Yeah. The real "heroes" are the "Combat M.O.S.". You know? The "Tip of The Spear" types? If you get "blown up", bringing them water, ammo, smokes or Doritos? You're just a "R.E.M.F." to them. They have no "educated" grasp on how fragile their existence is balanced. They're trained/educated, to be ignorant.

This years marks 50 years since I stepped foot in South Vietnam. At 70, I still cry for those in my platoon of Marines who were absent at morning muster as we stood, weary from the all night vigil to find a dark location in the jungle to get low enough to bring them home to us, and on to their loved ones who knew nothing of the fury of gunfire that took the lives of men we had breakfast with early in the day. The joys of a USO show the night before and the photos that captured their last moments of happiness that became lost in so many moves in a lifetime. Faces of 19 & 20 year olds who are forever young men that are etched in my mind who should resemble the image I see in my mirror. They never age in the minds of loved ones, girlfriends, fiancees and buddies and those of their unit who pledged their lives to now feel the void in their hearts. We remember them as we see our flag pass by through moist eyes and it causes little children to ask their Mom or Dad why a grown man cries. It is simple. Love of country despite of her flaws and love of comrades who shared the same and cared for the generations of Americans to come who they desired to keep safe from all of the worlds aggressive evils!

I listened to this song numerous times and everytime it brings tears. It also brings memories of friends and fellow soldiers that did not make it through battles. I was in 1976 a youngster in the Rhodesian Bush war, then I went through the South West Africa(Namibia) conflict. I was lucky I survived, many of my friends did not. Today I am 60 something and I can just think of all those wasted years, wasted lives. For what?

I too am a Vietnam Vet. We were not treated very well but this certainly helps the healing. After Vietnam I became a history teacher. I told all my students that every generation of Americans has had a war. It is your turn to stop that. There are only two rules of war. 1) Young men die. 2) You cannot change rule # 1. God bless all of us that have served. Viewed in San Diego, California USA
