Star-Joy Gold VS Star-Joy Original Comparison

I've tested quite a few budget brands of colored pencils and Star Joys are by far my favorite. It's really evident how much work you put in to support artists using these colored pencils, and the thoughtfulness that it takes to make even budget art materials well. Thank you for all your hard work!

Lori thank you and thanks again, the Star Joy Gold set has improved my coloring 100%. The way you lined up the pencils makes my pictures look like all the colors actually belong together. You really captured the color combinations that a beginner needs to color and blend. I got my set about a month ago and everything I have colored look so put together... Yes! Finally a matte barrel! Even my most expensive pencil sets (Pablo, Polychromos etc.) frustrate the heck out of me because I have to squint and angle the pencil to read the color names. It’s so annoying! Such an important upgrade. ❤️ Hadassah

Love the Swatch chart! I am new to pencils and coloring and the codes are a big help. Having one’s name in lights on Broadway may be exciting but having one’s name on a colored pencil box is really over the top! Thanx to you and to Andy for all the time and effort you put into these. Last weekend I swatched a different set of pencils, and I was squinting and twisting them in the light trying to read the shiny embedded name and number. i can't help but look forward to these new pencils that i'll be able read the name and number easier. One of several reasons i am excited about them!

This set is going to be my Christmas present for myself. I am as excited as a kid waiting on Santa ! As far as poor white pencils go , it’s not limited to Chinese companies. From Crayola to Faber Castell Polychromos the white performs poorly. I do as you have said and keep a Prismacolor White or Derwent Chinese White with my various sets. After I use them up I will give the Holbein White you have suggested a try.

These pencils are visually beautiful. I have noticed that a matte finish, that is not bouncing back the light appears to have greater color saturation. I will wear a matte lip color, when I am going out at night. The color is more intense. It seems that everything has been thought of with this set. I hope that if you ever come up with speciality sets you will do colors to evoke each season . Also I am very happy to know that this is an ecologically conscious set . Great video. I noticed. on the original tin they are designated polychromos pencils. Polychromos is a Faber-Castell trademark. Where do Crawford and black figure? Their 120 set has the same names and numbers as Star-Joy originals. Are they the same? Interesting video thank you.

I love what you've done with the lettering on these! I have a hard time reading the names on my Polychromos pencils. As for white pencils, I like Caran D'Ache Luminance White, and Prismacolor White.

@@ColorMyWorld is there a way to stop the wearing away of the print on the pencil? Like a light coating of clear paint or nail polish? I do that with fake jewelry to protect the color and prevent tarnishing of the piece, it also stops it from turning the skin green.

@@Twylyght1 Yes, use a matt clear top coat. The Star-Joy Golds have the name and number on the back of the pencil so you won't be rubbing on it that often. Lift from the front and you will be fine.

Horray! A pencil set I won’t have to create labels for! I get when a set doesn’t have identifiers (super budget pencils and pencils marketed for children) but the expensive sets including the artist quality sets use fonts that are too tiny and then printed in foil on gloss barrels making them IMPOSSIBLE to read. I have to twist the pencil, squint, use my magnifying glass just to be sure I’m not grabbing the wrong item. I have ended up using prenumbered labels and printing labels with the unique identifiers so that I’m not frustrated trying to complete a drawing. I can’t wait to add these to my collection!

I did it for me LOL, I have all the same issues except the pain is in my shoulders not my hand. I can't read silver foil even with a magnifying glass anymore. Most adult colorists are older. Younger are usually the students and right in the middle are the ones who use professional artist grade pencils. So this was for all us older gals who need some recognition. Now watch how Base Paste makes it so easy to blend and color.

Thank you for such a thorough walk through. I can see this took a great deal of time and effort to create this set. So many wonderful and positive features. I do want to ask about the actual formula and lay down. Are the original and the gold set cores the same formula? Also, I've seen other reviewers saying that the cores come from the same factory as Castle Art soft touch and that the feel of the lay down is very similar. I'm not a fan of the soft touch line so I want to make sure I'm not purchasing a similar pencil. I know the color selection is different but I'm asking specifically how the color lays on the paper and how they feel in comparison?

Are Star-Joy and Castle Arts colored pencils the same product?

Not even close. While they may share colors the same the Star-joy pencils are made of different materials. I believe Castle Arts are white label pencils. Star-joy are manufactured by Andy and he owns the manufacturer that creates the pencils. He does not white label them.

I think you'll find it's so dear because of the exchange rates, we pay almost double to America or UK and Europe, but it's just because our dollar is worth less.
