Proving its humanitarian assistance, India sent 2nd batch of relief material to landslide-hit Papua New Guinea on June 13. A flight carrying approximately 19 tons of HADR supplies departed for PNG on Thursday. The aid comprised 13 tons of disaster relief materials including temporary shelter, water tanks, hygiene kits, and readymade meals. 6 tons of emergency use medicine, medical equipment including dengue, malaria diagnostic kits, and baby food were also sent. Earlier on May 29, India had sent immediate relief assistance worth $1mn shortly after the landslide wreaked havoc in PNG. PM Modi on May 28 expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to affected families. Taking to ‘X’, he reaffirmed India’s stand with Papua New Guinea in times of difficulties and devastation. India has firmly stood by PNG in times of devastation caused by natural disasters, including the 2018 earthquake, and volcanic eruptions in 2019, and 2023. While the area continues to pose ‘extreme risk’, more than 2000 people were feared to have been buried by a massive landslide in May.
