As the mellophone soloist in this, I can assure you the “pucker factor” was next level after seeing a 40 ft image of Donnie Vandoren imploring us to play well…or we’re going to run. Nightmare fuel!

5:58 brought me to tears and I am not even a Star alum. I am however a Freelancers alum and would give ANYTHING to don a red cadet again, just ONE more time. So to see these guys, (my contemporaries) living out THEIR drum corps dreams, FINISHING what they started, was truly moving!

This music and this corps still make me smile to this day! I was there that night and Star's performance was BY FAR the best sounding alumni corps I've ever heard, and they were likely one of the best sounding corps of the night period. It is rare when a corps can arc up and thrill an audience like this with JUST music. That speaks to arranging, excellent choice, and great teaching. I am not against the more recent push to use visuals in new ways with dance, props, more integration, etc., but I find that arranging has suffered with many corps. It was a sad day for the activity when Star and DCI parted ways. I continue to say to this day that Star of Indiana should be revamped as a DB&C. I am not against Blast! and the other ventures they have embarked on, but feel none of them really push the activity forward as much as actually being on the field.

Great to see this group FINALLY get the recognition and adulation they so rightfully deserved. Shame that they were treated like shit for simply pushing the boundaries of the activity.

around the 7:00 mark look for the buzzcut marine guy(bopping his head,chewing gum) in front of the pit. His name is Barry Hudson, thats the guy that screams "do it, finish it" during the 93 show.

I really like how well the video lined up timing wise with the guard on the dance of vengance pole work. Great way to end my drum corps performing career as well. The audience reaction from my vantage point in the trumpet line is something I'll never forget. Agree with TonyDanza007 - Matt is amazing!

"those things" are also direct quotes from the Star teaching staff on the 1993 finals recordings. I still quote them myself every time I listen to it.

There is an argument that Star of Indiana could and should have had yrs 90-93 meaning 4 titles in a row. This corps was the gold standard of the early part of the decade of the 90's. No other corps was putting music in motion as they did. The bar was set very high and not one other corps was able to approach what they did. The marching was fantastic the field general effect unmatched and the music was difficult and done to perfection. All 4 of those yrs actually belonged to Star in almost every way. In my personal opinion, if this corps was doing the work that it did in that span of time and doing it now they would compete well taking along with winning 4 straight championship's. They were the only corps of the past that had the ability to make current corps look tepid and unsophisticated.
@thephantasticfool8 жыл бұрын
Kinda a rude comment. All top 3-5 corps deserve to win pretty much all the time. Star of Indiana isn't the best drum corps ever, you can't give that title to any corps they weren't perfect
@istompconservativeass20297 жыл бұрын
you are obviously a fucking newbie.... Star was the one who ushered in the modern era and changed DCI forever, for the better.... no one 90 to 93 was even remotely close to accomplishing what they were accomplishing.
@thephantasticfool7 жыл бұрын
I Stomp Conservative Ass and you are obviously immature based on your choice in vocabulary. I don't disagree with anything you said, but they weren't the cleanest corps. They were the innovators yes, but they weren't 99.00+. They are not the best drum corps ever.

That decision was made prior to the 93 season due to the fact they knew they wanted to take their performances beyond what they could accomplish on a football field within DCI. They evolved into an indoor performance group soon becoming BLAST.

I would argue at least second in 1990....I don't think the DCI judges were ready to give it up.

I marched Star in '90. I agree. I think we maybe deserved 2nd. One or two more night and maybe we win it. We were peaking at the right time. The banner reveal on the last move was actually supposed to be a reveal and then reverse them to show different images on the last night. I think they scrapped it because of possible problems with the wind. Who knows what that would have been worth to a visual judge.

@@feverpa Just to say, I loved Star 1990... visually such a gorgeous show with fantastic equipment work, and in my 25 years of being a drum corps fan have STILL never heard a hornline sound like an organ to the degree of the intro. So DAMN lush and overtones popping everywhere. Travesty that it didn't score higher.

Did DCI record this and can you buy the audio someplace? I looked on Star's website but didn't find anything.

I can't believe that anything other then Ego was involved as to the reason to fold the corps.. I have no idea why, but what was done was to stick a finger in the eye of DCI. I also believe, Stars influence would have gone along way to holding back the reason to sing, talk, and use electronics to bastardize the activity.. Next thing you know, in a couple yrs from now, there'll be flutes and bassoons running around on the field.

All I know is, for better or worse, I got to play Medea again in '94. That much can't be disputed.
