0:53 "This was in 1990" hits REALLY hard as a punchline for those long familiar with Betamax. I remember reading MAD Magazine in the late '80s and there being jokes about Beta in there. Which is probably how I learned it existed, come to think of it.

I cannot tell if that line was sarcasm or not. As someone who has basically lived in hotels for long periods of time (as I'm sure Paul F. Tompkins has too), a lot of them have really uncomfortable mattresses. Surprisingly uncomfortable, given that that's like... the one thing they should always be getting right.

Since there's a lot of young people here Sony Betamax was the OTHER videotape format besides VHS. It was superior in a lot of ways like resolution but hardly had any movies & nobody made it besides Sony. It died by like 1983-84 as a format.

I also had to take what was called a "working lunch break" even after the store was robbed twice they still didnt put a second worker on.

I remember being dead in the 80's, but had a GF in the late 90's that still had a betamax in her bedroom, and we watched Forrest Gump there. Forrest Gump was released in movie theaters in 1994. Apparently the last betamax movie released was the original Mission Impossible starring Tom Cruise, which came out in 1996! For a format that had been dead in the water for 10 years, it's amazing that at least a few movie studios were still supporting it into the mid 1990's.
