The interesting thing with the stanley cups: every time i see a nurse with one, i play coy and say "hey thats a nice cup, ive been seeing those, what do you like about it?" And they drop their head and shame and say something to th effect of how they are a stupid trend. But yet they still participate. Its fascinating how people will go to such a great length for inclusion and belonging that they will even do things that they know are stupid and feel embarassed by.

As someone who doesn't live in the USA, I literally just discovered what a Stanley cup is aaaand... yeah nah, you're not out of touch with reality, you're 100% right about what motivates this kind of trend. This is stupid. But it works, so brands will keep doing it. As long as we buy things for how it makes us look/appear to others (who shouldn't care but do because they are in this same weird matrix we created, where owning an iPhone somehow makes you appear better than owning an Android - at least in the US because again, never heard about the green/blue bubbles debate and value judgment linked to it outside of the US), brands will keep exploiting this mechanism.

Agreed - brands will keep exploiting this FOMO-driven mechanism... until consumers wise up. So, probably all of the foreseeable future 😮‍💨

The cups are ugly. When it comes to manufactured goods, we get charged what we get charged because companies know we can pay it. They know we will pay it. Granted, some manufactured goods are priced to our market even if they are sold in poorer countries.

As someone who constantly loses bottles, I will risk the microplastics and just reuse disposable bottles. I inherited a Frank Green bottle once (it was left at my house after a gathering and no one claimed it) and sure, the extra insulation was nice but it was such a fuckaround to clean. I lost it a few months later.

The only 'premium' item I've ever bought was a high-end alienware laptop. I was long haul trucking at the time, and I needed something for the down time that didn't take up a ton of room. Plus, I've never had a bad interaction with Dell service or their extended warranty team.

TBH I don't give a F about the trend, I use my stanley thermos on construction site for years, it's been dropped from 2nd floor, kept in the same bag as my tools and still keeps my beverages hot/cold for over 24h. Stanley always made quality product , it is just a trend it came and will go. Yet stanleys will still be popular among construction workers.

damn, you hit the nail on the head. I see my mother fall into needing the fantasy life that she thinks buying stuff will get her. It's really sad how many of us are like that too. Shopping and consumerism is starting to seem like a drug, in the way sex and food can be drugs. The search for more dopamine hits can come in many shapes. It's not just the people who are 90k in shopping debt, even those who can 'afford' it are still hooked to needing new shiny things.

Agree, they are huge and stupid. Fads we call them. All these named items that have very little else to sell them. I think this is a thing that has been around as long as there has been advertising.. Hair restorer in ancient magazine ads, x ray specs LOL , charles atlas courses, buying trainers with brand names when you cant run for toffees, having the best soccer kit in school when you dont really like football. Miel kitchen appliances when you arent interested in cooking, Kenwood chef mixers ditto.. I read a book called the millionaire next door in which the writer points out that rich people dont generally fall for fads and that is part of why they are rich...

Yoooo... I'm 100% on board with you on this. I have no idea what your channel is about but I like this content so far. Consumerism gets pretty wack sometimes. Subscribed. The weird thing is that until recently, Stanley was just a decent brand of thermos that is or used to be usa made. Until Yeti came along, nobody gave a shit.

Wait, you're talking crap about these, then you show us your $45 insulated Yeti cup 😂? What's the problem/difference in wanting to keep something hot or cold? You don't typically have access to ice at work, or in your car, or anywhere else out and about you might be. You just seemed a bit hypocritical is all. I understand your points about the dumb trends, but thermos type cups can definitely be useful. It just depends on the season/temperature, where you are, and what your drinking at the time.
@davislane9654
@davislane9654 8 ай бұрын
Did we watch the same video? The difference is he's not buying a Yeti for clout. Most people buying Stanley cups these days are only keeping up with a trend. They'd buy it even if it didn't keep their drinks hot/cold. The point is they don't care that they're useful. If they did, why wouldn't they just buy a classic Stanley thermos?
@dcxh4488
@dcxh4488 8 ай бұрын
@@davislane9654 "Most people buying Stanley cups these days are only keeping up with a trend" is an assumption. I think it's safe to say that most people in areas where coffee is popular own a thermos. Just because this one is popular beyond reason doesn't mean they're not trying to keep a liquid hot or cold with it. Yes Chris buying a Yeti for $45 is the same thing, he was tricked by marketing the same way he claims purchasers of the Stanley cup were tricked.

@@dcxh4488 It is a very robust assumption that is quite easy to see. Not all assumptions are uninformed ones. Engineering could not exist without assumptions. Your infrastructure is built on thousands of assumptions, and because they are good and honest assumptions, they work.

@@davislane9654 I'm guessing you missed the part where he questioned why anyone would need ice (or hot liquids) insulated for many hours.. Also I did say I understand his points on the dumb trends/clout manipulation that is so easily influenced on the masses by these companies. It's definitely stupidity. But the fact remains that they are very useful containers when used what they're designed for..
