GREAT discussion! Thank you for posting it. I've always admired and respected Martin and Marc, and feel that they deserve much more recognition and credit for what Tesla has become and where it is going.

What you say there has actually been the biggest distaste of owning a Tesla. The whole company has been coup d'état by very talented people. They have even changed the history and insert themselves as founders. And the worst thing is that they have got away with it.

Its obvious there are hard feelings, but I hope they can get over them and become friends again. Its obvious that they contributed a tremendous amount to helping start sustainable transportation.

I agree. All three of these guys are awesome. I think Elon just has a much more aggressive, genuinely world-changing vision, while these folks both seem more engineer types. Having come up with the idea from an engineering POV, both Martin and Marc were great at engineering, but rather fumbled at selling it with a world-changing marketing spin on it. They also don't want to take a back-seat to their own company when they view Elon only as an investor. It's hard to realize that someone else might have the same, if not more, passion for a shared vision, and think "oh well I might just want to be an engineer" in the back-seat of your dream. Gonna be hard to move past that and still work together. Still wish it would happen somehow.

Android also wasn't from the start developed by google. But android from 2018 is far more different and better that one from 2005. With Tesla cars it's similiar.

Yea, my thought as well, must be at least from 2015 or sooner based on what was said about grid energy storage. My guess.

@@GieZatRedLight At 54:19 Martin Eberhard talks about the Chevrolet Bolt which "will come out this year". Well, Chevrolet started the production in October 2016. *This video must have been shot somewhere in the early or mid 2016.*

Well, that's because he knows more about climate change. It's like a huge train that is hard to stop, even if you put the brakes at full power. Today some people still argue that human made climate change is real. In 30 years people will argue that whatever we do, the climate will still be changing. Yes, it will slow down, but eventually. As I said with the example with the train. Some people will want immediate results, but those won't happen. Only if we start *now* and continue to do hard work until 2050, only the generation which will (still) live in 2100 will see some notable effects. Not sooner. Humanity pushed that CO2 for some 50 years, maybe even a bit longer. Now it will take another 50 to slow it down and maybe even another 20 or 50 to come to full stop. It will take generations. Our actions will have some results in the climate of our grandchildren and not in climate we will ever see. And this is what he was talking about.

The efficiency of Tesla's cars can be improved fairly significantly. Aero is far from optimal, particularly around the tires. AC induction is actually pretty poor in low power steady cruise which is why Model S gained some efficiency in the dual motor config. I believe in adding a low power ironless PM motor that's optimized for efficiency in long distance freeway cruise. In parallel it can spin without drag as can the AC induction so it's a good pair. You might gain 10-20% on range and that's huge. You can drop battery weight thus structure weight etc etc Optimization is king. Model S is actually a pig in many ways.

@@pauligross , Dan Fredriksen may be totally correct. But as he said, the results are in in the magnitude of 10-20%. Not factors (2x), much less in orders of magnitude (10x). Small improvements. Optimising for one goal (efficiency in long distance freeway cruise) might not be the best for peak power. Many "optimisations" have side effects. Of course Tesla Model S 2012 wasn't perfect, they may come some improvements. Actually the Model 3 is a lot more efficient than the Model S, it is the most efficient EV, on tie with the Hyundai Ioniq, but that one is significantly lighter because it has a battery half the size. But in the end effect, most future efficiency improvements will be small, in the order of 10% or just maybe a few more. Actually - it will go the other way because EV drivetrains will be put in far less efficient cars, for example crossovers (Kona, Niro, i-Pace) or even SUVs (e-Tron, EQC).

Martin, do you regret selling your silence to Elon?
@richardpetek712

A) This could be a part of their deal and B) a smear campaign would just do harm to Tesla. It already had enough problems. Even if Martin Eberhardt was one of the founders, acts of revenge don't help anybody.
