It's the board for playing the Knight Hawks campaign game of the Sathar War and moving fleets and when enemy fleets occupy the same star system you then fight it out with chits on the hex map with whatever ships are present.

The only problem with KH I had at the time were the fighters. The only weapon they carried were the Assault Rockets. At the time, my mind space was dominated by Star Wars. Fighters had to be armed with something equivalent to "Blasters." There was an expansion, that was published in a Dragon, that allowed a "Military" fighter to carry a laser battery.

Laser Pod. It did 1d5. Forward firing only. Can't recall the range.

I also played a lot of Traveller. SFKH was great for learning a science fiction game quickly and playing it right out of the box. Traveller required a LOT of assembly in order to play - especially when you're poor and 100 miles away from any town or city with players, and you didn't have any ready to play Traveller games!

My players have told me they like to play Knight Hawks sometimes because it is simpler to play.

I dislike the prerequisite for the spaceship skills. I always ignore them so characters can be pilots or astrogators without a year of play to bone up their pre-reqs.

I never did get to try this one out. I think I read a few choose your own adventure books that were based on it though I think.

It's a fun to run system. Not buried in rules.
