Hypnotic & Beautiful, this song kept me up for two nights after the first listen...Burroughs version is like a dream written by Lewis Carroll or Edgar Allen Poe. Love it.

Was so surprised when I heard this guy at the beginning of the sixth season of The Sopranos. If nothing else, this voice is one that's hard to forget.

@Alex Clingan Yeah, I was knocked out by Uncle Bill's unmistakable voice doing the "Ah Pook" thing on "The Sopranos"...it was very apt but unexpected.

I don't think you need Stipe singing, the guitar's singing just fine here.

That was my whole childhood. I had lyrics from the sheryl Crow song written in a diary which pissed of my fucking nosey mother. This and red right hand always bring back so many memories.

Something weirdly good about this song. I rate it over the original version
@wolflower12 жыл бұрын
The R.E.M. version on Automatic for the People (1992) came first (the lyrics are all Stipe's). This was a special version the band and Burroughs recorded for an X-Files soundtrack album around 1996.

I mean it's just the instrumental backing track with Burroughs over top of it. the instrumental is the same, so they didn't really do anything new to it.

@Jennifer Niccoll Uncle Bill's last entry in "Last Words" (the diary he kept the last 10 months of his life) read: "Love---best painkiller what there is." Indeed. William S. Burroughs has given me so much pleasure, laughter, knowledge (as I stumbled down the junk sick trail and fell into all those delirium Rabbit Holes) that it gratifies me to know that he found a measure of tranquility in the end. Too, WSB NEVER stopped his assault on the psychotic War on Drugs criminals. Take care.

Jennifer Niccoll: That line - "may LOVE be your elixer" - is so beautiful and wise. May I have your permission to quote you? You sound like you're a great writer, and I'm always looking for great writers. Are you very fond of Burroughs?
