I've often thought it would be a great film-the story of the 1920s incarnation of the Jack Torrence character in the Overlook. A horror, paranormal ballroom type story. Steven King and Vivian Kubrick could have cameos as mabey m.c.s of the ball. Jack Nicholson's son could star in it. Opinions???

I think you’re missing the point of the “caretaker”. The only reason Jack Torrance is in the photo is because he’s the most recent victim of losing himself to the main evil spirit of the hotel. If you’ve watched Doctor Sleep you would see Jack as the caretaker trying to seduce Danny the same way he was by the drink by the man who was seduced before him. “Jack” at this point is merely just a shell of the main evil spirit of the hotel, the Caretaker. If Danny would have failed as his father had, the ending would pan close with Danny being replaced as the caretaker.

Cool idea. Not sure why that second commenter thinks you misunderstood the idea, since the two ideas aren't mutually exclusive, but ok.

Cool idea, but some stories are better with no sequels. The best sequel you can give the audience is the one they come up with in their head. We all have different ideas of what happened to x character after the events of the film, sometimes it’s better to leave stories as they are and not expand them.

Here Kubrick subtly explains how pathetic all those film critiques really are, spending thousands complicated words trying to extort bizarre meanings out of every single aspect of his movies just to sell their essays and/or just to feel smarter than the "simple audience" that just watches the movies and give a personal explanation, wich is actually all Kubrick wanted according to this interview

I used to do this. And listened to the conspiracies for a while. Years later it all seems silly. There's plenty to appreciate about this masterpiece of a film and Kubricks intelligence without treating it like it came from God himself.

THINGS I LEARNED FROM WATCHING THE SHINING-1. One guy is capable of cleaning a huge hotel. 2. All through the film we never see Jack Torrance do any caretaker work whatsoever (heck he doesnt even so much as cook dinner!) 3. Deliberately breaking a little boy's arm is not a criminal offence. 4. Hotel bars remain fully stocked with booze to accomodate the winter caretakers. 5. Boys don't look at all like their birth mothers. 6. Doctors made housecalls in 1980. 7. A plane reservation is not needed to fly from Florida to Denver.

1. He wasn't there to clean, but to take care of the place by operating the boiler, etc. The place was clean when it closed. 2. Yes but we see Wendy doing it. 3. It is but I reckon it will surprise you to learn that not all crimes get reported and prosecuted 😲 4. It's explicitly stated that there's no booze left in the bar. 5. Many don't. You learned that via this movie? 6. Yes. You can still get a house call from a doctor in 2023. 7. You've always been able to buy a ticket on the day of travel if you're willing to pay top dollar. How did you think people fly to handle emergencies?

Kubrick was a hack film maker, he ruined this film completely!

He didn't know he was being recorded. Had he known, he would've hung up the phone.
