The Lisson Gallery is great for the art that they bring forward. I love love Stanley’s work and been following him for several years. It was amazing to see his early work when he was just beginning to move into his grid system, but still with those loose lines which I find extremely interesting. However, the most amazing and challenging aspect of the grid and colour block system is how he keeps it so fresh from his many prep drawings to the large canvases. And the simplicity of the final work, it looks like a few blocks of colour and it is anything but. One final comment, I looked for every video on Stanley over the years and I still missed the ones in the James Kalm massive vault of films.

Any masters responsibility is to condense experience into spirit and Stanley definitely has that under control. Beautiful post, thank you James!

I loved what you said about how Stanley Whiney's work is much like meeting him in person : open, friendly, spontaneous . Not verbatim but I think it was the gest of your observation. There's something quite endearing about his paintings. Like an authentic person. A man who is trustworthy. They emit something that is especially nourishing, even magical. I heard him say in an interview that he cares about if a work has magic. It is a quality that is hard to define but you know it when you see it. Kicking myself for not having experienced this show in person but at least we have our beloved James Kalm to share his visit.

Very nice, thanks for this. I've always liked this artist but have never "seen" the work. The close-ups help, I like it more. On my list of "must see".

James, I have just played this latest review of an exhibition, but I hardly watched the video, Sorry. This is because I was painting while listening to you commenting and I found this influential enough not to need to watch…. (I will promise to watch later.) Just listening to phrases you use when describing how the nuances and touches of an artist and how they make joyous gestures that appeal to yourself and suggest the quirky differences that separate an artist from another or relates with homage to fellow painters , It is hearing these lines that have helped me realise how to be free when approaching my own artwork, during the last year. How to known when not to fuss or to panic with what I’ve just laid on the canvas and to accept or just push through with a "What the Hell!" Approach until I am satisfied. This may mean wiping off paint as well as applying paint, but through your films I have started to see where my painting is going. This may not make any sense to you but all I know it is helping me! Please never stop reviewing exhibitions and thank you, I am glad I have found your site and look forward to your next video. Thank you James and a big thank you to your Kate. Yours, a painter from across the pond….

Paul Lewey .you gotta thumps up from James . James is the best at exposing the New York art scene . for all it's faults , it's still the best in the World . James is good at helping promoting artists and Galleries . and his videos are art appreciation classes at their best .Paul i give you a second thumps up .

Inspirational, like jazz and fine wine. (In that obviously anyone can paint squares, and like jazz it doesn't matter if you missed a bit, and probably best left locked away in a cellar.)

I see in his later work he paints more formally. I still like his joy in color, but I prefer the older, less mathematical approach to the organization of blocks and sections.
@cliffdariff746 жыл бұрын
He must use lots of a turps or a juicey medium of sorts to get those colors 'sliding' across each other, and white too to get those pastels....I'm feeling Gunther Forg here too, pls do any show of his in future 😉

"Half ass, half ass", that equals to no ass, I think, I flunked math, so that makes us our "NO ASS" reporter... lol. But keep it up James, I want you to review my work in a NY gallery sometime in the future, for now I love watching your videos. Late.

@@jameskalm OK, thanks for calling me out, yup, your right, half and half is a quarter. But I'm an artist, and I was just responding to your "half ass, half ass, half ass" comment, so sorry you can't take a bad "math" joke. Late.

I do love your vids but I always skip the first 2 minutes : it's Nice of you to offer a visibility to those street musicians but the sound is always super loud with a bad quality and the pieces they play are rarely interesting... In brief I would enjoy even more your vids without those annoying intros... It's only m'y opinion... That said, thanks again for the exciting content of your channel
@jameskalm5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your critique of the musical intros, I appreciate your honesty. But, if you take the time to look as some of the other feed back, you'll find that you're in a tiny minority... (It's okay to skip the intros, or pod down the sound.)-JK

I try and be open minded when it comes to artist and their art, but I gotta say I don't get Whitney at all or why he would be considered relevant. It just seems pretentious to me, but thanks for the exposure.

Garbage. How anyone could put this crap forward as what they have to say artisticly is sickening.
