I take the Mecalac MC-8 to the Brickyard & test its claims. I push its limits to see if it can do what it says it can do.

great dealership, im from ohio and got a 6mcr mecalac from trenchers plus last year. We use it for downspouts and sewer installs mostly, have used a skid steers brush grapple, harley rake, and rock hound with it as well on different projects. The only issues i have come across is that it weighs more than your average skid steer so slightly more yard damage (imprints from the tracks) and the skid steer attachments get offset slightly since they are centered on the boom and not the house. thanks for showing this machine off at the equipment show a few years back thats what got us interested in them in the first place

I’ve had the 8MCR for 18 months now. I have about 100 hrs on it. My first ex/skid. Sold my Cat 420D backhoe to get it. It’s for personal use on 2.5 acre home in Southern California. Hilly yard with 20’ elevation drop. I take pallets of pavers down 21% slope. A little scary even with blade down. My uneven yard makes for a bouncy ride. The wheeled version might be a better choice for my yard, but it’s a bit higher and does not get into tight areas as well. I can use the offset to a small degree to compensate for off-camber work. It’s super nice to extend pallets or buckets where the Cat backhoe could not be maneuvered. A bit of a gas guzzler compared to my Deere 210LE skip loader and New Holland 1630 Boomer. The skid steer bucket is 900 pounds empty. Loaded, forget about fully extending to the side unless you want to tip it. Front with blade down is at limit when heaped with heavy dirt. Keep load low and close for comfort and less strain on turret. Being able to ex and shovel by reversing buckets is very useful when working near retaining walls. I use the skidsteer adapter plate to run lighter buckets from my New Holland and a hydraulic auger. I was going to get the tilt-rotator attachment but paused on the $30,000 cost of the frill. Wish I had as cost has gone up. I think a good skidsteer operator can outperform the 8MCR in most scenarios, but some situations the MCR is a better choice. I appreciate its tele-handler function the most in my yard. It’s a very well made and designed machine. I saw it at the Las Vegas ConAg Expo in 2017 and 2020. Great demo. I decided my Cat was too big for my yard, sold it and got the Mecalac. Good choice for my use. Beat the multipurpose JCB offerings. Lifting 3200 pound pallets was key for me. That ruled out the smaller 6MCR. I’d get the counterweight as a hedge for side loads.

Thanks Stan for asking the hard questions. I think I like it better than the JCB Teleskid. Not so crazy about that back sprocket, as the teeth might come in contact with the pavement and wear out over time, whereas most skid loaders the sprocket is at the highest point. Track changing /remount will be easier on this machine. It's not quite a zero-tail-swing machine, but looks good. Not too crazy about some of those exposed hydraulic lines because if you are going to push trees over with it, they could be snagged by falling branches or demolition type work of taking down a barn. Some of those lines between the boom joints look like they could be pinched, stressed. What is the hydraulic flow rating of this machine, can it run a big mower/mulcher? It's not going to be able to get under trees with the cab, but the boom gives you a pretty good reach under trees too, but it's going to contact multi-trunk trees. Are those tracks skid steer steel impregnated tracks or the weaker excavator tracks? The added lifting height and capacity is great to load high trucks and be able to pack down compost/dirt into a truck and help level it down. The tilt boom would be good for taper cutting a ditch. A new skid steer and excacator would be around $160k before taxes and dealer junk fees, so what does this all-in-one unit retail for?

I looked into the prices of these and just can’t justify the cost. One thing I did realize is many residential jobs I have run into, have overhead lines coming to the house, when using this as a skid steer to transport material the height of this machine becomes a hazard as opposed to a lower sitting skid steer.

The 6MCR collapses down to 109 inches or just over 9 feet. The largest Bobcat CTL is just over 7 feet. If this one spec is your deciding factor, it will be limited, but these machines are not aimed at doing everything, but to be a more versatile tool. They are good for a single operator who only wants to haul, insure and operate 1 machine as opposed to 2 or 3.

These are used all over Europe for the last 10 years or so. The design criteria for Europe is different than the USA as generally smaller spaces / jobs so a small contractor needs to pack a lot of bang for the buck in one machine if possible. Also access for transport and storage of 3-4 machines on site is an issue too as even the smallest of jobs could do with an excavator, skid steer and loader come crane. Most European venues do not have lowboys nor the access for a lot of equipment so this type of machine make sense. Downside is any mechanical / hydraulic issues the job is shut down there is no other machinery around to get you out of a bind but that said you are only maintaining 1 machine also!

That's a truly unique and interesting machine. So if a contractor has a need for both a skid loader and excavator, they can purchase this one machine and have essentially both, as opposed to purchasing two machines....having to maintain two machines...having to transport two machines to the jobsite and back...substantial cost savings right there. Very cool. I dig videos like this Stan. More please as time and scheduling permit!

Personally I was thinking how nice it would be to have the 4 way hydraulic joint at the bucket mount like on some of the euro peon only models I`m sure it would cut down on the heavy duty portion of excavating but is a usefull feature in my figuring. But a typical skid of block often go 3600-4000 lb. another con I see is it has a lot more hydraulic hoses than a typical track hoe for those that use em for what they are worth will be crying adbout blowing hoses on occasion. would`nt mind having one to play with in Ohio.

This thing could pick up a mini-x and toss it across the yard. This is way more functional that what people seem to think here. The sales guy was slow and clumsy, (no disrespect), so hard to tell how productive it would be. My guess is 2 of these units, with two experienced operators, would beat 4 separate units (2 skids and 2 Ex) in a production comparison, especially when you consider maintenance, cost, and transportation. This thing is an actual excavator with pretty crazy power for its size.

It can be safely tested to the limits. Looks like it handled it really well though for the size of the unit, I'd like to stick a 12" bucket on it and see how well it rips ground!

That’s two loaded machine’s. Full cabs, ac, high flow, 6-1, etc. I’d rather the two machine’s. As neat as it is, it simply wouldn’t put out the work two machine’s like I have working in tandem. I don't think you really demonstrated some of the things that sets the Mecalac apart. For instance, this machine when operated as a mini excavator, has a digging depth of 12' ... Not that you would want to try to go to that depth with the skid loader bucket attached, but think about how this machine could be used in skid-loader mode to grade an embankment without having to move the machine. And that's just one way this machine is capable of working outside the box. Just one question: How much?

I can see how in the right circumstances it would be handy. Like loading out of piles into vehicles, like mulch, gravel, or even dirt. On a jobsite trying to do production not the best of either type of machines.

This would be an incredilbe machine for smaller companies, this is a do everything piece of equipment. Maybe doesn't make sense if you already have a bunch of other machinery, that will be better in its specific niche. But just having a single machine to service and insure and move, that can do most anything would be a real boon to smaller companies.

Operating equivalent, it's gonna struggle versus 2 machines. But imagine how you maximize your staff and job load! A 2 person crew with just this can knock out a complex job where you would maybe need two trucks, trailers, and 3 or 4 people otherwise. That allows a 10-12 person company to really ramp up operations. I think this would be an amazing business amplifier for a crew like DMF.

For those that don't know, Mecalac has been in business for many, many years. There are plenty of videos on KZbin about them. I realise that the 2 guys operating are salesmen, but their are functions on these machines that they obviously dont know about. I now that when lifting, that there is a function that keeps the forks or bucket level, or can be used for bank sloping etc. The geometry of that boom makes them exceptional for lifting. For those that are asking, yes you can fit a grapple or any ter attachment to it, just like a 'normal' excavator, & they can be fitted with laser control for leveling site works. There is even a video of the Mecalac 15 tonne wheeled machine lifting & carrying, traveling, & placing a big concrete water/sewerage tank, from a trailer on the street, into the back yard of a house. These machines are incredibly versatile. Watch this 8MCR on demo at a European show, with a good operator in it. I'd buy one tomorrow if i had the use for it, which I did a few years ago, but life circumstances changed. The other excavator worth looking at is the 'Menzi Muck' !

I get the concept if it. Just think if you put a rototilt hitch an Scandinavian buckets on the digger it would be as even more versatile an more efficient, plus's it comes with the pinching grabbing fingers on the back if the hitch. The only advantage I see with this machine is its lifting center of gravity
@AndrewShafer
@AndrewShafer 2 жыл бұрын
It's a sweet machine, found some used ones under 80k for a 2012, but for 160k or more on the newer side, you could easily get a skid steer and mini excavator for the same money. Also seems like it would be slow for grading and other typical skid steer tasks, but a really cool idea. Impressive how easily it could swing around 5000 pounds

@@mekosmowski that's true, it would be great for a quick project, but I think you're still winning with two machines even after the extra time and diesel...especially at $200k. Plus you can bill more for having two machines on site lol

Still not sure what makes this so unique? It seems to have two selling points based on that claim. 1/ the bucket can be backed up by the 'dozer blade, but other machines have that so there's something special about it? 2/ there is mantion of the controls being able to be switched but, to me, it just looks like it's going to be more confusing for the operator as the boom, dipper, etc, will operate differently to the same inputs - like getting the hang of the pedals depending on the track orientation, only more so. This may be down to my using excavators almost exclusively, heck I can't recall the last time I used a skid-steer. Oh, I thought I recalled seeing something like the loader before - you looked at the Mecalac product line at a show a couple years ago, according to the suggested viewing link 👍 For those that missed it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqi2qICAp9d9mKc
