Great webinar. RN here. When a patient in the hospital asks me, "when I am outside the hospital setting, and someone is demanding my vaccination status, say like in a business setting, am I protected by HIPAA in this situation?" What would be a good answer to give a patient in this scenario?

Your vaccination status is part of your personal health information. HIPAA is a law that protects your health information from being shared by certain entities without your permission, but it does not apply to your own disclosures or to the requests of other parties. You can choose whether you want to share your vaccination status or not, but you should know that there may be some consequences if you don’t. For example, you may not be allowed to enter a business or use a service, or you may have to follow different rules, such as wearing a mask or getting tested. You should also be aware that there may be other laws or regulations in your state or locality that affect your rights and obligations regarding your vaccination status.
