We had a student at high school kind of do this. The kid was zoned for a bad school on the other side of town. Somehow, he made it up to our school (no idea how the paperwork happened), attended classes, joined the basketball team, and then would invite himself over to friend’s houses so he had a place to spend the night. Great student, nice guy. We didn’t find out his situation until his little sister tried to mimic him years later, only to break down crying in class one day because she was so hungry and hadn’t eaten in a while. Thankfully, I think they got help with their home life situation after that.

The fact no one, even the school, really seemed super upset that he was a trespasser but more shocked he wasn't a student tells me that he was pretty liked in the community. Like I would expect the school to press charges, but he must've been a decent enough guy for them not to go through with it

I went to a small (200 students) day and boarding high school in Massachusetts and we had an imposter student who fooled faculty into waiving her tuition, paying her apartment rent and buying her a Vespa-like scooter. She kind of stayed to herself but did have a few friends. Needless to say, the faculty who financially and otherwise supported her were less than thrilled to find out she was 27 and definitely not a high school student after she suddenly went MIA one day. Unclear if she kept the scooter…

Maybe some staff and students knew his situation but decided not to rat him out. One of my college dorm mates couldn't afford to live on campus. I had an RA ask me if I could allow him to stay in my room. I said OK as I liked the guy as wanted to help. Most of the RA staff knew he was staying with me. But....some residents weren't cool with it and reported him to the RC. He was gone the next day. So, from my personal experience, it's possible he had inside help.

As a former college administrator, I can tell you that most colleges take security very seriously, but most college students do not. Students - not all, but many - will let people they don't know into their buildings or rooms, try to override alarm systems, and leave doors unlocked. It's a constant struggle to educate and persuade students to be more cautious. They're at an age where they want to do whatever they want with impunity, until something goes wrong and then they want the college to take responsibility for it.

This was a dorm with central, shared bathrooms too. Nothing more than a little shouting ever occurred but it easily could’ve been worse. Pretty nuts when you consider how much money we were all paying to be there.

@@Network126 So in your opinion the appropriate thing for us to do would be to give them money and have them continue to come back, directly into the homes of a bunch of 18 year olds, whenever they please or need some money? Also the vast majority of us were there through a mix of student loans and scholarships, loans that some of us are still struggling to pay in our 30s. You are right that society is greedy, we live in a brutal capitalist society that feeds on the young, the naive, the old, the disabled, and the powerless. My hope is we start working towards real solutions to our many problems, including homelessness, and not resign ourselves to chaos and hopelessness.

My teen attended the Stanford program for HS students this summer and said the campus is wide open with very little security. There was an assault during the summer, but it did not involve the High School students. Apparently there are homeless living in trailers outside the campus on El Camino Real and some of them wander onto campus. It made me a bit nervous as a parent to know just how open the campus is there.

Sneaking into dorms is one thing, but I always wondered how many people do this at other prestigious universities, at least on a smaller scale, by attending classes or hanging out with students at events and stuff. I wonder how this guy got the university ID and key cards he would've undoubtable needed to get into the dorms. I mean, you do need those at Stanford, right? I've always wondered if anyone ever tries this because I live right near Princeton and it'd be really easy as long as the person is the right age and fits in with the students.

@@NoelleH18 Yeah, the lack of security on campuses, especially even big prestigious ones, always surprises me, in this post 9/11 school shooting world. A student got killed in a dorm at The College Of New Jersey, back in 2004 or '05, I think. He was thrown down a garbage shoot and they had to dig through the landfill to find him. The guy who they think did it never went to prison because they didn't have enough evidence, but he was a crazy guy who had gotten in trouble for trespassing in dorms before. They also just found a girl dead on the Princeton campus a few weeks ago and it's still being investigated.

I am surprised that the number of comments that think it's perfectly okay that this man assimilated and pretended to be a student this entire time. Dorms are full of strangers so security is always a priority. Had this man/child harmed or even killed someone everyone would be in an uproar but because he was just found squatting it's okay. *It is absolutely not okay.* Other comments are talking about how he should be given a scholarship as he was "determined" because he probably went to class. It's called auditing and you can take certain classes. But pretending to be a resident of a dormitory on campus of a university as large as Stanford. Absolutely not okay. I hope the ban continues and he is not allowed to return to the campus.

He's disappointed in himself, especially since this hurt the feelings of the cute girl that was finally falling in love with him just the night before at a college bonfire. A few scenes later, his classmates go to the dean's office to stick up for him. They tell stories of what a great guy he was, even the janitors and the quiet kid have only good things to say about him. As these stories about him spread everywhere, regular people across America decide to crowd-fund him with a full college scholarship to Stanford so he can finish out the next 3 years with his best friends. And best of all, the cute girl forgives him for finally being his honest self. ....Yeah, not in real life. Sorry dude lol.

A few years ago I lived in San Francisco, and would take Caltrain to San Jose for church every Sunday and some Wednesday. I had a friend who was an out of state student at Stanford University, and often I would stay at her dorm to wait for our ride would pick us up church. I remember on a few occasions she reminded me that I could just spend the night at her dorm, though it was thoughtful of her, and somewhat odd that I, a non student would even think of sleeping inside of University dorm I don’t attend. Then she goes on “many students allow their non student friends onto campus and spend the night in their dorms.” I remember looking around and seeing so many students, oblivious to who may or may not be a student just moping around the dorms, and thinking to myself ‘I just wouldn’t feel safe sleeping at a friends dorm, among people I don’t even know walking up and down the hallways. Like they said in the video, Stanford dorm security is very…open/trusting. I knew something like this was just bound to happen due to the lack of dorm security monitoring in housing. Even back then I thought someone could just walk into campus and find themselves living off of their resources- never knew I’d see that in real time! This was my concern. Though he didn’t harm anyone, the mental state of lying to people of his status, and sleeping around in dorms, basements to live up to that lie speaks volumes. Imagine if he never got caught, he may continue to do this as he gets older. It’s a security breach, and needs to be dealt with seriously to avoid such behaviors in the future.

Yeah, it's creepy, but it does indeed happen. Prospective students, best friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, lots of people stay over who aren't students there. If you lock things down too hard and ban that, then kids won't go to school there or live on campus (and residency is where schools make their money).
@robjohnston366
@robjohnston366 2 жыл бұрын
The same occurs at UCLA. When students, particularly from places on the eastcoast and generally from outside of (or even from) California are accepted and enroll at the University, their friends will excitedly say something like, "Congrats Cali [girl or guy], you know I'm going to come visit you!" Then the student who'll be attending UCLA will say something like, "You better!" So UCLA always has a string of visitors from other colleges throughout the year, which means resting on sleeping bags on the floor, swiping them into the dining halls on campus, etc. UCLA's location and temperate California weather are always an attraction for eastcoasters, etc. I see your point though. The RA and the dorm monitor should be notified that a visitor will be staying with a dorm resident because a UCLA Bruin Card can be required as proof of residency when asked, especially when using it to enter the dorms, in a one-to-one verification of card and student. But the thing is, getting a diploma from a particular university will not be possible by some sort of scheme. That's why I don't think they'll prosecute this person, because most likely he was helped along the way to stay in the dorms, and I don't really see the harm. If he were a violent person, that'd be another story, but students there can vouch for him that he isn't.
