm not sure where you've got the 15 km/h from, but it's wrong, and therefor your calculations are as well. _"If you aren't carefull you will actually escape from the moon and orbit Mars independently"_ Wrong again. You wouldn't get anywhere close to escaping either moon. Phobos is out of the question impossible. Deimos MIGHT be possible for the strongest of athletes, if they wouldn't wear a spacesuit, which I guess, isn't a good idea on either moon. So again, no. You can't reach the escape velocity on Phobos or Deimos. _"im not even taking Mars gravitation into this while it certainly will be significant because of the small distance to it's surface"_ That wouldn't affect your jump by any means.

Erika Gehr Yeah that's true but if Doom had a more realistic gravity, it could ruin the gameplay. @maxkho00
@maxkho00 7 жыл бұрын
Well, the escape velocity of Phobos is 41km/h, so, to jump out of it, you would have to push yourself against the ground pretty damn hard. That's like jumping up on Earth and flying over the Big Ben (excluding its protruding antenna thingy [I don't know what you call it]). So, no offence to the astronauts, but I doubt they could manage that. As for Deimos, that would be the equivalent of jumping as high as Buckingham Palace. Again, a pretty tough job for the astronauts.
@hqcart1
@hqcart1 7 жыл бұрын
@Max: you forgot that it has no atmosphere, so your calculations are wrong.
@maxkho00
@maxkho00 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, this is not the only place where I am wrong. This is a simplification. I am also wrong because the gravitational pull after the astronauts had jumped would be ever-decreasing. Unfortunately, I can't account for either of the errors, so I just left the calculation as it was. That's exactly why I didn't use specific numbers and used famous buildings for insight. Either way, you don't have to be that pedantic - neither air resistance nor the decreasing gravitational pull changes the fact astronauts wouldn't get close to escaping either moon. You have got a fair point, though.

On Phobos, if you jumped straight up, you would eventually return to it, perhaps after some many hours of floating above it. On Deimos you could literally jump past its escape velocity if not careful and never return to it at all.
@dxb8086
@dxb8086 6 жыл бұрын
_" On Deimos you could literally jump past its escape velocity if not careful and never return to it at all."_ No. The escape velocity on Phobos is 12 m/s and 6 m/s on Deimos. You wouldn't get anywhere close to escaping either moon. Phobos is out of the question impossible. High jumpers can leave the ground at 4.2 meters per second with a run up - on Earth. High Jump Run-Up - nearly enough. And you might think you could leave the ground more quickly in low gravity. But you wouldn't get much of a run up in the low Deimos gravity. Especially in a spacesuit. You'd leave the ground first. And a standing jump would much more harder. You can't reach the escape velocity on Phobos or Deimos and therefor you would fall back eventually. Even though it would be a very high and long jump. Assuming that the surface would be firm enough to allow such a jump, the height attainable would be 1721 times higher than on Earth, (so let's say a couple km, max.) much smaller than the satellite's diameter of course, so obviously well short of the escape velocity. However, let's hope the astronaut brought some lunch with him, because it will take several days to come back on the ground. A scary thing to imagine, if you ask me.

Didn't mention one of the most interesting facts about Phobos, it's the only moon in the solar system that orbits its planet with a period shorter than the planet's day. Phobos would rise in the west and set in the east. This also means that Phobos's orbit shrinks by 2 meters ever century. It's predicted to break up into a ring due to tidal forces in about 40 to 50 million years with some rubble falling onto the planet

@natesturm448

Technically, yes but no at the same time. It's the same question to "Bear" in the movie "Armageddon". - "If I were to kick you in the balls, and you don't know how to work them . . . what happens to you?" [Speaking of downward thruster use on spacesuits to help keep the astronauts on the ground] - "I'd float away"? The movie is speaking of an asteroid but that's a fairly close representation of Mars' moons. Yeah it's just a movie, but that one scene is fairly scientifically correct. Now as for problems going against you? Without an effective counter force such as higher weights your legs just couldn't generate full power to launch yourself, and on top of that jumping in a spacesuit suited to such extreme space travel probably wouldn't be easy at all. No spacesuit at all? Probably could do it but you'll be grasped by Mars' gravity the moment you leave one of the moons' gravity. So technically you couldn't "float away" as you'll more or less be falling either back onto the moon or straight to Mars.

The tidal forces are basically zero but Phobos is drifting towards Mars so it may hit it or turn into a ring in 30 million years. If Phobos does hit Mars, then it would have an impact greater than the force that killed the dinosaurs. Deimos is slowly drifting away from Mars, so one day Mars won't have any moons.
