I'm always gobsmacked at how "out of time" the actor playing Mudd feels. Back in the 60s and earlier, acting styles were much more subdued, almost rigid and formal probably because acting was still so closely tied to drama and stagecraft. But Mudd is bombastic, fluid, and his facial expressions make him feel like someone from today. He really was a fantastic character, and well acted.

Actor: Roger C. Carmel

I was very lucky to meet Roger Carmel at the Star Trek convention in Denver, CO in the mid 80’s. I was a year or 2 out of college and the 2nd Trek convention I attended. Mr. Carmel was larger than life (I was a short 5’4” tall). He was funny, irreverent but I would call him dashing and such a sweetheart. I was so upset when he passed at such a young age not more than a year later. This was back when conventions were still put on by actual fans and not profit over people corporations. Most actors did not charge for autographs and were treated as people first. I loved the Denver conventions for their emphasis on the fans and guests. They always had The Play! Best damn parodies put on by a bunch of amateurs.

The one thing you missed I think is that it was originally planned for Mudd to be who McCoy went to for a ride to Genesis in TSFS, Carmel's health problems thus also gave us the first prototype Ferengi (at least IMO the "how can you be deaf with ears like that" guy screams first draft Ferengi to me). This prototype Ferengi being Mudd's replacement in the story also points up the similarities between Mudd and Quark in particular.

Roger C. Carmel's Colonel Gumm has another distinction among "Batman" villains: He's the only villain not listed as a "Special Guest Villain" in the opening credits! Since the storyline was also a crossover with "The Green Hornet" series, the guest star spot was given to "Special Guest Heroes" Van Williams as the Green Hornet and Bruce Lee as Kato.

When they were desperately trying to put together scripts for The Next Generation's first season, Rick Berman actually approached Roger Carmel to see if he would be willing to play Harry one more time, Carmel was game, and the script was written, but sadly Carmel died before production could begin. The abandoned script was eventually made as "The Neutral Zone" When Data and Worf first uncover the cryo sleepers, they discover one pod is empty but running, hinting that someone had already left. That was supposed to be Harry!

If you’re counting Mudd’s appearance in TAS as part of him being a recurring character, then he is not the only recurring character. Stanley Adams lent his voice to Cyrano Jones in “More Tribbles, More Troubles”.

@@DavidNash1948 There was no "they." Star Trek had no writing staff; each episode was written by an independent author. Stephen Kandel wrote "Mudd's Women," and an as-yet unknown author named David Gerrold wrote "The Trouble with Tribbles." Read Gerrold's book "The Trouble with Tribbles" (Ballantine Books, 1973) He'll tell you the real story. (Remember, this is the guy who wrote the actual episode.) He had seen only a few episodes of Star Trek, and "Mudd's Women" was not one of them. He didn't even know who Harry Mudd was. He created Cyrano Smith entirely independently. In later drafts, Smith became Cyrano Day Jaymin, and finally Cyrano Jones. In his notes on Gerrold's outline, Bob Justman wrote "Cyrano...could stand some more development...Does he remind you of Harry Mudd?" Justman was certainly aware that there were similarities between the two characters, but Gerrold wrote Cyrano with one important difference: "I didn't want him to be an outright liar, just a charming con man. Inept, but charming."

Mudd actually does exist in the Kelvin universe, but as Harriet Mudd. There was a prequel comic to Into Darkness where Kirk and crew run in to Harriet Mudd. The Mudd's have Transformers ties. Rainn Wilson played Professor Colan in 2009's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But of course Roger C. Carmel was known as the voice of Stunticon MotorMaster in season 2 of the original Transformers 80s cartoon. As well as Decepticon Cyclonus in season 3 and as the second actor to voice the chaos bringer himself Unicron, also from season 3 after Unicron's introduction in Transformers: the movie (then voiced by Orson Wells). Lesser known is Tom Wyner who voiced Harry Mudd in the Star Trek 25th Anniversary game who voiced the green Backhoe named Grimlock (not to be confused with the Dinobot with the same name) in 2001's Transformers Robots In Disguise! ;)

Here's a fun one, and with Wednesday just released it's a fun meta link. In the Rodger Corby episode the huge android Ruk is played by the actor who played Lurch in the 60s Addams Family. In TNG Lwaxana Troi's servant Mr. Homm is played by the Lurch actor from the 90s films. Despite Mr. Homm being in multiple episodes he has less total lines than the first Lurch in Star Trek.

Roger C. Carmel has always been a great actor and a great character. It seemed he specialized in bringing ordinary people into an over-the-top reality. Before STAR TREK he was the "heart" of a great DICK VAN DYKE SHOW episode titled "It Wouldn't Hurt to Give Them a Raise." In the episode he plays a character named Doug Wesley, a corporate accountant trying to explain the subject to Van Dyke's character, Rob Petrie. His comic timing with Van Dyke is perfect. Now, almost 60 years later it is still hilarious.

Carmel's portrayal of Mudd is what made the character work, his acting, his voice. He was that classic type, distinctive voice, grand gestures like all the worlds a stage. Unfortunately I don't think Wilson fits those shoes, he has a similar appearance, but that's about it, he's doesn't have the charm of R.C.C. I would've preferred someone who maybe looked less like Carmel and acted more like Mudd.

Given a choice between Harry Mudd & Quark, I’d rather hang out at Quark’s Bar. Harry was namechecked in Star Trek: Into Darkness. Starlog Magazine reported that there was a planned Harry Mudd TV spin off. Mr. Carmel also voiced the Quintesson bailiff or judge in the 1986 Transformers: The Movie.

@8:16 About the Klingon Coffee. This might seem pedantic but he probably could not have imported it as you say: "if not the entire galaxy..." The entire galaxy? That would imply he ventured OUTSIDE the Milky Way galaxy, or possibly encountered beings with this coffee from outside the Milky Way galaxy. The Klingons exist within our Milky Way galaxy. Nearly the entire Star Trek universe is set within the Milky Way galaxy. However, In TOS: By Any Other Name, the Kelvan's attempt to take the Enterprise to their home in the Andromeda Galaxy and that is ~2.5 million light years away and with their technology a mere 300 year journey each way, not the ~2.5 million year journey it would take at light speed.

Saying Mudd is the only character to recur before the movies outside the series regulars is inaccurate. It's more accurate to say that he's the only non-Starfleet character to recur before the movies. Kevin Riley, DeSalle, Rand, Chapel, M'Benga, Leslie and a few other non-regular crew characters made at least two appearances and some more than that. Even one of the admirals (Komack, I think?) made more than one appearance. Heck, in a strict technical sense, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura and Chekov also count in this manner as they were never given top billing, appearing only in the end credits in episodes they appeared in (same applied to McCoy for season 1 of TOS).

You miss "The Mudd Incident" from the Abrams Reboot/ Kelvin Timeline. Right before Kirk/ Spock/ and Uhura get into the acquired ship to go down to Kronos to get Khan, Sulu over the intercome talks about prepping the ship acquired in the Mudd incident.

It would've been great to include one of the more recent TOS comics where he gets set up to become President of the Federation as part of a political/time war scheme

And no mention that Roddenberry was probably inspired to name the character after Harvey Mudd College, a college specializing in engineering, math and the sciences, located in the greater Los Angeles area.

It's a shame they didn't do a comical side plot of Harry Mudd's troubles incarcerated on the android planet with Kirk's little revenge creating multiple Stella's to keep him in check. Perhaps they still could.

I would love to see a "spin-off" series based on Harry as the main character. Always coming up with cons and scams only to be thwarted, manage an escape and start a new scam.

How did you not mention that the Batman episode he appeared in was the crossover episode with The Green Hornet? A comic book character cross over from two different companies all the way back in the 1960s!

They keep getting basic facts wrong. I notice this on Ellie's videos a lot. Yeoman Rand, Nurse Chapel, and Ensign Riley were recurring characters on the original show. Even if you want to count Chapel because Majel Barrett was the computer's voice that still leaves two off the top of my head

Didn't really care for his interpretation in "Discovery". Mudd's best portrayal came in the [non-canon] second series run of DC comics' "Star Trek" series ("The Sky Above... The Mudd Below").
