We had no safety harnesses on "Romance". I'm glad that harnesses are now being used.

And this is shown in ideal conditions! Another aspect that comes to mind is the constant need for maintenance and mending on the miles of hemp line, tackles, everything!

I love this video...And yes I am an able bodied crewman not afraid to go aloft... It's not the heights...It's that I know i'll never get to her royals....That's the place an able bodied crewman needs to be....I know ill never live it....But it sure is fun to think about...Thank you....

That was a beautiful video. Thanks a lot. Hopefully all those men will invite children to start learning about sailing. It was interesting to see so many men with grey hair. :)

While I don't think I will be able to make the sails on my LEGO ship 100% accurate, I was tying them to the bottom of the crossbeams, so really wrong, lol!

I am a docent there, been trying to join the sail crew but injured my shoulder. It's a shame, healing well though maybe I'll be there soon

Hi, I live nearby, what can I do to serve on your ship? Is there a good way for me to fill an application or should I just come by? Thanks for your time :)
@thomastheawesome4822 Жыл бұрын
@@aryg2545 well bear in mind it's volunteer work. You'll need to go to the museum and ask to volunteer and when you join, you'll have a black shirt and you'll be a training volunteer. To join the sail crew, I forgot who exactly you'll need to talk to because it's been a few years since I've been down there. But sail crew training is a whole separate thing

How did they get these ships out of port? No oars?
@ttulinsky Жыл бұрын
I'm not a sailor but I know a little--Sometimes they had to wait for the right wind and tide. Watch a video on Tacking and Wearing - they can do a lot of tricks to turn sharply. They can set the forward and aft sails at opposing angles so the bow is pushed sideways left and the stern sideways right, turning almost on a dime. They did have oars, too--the smaller boats manned with oarsmen could pull the big boat.

By the late 19th century, the large sailing ships were towed out by steam tugs, to a point where they were safely clear of land and had a fair wind.

Why does the captain bother dressing up in authentic 19th-century attire just to ruin the outfit by wearing a baseball cap?
