Fascinating! I read The Origin of Consciousness in 1979, prior to a backpacking and camping trip to Greece, where I camped near Delphi and on the island of Delos. The book and the journey changed my life. There is also something about camping among these ancient sacred places which has a powerful effect on the imagination. Yes, I "heard" voices, but they were not audible to me in the Biblical, commanding, right brain Julian Jaynes sense. Because I am secular and I've ignored most literature on the subject of God for decades, I was unaware of Tanya Luhrmann's work until seeing this video. I have ordered 2 of her books. 'How God Becomes Real' may provide some insight into right wing evangelical politics. Most interesting will be 'Persuasions of the Witches' Craft', her experience with British witches and Wiccan culture in the late 1980s. Tanya Luhrmann's mentions of other books, like Bruno Snell's 'The Discovery of the Mind', and Dodds' 'The Greeks and the Irrational' have sent me scurrying on a used book buying binge. Audio halluncinations seem tied with vivid dreams and even self talk and active imagination. Also consider hearing songs played or repeated audio commercials and how these create inner recordings that are hard to silence.
