Lol, yes it's very easy to scoff at bygone eras, but what you need to remember is modern day players like messi, zidane, ronaldinho etc were only able to achieve their level of greatness because they learned from the man who learned from the man who learned from the man, etc. Each new generation accentuates the positives and eliminates the negatives of the previous one. To quote Isaac Newton: "If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoudlers of giants." Matthews deserves respect.
@yiseng46024 жыл бұрын
Remember during his Stanley Matthews played with hard leathered ball unlike the lighter bouncy ball being utilised nowadays. If I were to make a comparison I would rather Stanley Matthews as far more superior than those mega superbucks and braggard sort of modern day era footballers Lionel Messi and Cristianaldo Ronaldo. When Matthews began his football career he like many others were being paid under the maximum which was enforced until 1961.Much less when the season was over. Today's modern era footballers are even paid appearance fee in millions unlike Matthews time. It was also unfortunate that Stanley Matthews football career was cut short and affected by World War Two when he was in his prime.When peace time football resumed in 1946 Matthews was already 31. The post war years were a turn around for Matthews whether for his club Blackpool FC or for his country England.He was disappointed in two FA Cup finals in 1948 losing to Manchester United and in 1951 losing to Newcastle United.But his third FA Cup final at Wembley in 1953 was third time lucky.At 38,Matthews at last won his FA Cup winners medal in perhaps the greatest ever FA Cup final as Blackpool inspired by Matthews's wizardry wing play came down from 3-1 to win 4-3. But not everyone knows that Stanley Matthews fasted for three days before an England international match.It was his ritual but then that was Stanley Matthews. It was in the early post war years that Matthews featured and played together with arguably the greatest ever England national team that trounced Italy 4-0 in Turin and then massarced Portugal 10-0 in Lisbon.Players such as Frank Swift,Billy Wright,Tom Finney,Stanley Mortensen and Tommy Lawton.If the World Cup had been played between 1946-1948 England would have no problems in winning the World Cup. It was in the 1950s that a matured Stanley Matthews was at his scintillating best although England were humiliated 1-0 by the United States in the 1950 World Cup at Belo Horizonte but Matthews did not play against the Yankees. Six years later Stanley Matthews was voted European Footballer of the Year.That same year he ran rings around Nilton Santos when England beat Brazil 4-2 in a friendly at Wembley. In 1961 he returned to Stoke and played for them until 1965 at the age. Yes Stanley Matthews in his prime was better than Lionel Messi or Ronaldo.And his dribbling skills was amazing and mesmerizing.

The ball was exactly the same weight then as it is now. 14 to 16 ounces in old money, at the start of the game its in the rules. Back then in wet or damp conditions the old leather ball tended to absorb moisture and get heavier sometimes quite a bit depending on how wet it was.

The other thing to remember is that most of the KZbin compilations show Matthews when he was around forty-one (for instance) and Garrincha when he was around twenty-six. Matthews was a very different type of winger during his playing preak: it's just that most of his play was given non-official status due to the war.

Matthews must have been something when younger. Even in his 40s (and 50s!!) his acceleration from a standing start was astounding. The only way to stop him was to foul him, which they did but he was as tough as old boots too. Garrincha is the only other player I've seen (in videos) that had that kind of acceleration. Having said that acceleration is not the only factor. Finney didnt have that extreme quickness (although still way beyond the norm) but he could change direction at speed with both feet while keeping close control and had a phenomenal feint. I only saw him live once and Best many times; a toss-up. None of the other dribblers were that good. Cruyff could have been but wasnt as tough. Maradona was almost as tough but one-footed. The young Messi was exciting but also one footed; later he became a tumbler. C Ronaldo could never beat a man one-on-one. Brazilian Ronaldo was in their league for 2-3 years until injuries. Pele wasnt tough. He was kicked out of 66 with treatment that Best got every week (and, I surmise, was even worse for Matthews and Fiiney).

It is fantasy to say who was the greatest ever at any sport, all you can say is that Mathews was a great football player of his era and he bought in many new ideas and ways of how the game should be played. Having watched many great players of all types of sports since about 1960, I firmly believe that most sportsmen of exceptional talents would have been able to adjust to the modern ways and changes of todays way of playing their own sport.

@MrHokeykokey I agree tbh. Indeed upon studying George Best, his dip of the shoulder as used in the 60s looks very 21st century. If you look at that wonder goal for San Jose, he looks every bit the 2011 super star, and on a flat astroturf pitch he was able to adapt and show beautiful skill and body posture that would have got him into todays best sides (fitness provided)

One thing that the highlight reels of Garrincha don't show you is that he had a tendency to drift in & out of matches while "Sir Stan" was always focused & willing to shred the opposition. Which one you would prefer would depend upon which individual style of ball artistry catches your fancy, I suppose.

Ferenc Puskas said that that the great hungarian team of 1953 viewed him as a giant. Nilton Santos, the great Brazilian full back shook his hand and said to him ''You are the King'' after Mathews gave him the runaround in 1956. Charlton was a 2 footed player, mainly left foot but had a clout in his right foot , long time ago. I especially remember that he used to get OVER the ball when he hit it, that's why the shot used to keep low, often a daisy cutter. When I was a kid, we used the play football in the school playgrounds with a tennis ball, I wonder if thats why the older players used to keep the ball low when shooting. Now the players often lean back as they shoot, thus making the ball balloon over the crossbar.

No I have not read that book, but I was self taught at playing footbal and think that playing with a small ball helped your skills a lot when dribbling, shooting etc. Many of the old greats used to play in the streets with things like old cans, tins etc. Many kids in this day and age in uk are obese, too much time on the pc etc. When they play football they turn up in full replica kits etc, but lack so many skillls that kids years ago had from kicking around in playgrounds and streets.

Of course Greaves was a master finisher, best I ever saw, often just calmly passed the ball into the net!

Very difficult to say, because the modern game is played at a faster pace and players are at a much greater level of fitness. Even if a player is a hard-tackler, if a player of messi's pace and with Messi's control came at him, it would be very difficult to actually get near him. An example being George Best, players would try and kick off the pitch, but he was too quick, and I think Messi would be the same.

@G1S1W The title of this video is clearly sarcastic. It is meant to highlight how primative a player of that era is. Sure Matthews was a great player of his time, but his dribbling does not compare to the likes of Messi's now

I can name endless amounts of reasons why messi is 100 times better than him for example, messi fitness is much better than what Matthews was because Matthews smoked. Football is more competitive and also played at a much higher intensity today than back then. Messi scores way more goals than he ever did and so on..

He never smoked in his life and the only time he ever drank any alcohol was once out of the FA Cup. He trained himself from childhood until after retirement to a fitness level that humans can rarely reach, and therefore he played until he was 50 at the TOP LEVEL of English football. Messi will probably leave and play for some Argentinian team or at a much lower level of competition by the time he's 35. This is a cigarette advertisement, that doesn't mean he smoked.

BHBarton is right. Matthews never smoked. He was way ahead of his time in terms of diet and fitness. Used to swear by carrot juice and always fasted on a Monday. So hard to say how good a player he was because of the limited film footage.

Matthews played nearly 80 years ago, he is no way better than Messi... I honestly think i could become a professional football player if i can re-wind the future back to 1930s/1940s... Just have a look at how shit the defenders are and how different the game is.
@cooldaddy28772 жыл бұрын
You havnt got a clue. The defenders back then were tougher and tried to break legs. I doubt you would last five minutes with the heavy leather boots which got heavier in the rain, the jerseys which were made of wool and tripled in weight in the rain, the bumpy pitches, the rough defenders and the weight of the ball. It was common for players to smear their foreheads in grease to take the sting out of the ball when headering.

The game was also a lot more physical. Nowadays football has been turned into a non-contact sport. You immediately get a yellow or a red card. Players like George Best, Pele or Maradona were fouled like crazy and had to perform. I actually do not think that Messi is as great as the media makes him out to be. Nowadays the top teams can assemble all the great players on 1 team. Therefore the game becomes easier and there's less competition in domestic leagues.

The defenders were also easier to trick before,while now even defenders from Las Palmas are better at defending than defenders from some top team back in 50' and 60'
