UPDATE: I watched the game and people sent in some screengrabs of the ball. It looks like the official ball only had six panels! Which means there were no rectangles on the actual game ball. But England also lost the final. So I'd like to revise my theory: since 1966 there is a 100% correlation between the ball having rectangles and England winning the final. twitter.com/standupmaths/status/1414353470585548803 A few people have said that the actual game balls might have different panels. (And it is not uncommon for the cheaper versions of championship balls to have the design printed on ‘cheaper panels’ but I’ve only seen that done on pentagons and hexagons before.) I thought I had checked the official balls. I will continue my investigations. And yes: I am both Australian (by birth) and British (by naturalisation). But am yet to adopt the England Team as my own.

Yes, I can confirm: the actual _Official Match Ball Uniforia_ is made of panels that resemble the drawings on the ball, which would make the ball an inflated cube. Disappointing :/

So here is a question that inflated my mind. How about a tesseract? The 3D representation (of the 4D rotation) where an inner cube is connected to an outer cube. Can you theoretically "inflate" this 4D structure into a 3D football, or would it just become a shadow of itself? :D

Kicking a volleyball warps it pretty quickly, causing it to develop bumps. No one should be playing soccer with a volleyball. The same goes for a basketball. Neither of those balls are made to withstand a lot of kicking (obviously, one or two kicks here and there don't cause much damage).
@json_bourne3812

@SgtSupaman

@@json_bourne3812 , yes, people's legs are easily stronger than their arms. The average punch of an untrained male can get up to a force around 700 N. Meanwhile, the average kick of an untrained male can get up to almost 3000 N. I wouldn't think it impossible for someone to cause issues by hitting the ball hard enough over and over, but to hit with that much force would be a wild hit and not at all something someone would do while trying to actually play the sport.

On a related note, the Archimedean Solid that is "closest to a sphere" in terms of its sphericity as measured by the isoperimetric quotient (IQ) is the Disdyakis Triacontahedron. (For reference IQ = 36πV ^2/S^3 where V is the volume and S the surface area. The IQ of a sphere is 1, and the IQ of any other convex solid is less than 1, so the higher the IQ of a solid is to 1 the closer it is to a sphere.) So presumably this is the solid that would need the least deformation to work as a football (or, since I'm in the US, a soccer ball. 🤷‍♂️) An article on the sphericity of the Archimedean Solids is linked below for the curious. users.wpi.edu/~paravind/Publications/cmj098-107-aravind.pdf

Question while I'm watching, paused to type: Is the area of the triangles and the squares equal? Edit: If not, what is the relationship between the area of the triangles and squares in the model shown?
@browncoatbrooklyn6511
@browncoatbrooklyn6511 3 жыл бұрын
Assuming the triangle is equilateral, and its sides are equal to those of the squares, as in the Archimedean solid, the square's area is bigger than the triangle's, with a ratio of 16:3. As for the rhombicuboctahedron, it varies. Suppose that the squares' sides have length S and the triangles' sides have length T. A square's' area is greater when (S^4)(T^2) is greater than 3/16, while a triangle's area is greater in the opposite case.

2:55 The gyroelongated square bicupola is, in fact, *not* another Archimedean solid, despite all of its vertices being the same shape. Under its square-prismatic symmetry, this solid’s vertices come in two types: eight from the polar squares, and the other 16 from the equatorial belt of squares.

I don't know about the reason (probably just for fun), but I guess that once the ball is inflated to be a sphere, the actual shapes and layout of the panels have a negligible effect on the ball's behaviour, so there is barely any reason to keep it the same.

Doesn't matter what the inside shape is as long as the inside pressure the ball is adequate. The pressure keeps the ball round. Humans cant kick the ball hard enough to break the shape unless of course the ball is flat or broken, and in that case the ref or players will ask for it to be replaced.

Its really quite interesting how aerodynamics play into the makeup of the ball, similarly to a golf ball it cant be too smooth, or the flight path will become unpredictable. The shape of the panels and the amount of stitches do actually play a role in this.
