Stanley sharp shooter stapler fix

Many thanks for posting this. It was exactly what I needed to repair AND put together my Stanley sharp shooter stapler. It made the putting together go much easier. One trick I found was in putting the springs back in was to put the spring into the top plastic piece and then use a small screw driver inserted into the spring about 2-3 coils up from the bottom to lift and compress the spring and then put it onto the bottom "post". Thanks again!! PS - my problem occurred after the stapler had been stored for months with the handle locked down - from now on it will be only stored in the handle up position!

I had to wedge a dime under the rubber bumper/cushion to raise the metal spring bar so the teeth of the mechanism would engage with the spring. once again thank you for posting this only video. I've been having this problem for awhile now and was surprised that your video was the only one that addressed it. Seeing all of those parts made me anxious to even attempt the repair but what the heck I figured that I had nothing to lose. Took the E-clip off, removed the pin and then the cover. Sure enough the hooks were dragging on the rubber pad. Instead of taking everything apart, I used an Exacto knife to scrape the rubber pad under each of the hooks. Reassembled and it worked ! I'm glad you posted this, I am having the same problem. One suggestion though. Put down a white towel or sheets of paper so viewers can see the parts and how you configure them. Other than that I really appreciate you taking the time to share this. :-)

Thank you so much for this video. After I took this same model Stanley staple gun apart, I had no idea as to how to put this back together until I saw this very helpful video. The suggestions by others on this thread of using tape is an excellent idea as well as using a screwdriver to depress the springs made this task much easier. After scraping the rubber piece, the gun still did not work. I finally inserted a metal washer under the rubber piece and had to use a hammer to drive it in because the other suggested methods did not work. After reassembly, my staple gun finally works after many years of sitting on the shelf. Thank you to all of you with your wonderful suggestions and especially to this video on reassembly.

I took mine apart to see if there was anything I could fix, and as soon as I pulled the front piece off, everything came tumbling out -- no idea how it all went together. Thank you Brian! Your video was so helpful. If it wasn't for your video, I would have had to go out and buy a new stapler. I paused, rewound, and watched several times and followed your steps. The only part I had questions about was that little piece that sits on top of the cam assembly that holds the bottom of the springs and is held by the grooves of each plastic flange that flanks either side of the cam assembly, but I figured it out. AND, most importantly, my stapler works again.

Thank you. Your video was extremely helpful. I had no issue with the springs. I set the spring guide where it should be and then inserted the first spring into the plastic top and used a small flat head screwdriver to compress the spring and set it into the spring guide. Repeated for the other spring. I did have to really turn up the brightness and pause at key spots to see some detail. Thanks again.

Thanks Brian Mann! I was ready to toss mine like one of the people below. My problem with my TR200 was almost the same. The rubber thing was too compressed to let the leaf spring to get above the catch. I pushed a dime (yep $.10) under the rubber part (towards the business end of the stapler/bottom) and shaved just a hair off the inside inset. I had to shave some off because the part that goes back to latch was catching on the newly raised bottom. I swear it works better than it did 15 years ago when I bought it.

I did the same with my stapler. I was able to slide a dime under the base of the rubber cushion while I was releasing the pressure from the spring metal on the hammer. Thanks so much for that hack. I rarely used that stapler in 20 years which is probably why the rubber cushion gets compressed

This was super helpful. Thank you. Searched for a diagram explosion for a few minutes and found your video. The spring guide threw me for a loop. I had a similar problem with the fingers not latching on as well as they should have. Shaved the rubber part down like you recommended and now it works but there isn't an auto reset on the handle. It has to be manually reset.

Very good video, simple and effective. My stanley sharpshooter has not been used much and one day tried to and didn't work. Took it appart and the same problem you show on your video: the rubber pad was crumbled into pieces and no way to fix it, only a new pad could solve the problem. This is a shit of tool and would never buy again any tool from Stanley.

The rubber had worn down exactly as you depicted - I just used some needle nose pliers to push the spring up and slid a little bit of plastic in there I cut off one of those flosser sticks lol - that was enough height to allow the teeth to grab again, I just KNEW that thing wasn't finished, been meaning to fix it for three years haha thanks much, you are the bomb bro and the internet rulz B-)

Hi thanks for disassembly instructions. Mine wasn't stapling because the hooks slipped off the leaf spring instead of lifting the spring up. The hook tips had worn so I filed new hook faces. These now catch the spring and it works fine

This dude is some sort of puzzle genius. Good luck. I'm tossing my mess. UPDATE: After a lot of tinkering and watching this vid, I managed to put it back together! Kids think they're pretty cool speed cubing Rubick's -- They should try Stapler reassembly. I found a trick using a pen to weave both springs in at once. Hardest part was actually getting the top back on. Not sure why that's so tight and difficult. You get it on fine. Anyway, victory it''s back together. I levelled up my patience. Sadly, still doesn't work. Time to start over.

Tip: Use some strips of adhesive tape to hold the two plastics side sliders and handle in position whilst you install. Gives you an extra pair of hands to do the rest of the tricky stuff and it all stays together nicely exactly as you want things positioned for installation. Makes a HUGE difference! NB Remember to remove the tape to these 2x plastic guides before you install the final covers!

Thank you for the video. I had a similar problem; the rubber block compressed over time which didn't allow the hooks to engage. I shimmed underneath the rubber block with a piece of plastic and now it works just fine. Over time the tension from the flat springs seems to have compressed the rubber block just enough to not allow the flat springs to rebound enough for the hooks to engage. I have a Craftsman 68447 which is very similar to yours.

Thanks You! Just went to use our stapler this morning and it wasn't "catching" at all. Took the rubber piece out, shaved it down and re-assembled. It works again. I wonder if it's better to store the gun with the fingers engaged (handle in up position). That might keep the rubber in the right shape.

Same issue with my Stanley TR100, but I had to add a metal spacer, 1/32", on top of rubber block to lift tension springs higher and allow lever to hook underneath them. Also I did not have to remove handle and lever mechanism. While holding onto both sides of lever mechanism, depress handle, press stapler down on block of wood to relieve tension, then slide rubber block out. Now slide rubber block and spacer back in together. This lifts the tension leaf springs up higher to allow the lever hooks to engage leaf springs. I think in time and usage the rubber block gets smashed thinner allowing the leaf springs rest lower not allowing the lever hooks to engage. Hope it makes since and helps Mike

Do not wait until you need this tool to work. If it's giving you trouble, wait for a rainy day to attempt this. It's difficult to reassemble after it falls apart in disassembly. So @ 4:55-- he says essentially get the spring thing back in place. Never got to see what he did. Do the rounded ears go up and that's where the springs sit on? The handle reassembly is just mind-boggling. I'm nearly to the end of this but I have to give it up until tomorrow and start drinking. lol! Thank you for the video though.

Great video, thanks. I had a similar issue where the pawls weren't engaging the leaf spring. The plastic block in mine wasn't damaged at all. I worked out it must be that the 2 springs had lost their strength and weren't pressing hard enough to keep the two pawls engaged with the leaf spring. I stretched the two springs a bit, put it back together and now it works fine. The easy way to put the fiddly bottom spring retainer in place is to put the two plastic side plates in place and retain with one hand's thumb and forefinger and drop the bottom spring holder in place with the other. Put the springs in bottom first and it goes together easily.

Thanks for the video. I have a TR 200 which is the same design as yours except it is yellow instead of Chrome. The hooks were not engaging the spring because the spring was falling below the point where the hooks could engage. I got the hooks engaged on the spring and there was a gap of about 1 mm between the spring and the block. Apparently the block, which seems to be made of a kind of wax, compressed through multiple firings of the stapler. I will try and fill the gap with some type of cardstock, I guess.

I just fixed mine last night and you don't need to take it apart down to the plastic piece. All you have to do is take the metal outer cover off and use an X-Acto knife to shave off the top of the plastic block to allow the latches to engage. Boom Roasted!

I agree with Gee Dee it's hard for an oldie like me to see what you are doing against the black surface. Also, maybe lay the parts out so we can see what they look like? It was hard to see what you were grabbing once it was in the bucket. You do have a clear speaking voice which makes your video easy to follow. I'm too cheap to buy a new staple gun also!

You were the only person I could find that actually took this apart and could have helped me . Sadly you went way too fast and working black Parts on a black mat I couldn't see the parts . If I was experienced as to what is inside of a heavy duty stapler and where all the parts go I wouldn't need to watch your video. For instance what's a cam? These staplers are great when they work . I took mine apart turned it on its side and everything fell out.. not a good feeling cause I didnt even get to see where things went. If you are dealing with a limp lever ( no resistance when you pull the lever)that wont fire off a staple you will have to shim the rubber piece on the bottom that he just showed . The hooks that actuate the spring wont compress and engage the flat spring under the rubber part. because the rubber part has flattened out you loose the travel needed. You can make shims out of a credit card or some sort of durable plastic shaped to fit under neath the rubber component. To keep things in place you can use painters tape or packing tape cause you will fight them to the point of bad words... hope this helps. PS Stanley built this stapler to fail and confound with their crappy intentionally bad design. You can do it guys !

Hey Thanks, I want that bowl.... I was at the range trying to staple up some targets when mine went bad. I took it apart and one of the two tangs in the center of the mechanism which is part of the main frame broke off. It's none fixable and went to the can. For the life of me I can't figure out how this broke stapling paper to card board it was like brand new. This stapler is just junk. I done with Stanley now. Thanks again for the video.

i have same stapler but the hammer works fine,, just never hits the staple... in other words the action of gun works but there is no staple coming out. checked staple size, tension on spring and WD40 and vinegar got all the rust and gunk out.... any suggestion?

Your striker plate is not connected. Disassemble the outer cover and realign the tab into the slot and it will fire.

The top "tricky piece" that looks like an "M" when you hold it up (sorta) goes in vertically with the "M" bumps up, each bump being where the bottom of each spring goes. (the spring tops sit in each of the plastic holes at the top of this whole area). The rt and left edges of this piece slide into the groove on each flat piece that holds it all together. Ask me more if this doesn't make sense. :)

Another success story here. Thanks! Mine just needed to be cleaned inside but there's no way I'd have got it back together on my own. Change playback quality to 1080p and switch to fullscreen mode if you're having trouble with the contrast or seeing the details clearly.

Did the same thing only I screwed with it for about an hour and couldn't figure out why it was not catching. I was literally walking to throw it away think I could have bought a new one by now. But just by chance I'm going to Google it. Sure enough I fixed it while watching the video by the end I was done. Thank you. They don't make em like this anymore so I'm VERY HAPPY. What I took from this is that it is possible to repair the Sharpshooter for free. However, the lighting, camera angle and putting the black components on a black work mat made it impossible to see what was being done. I think the key to fixing this failure to latch problem is not to disturb the trigger mechanism and to stop the plastic block at the bottom of the gun from interfering with the pawl that pulls up the hammer. I did it by shaving some plastic off. Maybe tape the spring guides and trigger in place before doing anything because once they pop out you'll be struggling with figuring out this video in order to put it all back. together again.
