One addition to the Tesla model 3 story, Tesla after getting the robots to work couldn’t build more than 1250 cars per production line a week. Musk wanted 5000 cars a week so having filled the factory with no more space available inside the factory he built a steel framed tent that used pipe as the structural member covered by a weather resistant cloth roughly 100 feet x 1000 feet in size to build more model 3 cars. The production line in the tent is 100% human powered. Not a single robot and production went to 3000 cars a week from the tent production line. It’s still producing cars today.

Musk didnt mention that Martin Eberhard actually started Tesla first and included Marc Tarpenning as partner - not a massive issue but would be nice to have mentioned that. Musk was a key and very early investor though and as I understand the early Chairman also. Martin Eberhard seemed to have a personality clash with Musk and his ambitions and better business mindset. Martin continually didnt respect Musk for what he was doing and calls him 'just an investor' which wasn't really correct. Musk was always much more than that and the fact that things went so much better with Musk in charge shows how the decision to stand down Martin from CEO was the right decision - bad for Martin but he would need to accept the truth of this. With Martin still in charge - Tesla would have died a long time ago...around 2008 ish or not much later... Someone should do a documentary on this very topic - intriguing and interesting I think..

Good Ideas, yes, I agree. Whenever Elon tells the story, he tries to rewrite history to be that it was his idea to start Tesla when in fact he wanted nothing to do with it at all in the beginning. Nobody did. Not even AC Propulsion. But I would love a documentary, after detained interviews will all the people involved, to get an accurate timeline. And it should start back in 1990 at GM showing how an inverter designed by Alan Cocconi was used, which later became EV1, and was later used when he confounded AC Propulsion. I think there is too much animosity between the founders of Tesla and Elon Musk to get an agreement on some key points that are not public record. But Martin was CEO until August 2007. It’s ok giving Musk credit for taking someone else’s crazy idea and making it work, but eventually Musk will be telling the story as if he was soldering 18650’s together alongside Alan Cocconi for the Tzero, and they had an idea to make Tesla. When you hear him tell the story, he acts like it was his idea to name the company, but it was already named before Elon was involved. The only think Elon did was try to pronounce it Tezz-la instead of the correct Tess-la after the guy it was named after. But unfortunately, most documentaries try to add drama that wasn’t there, or change the story to fit the narrative. Just like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, the real innovation was from someone else. Elon, Gates, Jobs just had the ruthlessness needed to turn it into a reality, so their role is also vital, but no more vital than they one who actually started it.

Idk, I don't think Elon wants to tell that story, for many reasons. Partly because he respects Martin even though it was not reciprocated, at least back then. Ultimately Elon was right, and its respectful he doesn't rehash.

@@imho7250 - This just storytelling, not a full-pledged proper documentary, and even then things get left out by supposedly neutral authors. But including Eberhard in this KZbin post does not warrant talking about "painful" episodes between them.If that were to be included then they both would have to tell their sides in person. In the end, Tesla cars is the work of a track relay team - someone starts the run and someone, normally the best athlete, finishes. If Elon started this project and Eberhard finished it, what would Tesla cars, and EVs overall, look like today, better or worse?

@@RobertJackson-sl1mk Well I wouldn't say nothing that's just not right. They started off the right idea in the right way but just couldn't finish it without Musk. Would Musk have done the same thing if they never started Tesla ? - we just don't know...maybe he would have anyway, maybe not...maybe there would not be a Tesla without those first 2...I would say from what I seen that probably yes, Musk would have done a Tesla thing anyways but its not a done deal..

'Necessity is the mother of invention', this is how Tesla solved its technical hurdles, I think its the DNA of this company. Do things that have never been done before and think differently. Well I wished Tesla would come out with a 'model T', as Ford did at the beginning of the previous century, practical without superfluous options and reliable. I am from a market segment which cannot afford the Tesla models S, 3 and X, but more from a Toyota Corolla market segment which need dependable products. Where I am from Mauritius, I do not need Auto Pilot, it will kill the joy of driving and my country is not that big as the US. A 100KWh battery with a single 150Kw AC motor on one axle only will suffice, but with Air Conditioning [tropical climate 15 to 35 degrees Celsius], it never snows. Tesla also innovated in the way it financed itself. Good to hear that 2 other car companies Daimler & Toyota helped.

Elon Musk was brought in as a finacer of the roadster, he did NOT deisgn it , he just brought money to the table, then stuffed the guys who thought of the electrified lotus, and had built a working prototype and took over as he himself had thought of it and built the first one. And here is the rub.........The production idea was conceived by Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning who incorporated Tesla Motors in Delaware on July 1, 2003, to pursue the idea commercially.South African-born entrepreneur Elon Musk took an active role within the company starting in 2004, including investing US$7.5 million, overseeing Roadster product design from the beginning, and greatly expanding Tesla's long-term strategic sales goals by using the sports car to fund development of mainstream vehicles. Musk became Tesla's Chairman of the Board in April 2004 and had helped recruit JB Straubel as chief technology officer in March 2004.

Yea, you can tell by the design of the early roadster, it wasn't as thought out as later models! The batteries were located in a mad spot, way too high up! Doesn't show the ground up, first principals thinking of the newer ones..

So with all the talk about the battery design etc, why do analyst's keep stating "they're nothing special...their panasonic batteries..anyone can do it."????
@LeutnantComanderData
@LeutnantComanderData 6 жыл бұрын
because when they went from the standard sized cell ( 18650) - which are still being used by pretty much everyone and everything else - to a much more energy efficient design ( 2170 ) that holds up to 6 times the power with just a marginal increase in size, they teamed up with panasonic to produce them inhouse. In the gigafactory they can controll the quality, the recycling, the materials and ramp up the speed and production cost that it would take to ship them everywhere - since it is still a massive investment and you need tons of know-how they developed and worked closely with panasonic on this.

What the FU*K Google !?! I have video adds every 2 to 5 minutes (not to mention the bottom midle add on the video or the adds on top of the "up next" list). I understand 1 add for every 20 mins, but i had one just less than 1 minute from another ! Also in other vids i sometimes have forced youtube adds 3 at a row, and the actual video is shorter than the adds! Stopp ffing with people and make a service that they want to see. A good solution is to have every video max quality of 720p@30fps, if anyone wants better they need to get the monthly subscription (for example the paid base subscription of $1,99(up to 2k@30fps) and premium that opens up 4k videos and other options would be 9,99. If you make a paid premiums then definetly add a way for the subscribers to mark the shows they like and would want to support (aka if a part of the moeny paid is paid for the content creators, only those who are chosen by a person get from that pool of money each month that the people has a subscription of). Easy solution and people are ok with it. This will make you more money, more money and abilities for the content creators and the viewers happy.

Even though Tesla never used any of the T-Zero designs T-Zero did get the Tesla company started. It took Tesla a while get the roadster sorted out and working. The early days of Tesla roadster production read like the three stooges build a car. But they figured out what worked and what didn't and made the corrections. The Japanese when they set up a new production line actually set up the assembly line using 100 % people instead of robots to get the line up and running and after the production line is running smoothly do they start to replace humans with robots but make sure the robots don't slow down the assembly line. Volkswagen recently built a new production line for the Jetta and had to shut it down as they had too many problems with the robots the same as Tesla on the Model 3 line. There is a place for robots but you need to realize you don't build a production assembly line with 100 percent robots is asking for trouble as you only have so many computer programmer's to program the robots and each robot could take anywhere from one month to four or more months to get one robot to work properly. Now doing it the Japanese assembly line way where you replaced humans with robots over time meanwhile meeting your production line goals is definitely the way to go. After all if you go back in time we in the US built and supplied the UK, France, Australia and The USSR with a lot of supplies and equipment to wage war with. And we did that without any robots.

designing parts to be assembled by robots vs robots replacing people This will be the next evolutionary step in assembly manufacturing, my opinion. The machine that builds the machine. Alien Dreadnought as Musk imagines it. hint: NOT Model 3 production line. Model Y based on Model 3, so probably not Y either. Who/when might this happen with vehicles? we shall see

The T-Zero not only inspired the Roadster Tesla bought the motor, controller and battery system from ACPropulsion who made the T-Zero. The stopped paying ACP after 6 months but still used and made the same system. The battery system is still being used in all Tesla vehicles today in Dec 2019. The T-Zero had V2G Vehicle To GRID but Tesla removed that. At least they did give them credit for the general design.

So Tesla's first Roadster could do 0-60 mph in 4 secs. Not bad. But now their new hi performance Roadster is the first car in the world to break the 2 sec. barrier. 0 - 60 in 1.9 sec. I saw a comment on another video that its not true. Top fuel dragsters can break the 2 sec. barrier too. So apparently only top fuel dragsters and Tesla's new Roadster are the fastest cars in the world.

The reason they have not start now is because they are waiting on 5G, which is launching in 2020.... @tribalypredisposed
@tribalypredisposed 7 жыл бұрын
Ed Benti, it was almost entirely Elon Musk's money at that point, and without Musk being willing to put in another $40 million well after that point, Tesla would never have survived. The original founders were well outside their abilities and Tesla was on its way to large losses on every Roadster sold, it would have been yet another cautionary tale about electric cars and would have done the opposite from the mission statement. At that point some people had to be let go to keep the company above water. To claim he is a takeover artist is absurd, the last thing he wanted was to add CEO duties at Tesla when he already had a full time entrepreneur job at Space-X. He did the other founders a favor, without him they would have had only a bankruptcy for their efforts.

Hey Ed. Musk put HIS entire fortune into TESLA to make it work. It wasn't going anywhere with Martin Eberhart. Martin did a great job, but was NOT the person to LEAD the company through to a full production company. Also the software for the original Roadster did not work and was totally unreliable. The battery pack was not workable either. All of it was unsustainable and needed to be completely redesigned for production. That's why the Roadster is not on the Road anymore. It was a prototype in production. That's not how you build a car company. Anyone can build a prototype or anything. Building a production line is totally different. There will be continued firings. If you don't love the concept and for whatever reason have a complaint and cannot see past a complaint, its time to move on. So Ed - Musk was making TESLA successful and doing the right thing for the sake of the company and the idea that Martin Eberhart and Marc Taening created. Microsoft had its Paul Allen, Apple had its Wozniak. Move on ...

On the business side, Musk was the Jobs of the program. Musk had bigger plans, and Eberhard had small ideas and couldn't keep up. Eberhard and Tapperning can still have ownership (stock) of Tesla but Musk funded the huge majority of the company. On the subject of the technical aspect, it is EASY to make an electric car. It is expensive to make production level electric cars. It is EASY to make an electric car company. I can easily make one now and I have made and converted EV's. But succeeding on the level of Tesla and the impact that they have could have only be done by Elon Musk.

What a terrible speaker! It is hard to listen to him speaking! I would not be able to work with him all the time and listen to him all the time!!!! His speaking so bad... he doesn’t need to use the bad language!!! It is bad enough without its!!! It’s very annoying to listen to Elon’s speaking! I couldn’t watch him past 20min. That was maximum I could take his bad speaking!

Scott Gibson yep. We are hearing that since the beginning. Now every major automaker is moving to electric cars. Looks like Tesla is changing the industry.

Two years ago bought a model S. Last year got a model X also. Our friends just got their model 3. Most amazing cars I have ever driven, and it turns out, the SAFEST cars ever made. I have been waiting my whole life for these cars. If Elon builds it, I am buying!
