You obviously have not seen much of the older stuff it's actually very shallow. Just inside jokes of two friends who don't have anyone else. Theres layers in the later episodes. that's when it started to go deep as he was trying new ideas

While it wasnt as "smart" as it is today, back then you could still tell there was some humanity to Beavis and that he had some intelligence but Butthead was always keeping him down. To your point it was far more subtle back then but it was there, especially in later seasons of the original run.
