Star Citizen: How Reputation Works

With some of the presumptions about the concept art that Jared showcased in Star Citizen I thought it was time to do a video on how Reputation works, because it does not match the broad definition of what Reputation is or that it more resembles the crimestat system.
If you are unfamiliar with the show that I am using clips from to illustrate my point it is Firefly Episode 2 "Train".

Three thumbs up for a solid Firefly reference. A robust reputation system will be a good progression alternative to skill trees. Reputation will be the real currency in Star Citizen. Loss of reputation on death or failure will be painful. My only concern is that the reputation system will be a gated path for ships, components, or equipment. As long as reputation stays as a way to regulate access to missions or NPC interactions we will be golden.

That is a very solid take on CIG's potential direction. It is in line with what is already in game. There is one thing you might have overlooked however. I suspect that some reputation (Factions) will start dealing with you until you have reached a specific reputation in something else. I could see, for example, that XenoThreat will not offer any missions until you have Rank 2 rep in a pair of lawless paths. I suspect that there is something similar with Miles right now. I tend to not get invited to a drink until I have ranked up a couple of times with Bounty Hunters. However, this COULD just be RNJesus spawning the mission independently, I just notice it after my bounty hunter's guild has leveled up.

Yes building on that will be part of it, and built upon with Reputation 2.0. But it will only be a qualifier to enter into the path, not an actual reputation gainer.

@RatBagDad

Seems like a solid enough summary of the reputation mechanics. You mention the skill-use-advancement-system that CIG are reluctant to implement. I feel that it could be done in certain scenarios that don't directly effect other players, like skill in repairing module damage when that becomes a thing. If such a system was ever introduced I'd like to see it happen with skill decay, so you need to keep doing that skill to maintain a level of competence. For instance, a player could build up a high skill level in ship maintenance which would only be achievable through working as crew on other player's ships and actually repairing damage. The player could have some nice but not game breaking bonuses like passive repair speed or success chance modifiers. This would make that particular player a highly sought after crew member. This could also be reflected through the player-on-player reputation/rating system that was hinted at. Anyway, just my early morning pre coffee ramblings.. pay it no mind.
@RaysGuide

It is a solid path. Sandboxes are nice, but missions are what drives the narrative and character along. If this means hundreds of varied mission types I’m happy. Business wise it also paves the way for people to want to have different characters to follow different paths. Now choice is small and the money trees direct how to play for the most part.

I did like seeing more not quite legal but not blatant murder options for people who want to skirt the law. That said, we've seen a lot of concept stuff lately, and things planned. Not a lot of solid info on more immediate items. I get that they don't want to pimp, say, salvage and then not deliver. But, pretty pictures and loose promises don't do a lot to get me excited about the near future and currently planned releases. I'm not part of the current angry mob, but I do want to see visible progress on a scale that shows that the expansion of their staff is well-managed.

I'm not certain I fully follow what you're describing here, which seems to be a solid reputation with an organization rather than with a type of mission. When I first saw these I was thinking of Elite:Dangerous and their reputation system which is *very* activity-oriented. But reputation by action vs reputation with an organization often conflicts -- if you kidnap an opposing org's president you won't automatically get positive kidnapping reputation (and get kidnapping jobs from that opposing org).

kzbin.info/www/bejne/roexYn-DZrNlkLs from 3:54 onward clearly describes reputational changes can be associated with a whole bunch of activities beyond doing missions for NPC's . They have the ability to associated Character behavior with reputational changes . I think you have focused far too much on reputation gains by mission as the only mechanism they will use . For example I expect them to add a negative reputation drift for repeated criminal behaviors in a certain jurisdiction - say Crusader - which would end up with you being effectively attacked on Sight when you approach Crusader controlled facilities or ships . Ths reputation drift based on character behavior ( and repeated Crime Stat Violations ) is how you'll end up being labeled in game as a Pirate for instance .
