To be fair, even though in the games canonically he's a terrible pilot, he's supposed to be a master in a tank (or Landmaster, if you prefer) yet , for some reason he never ends up in one.

Sometime I like to think Fox needed a fourth member in his team and Slippy was the only one available so he just decided to throw the mechanic in an Arwing despite him having no place flying one.

Everyone always calls Slippy the total f*ck up. I seriously don’t understand why. Yes, he sucks in an Arwing and is constantly in danger. Reminder: HE’S NOT A F*CKING PILOT!! Slippy is literally the team mechanic who they forced into the cockpit because Fox didn’t have any alternatives. Ironically, Slippy does note this and decides to do something about it in Star Fox Command by upgrading his Arwing into literally being a flying tank that can just shrug off all the hits and kill everything in one or two shots so he doesn’t have to be good at flying anymore.
