My grandmother Dester White and Mr.L.Dawson use to sing this song in their gospel group back in the 60's. Mr.L.Dawson has passed on now but, my grandmother Dester White is still here and still singing these songs today. Believe it or not!We love this kind of gospel singing down here in Mississippi!The Land Boys of Millry, Alabama.

I saw them at the Filmore East long ago. Just Pops, Mavis and the sisters and thier brother. NO BACKUP BAND (I forgot who they opened for). They brought the house down. The ladies came down the aisles (Mavis shook my brothers hand). It was one of the most moving, Soulful shows I've ever seen.
@bobaldo23392 жыл бұрын
I saw them singing gospel in church twice in Pittsburgh (in maybe '59 & 60). Pops shook everybody's hand as we entered the church.

It's the story of the oppressed in this world. Simply born into a cold, unforgiving world & beat down by society for being poor & uneducated, can break a person down. A life like that is enough to make anybody cry out, "Lord, why am I treated so bad!".

I've loved Cannonball Adderley's version of this for more than forty years, and I finally got around to checking out the original. Amazingly soulful.

You gotta listen to “You’re nothing but a hound dog” sung by the giant it was written for the very day the songwriters met her.

In Chicago, the early 60's allowed viewing of the Staple Singers on a Sunday gospel broadcast channel called "Jubilee Showcase." Back then many greats lived on the south side. I remember sitting at a locale restaurant where Pops was eating. I admire the Staple family for their musical contributions.

Yes, that's it! And thanks for providing the name. Would you happen to know the name of the host of Jubilee Showcase? What an interesting broadcast which included many gospel greats of that time.

Pops and Hubert Sumlin took their Charlie Patton inspiration to Chicago and plugged in and rocked the world...passing the tradition to Curtis Mayfield, who did his thing. R. Kelly almost kept it real and Common showed much respect. I have high hopes for Jennifer Hudson, if she doesn't disappear from dieting. Feed your tradition and PASS IT ON Chicago.

Part II: One more note--I believe that NYU film student Amalie Rothchild came up with most of the film segments that were shown before and during the light show. An unofficial Fillmore theater photographer, she produced one of the most comprehensive photo records of the place, which can be seen in her marvelous photographic memoir: Live At The Fillmore East.

Thanks for your response, macvoutie. As I recall, Bill Graham had to occasionally berate the audience not to stand, jump, or dance on the chairs as they were destroying them. It has been said that there were plenty of narcs down there as well, though they were apparently looking for those trading in harder stuff and didn't hassle the pot-heads.

@witchcerridwen "Moaning",in this manner,is your spirit connecting with God's Holy Spirit,within yourself,so that intense needs that you may not know or understand how to express in words can be deciphered and met,through your faith in the ALMIGHTY GOD,who is our Creator. Satan can not interfere with this because he has no way of knowing what our spirit and soul needs.God does.Praise our Father.It has nothing to do with "tongues".
