Star Trek fan Eddie joins Mikey as he embarks on the ultimate journey.... STAR TREK! Despite a few odd episodes here and there Mikey is COMPLETELY new to this world and with the journey through the 2009 trilogy we aim to dive deep into Star Trek: TNG after this! A few fans have recommended some original Star Trek episodes for us to watch too, so if you have any you think are essential for the experience let us know!

If you're going to start this franchise, I really think you should start at the beginning with the original series from 1966-68. It's only 79 episodes, and even though it's dated, it's truly the origin of so much that has become part of our popular culture.
@RocketSurgn_4 күн бұрын
“Only?” 79 episodes? Haha, I grew up with and love Star Trek but that is not “only”, even ignoring the other long series after it. If you actually commit to watching all of TOS as an introduction… to the other very long running series? It’s great when people get into the rest of the shows including the original series but unrealistic for most people much less reaction channels that put out an episode of a show a week. The Abrams movies are how a log of people get hooked into even considering more Star Trek.
@thebradshreve2 күн бұрын
I agree. Done the right way they can have fun with it.

If you're thinking about going further into the ST shows, I strongly recommend you start with TOS, or at least a sampling of the most popular episodes. TNG is great, but you ought to experience the original characters too, because they are such a core part of the Star Trek universe. Most of the movies are about the TOS crew.

The saucer/primary hull section of ships in Trek is the location of the bridge, crew quarters, main labs, storage, etc... The secondary hull/Star drive (tube shaped section) is where engineering and more dangerous labs and storage are located. Also the propulsion pods (nacelles) are extended and elevated to the sides to keep people away from the radiation caused by the warp coils when an warp bubble (Faster than light method of transportation) is generated.

When I was a kid in the 70's we only had 5 channels, 1 color TV and 1 B&W portable TV. My sister was 4 years older so we had to watch whatever she wanted to watch and she loved Star Trek. I never really cared for the original just because of the very 60's aesthetic. As I got older I came to appreciate it more.

City on the Edge of Forever is a phenomenal standalone episode of TOS.

It`s called "the Kelvin timeline" because the timeline changes after the event that happens at the start of this movie with the USS Kelvin and it`s destruction of the ship at the hands of the time displaced Nero (Romulans) and his crew.

Fun reaction, I do enjoy this reboot movie but my favorite ST movies are still with the OG cast (the even numbers) & First Contact with the TNG cast. Watching this also makes me remember the too early death of Anton Yelchin. RIP. As for Keith Urban, I first think of him as Eomer from The Two Towers.

Sci-fi Dexterity Test #2: Can you raise only one eyebrow??? That is the question. The thrust of the comments here are spot on. The best way to cover the Star Trek Franchise is to start with the original. I too would recommend skipping episodes given how massive a commitment the STU is. Otherwise it will be 2031 when you wrap. ( Not to mention my selfish dream of having you react to Limitless would surely die a cold, cruel, soul crushing death. ) As an encouragement to your Patreon and KZbin communities may I suggest each season you watch, watch the top 10 episodes as voted by the fans? Some episodes don't hold up. Trust me children and the Next Generation is a near lethal mix all Aliens of the Human Species should avoid like the plague. Top 10 votes are the way to go. IF Science Fiction is your goal, after the Original Star Trek and Next Gen, take a break and jump into the Stargate Universe. It doesn't get the love of other franchises but trust me, it is damned good Sci-Fi where it feels good to cheer on the good guys.

the original series might have some funny episodes.. but also has some very interesting ones with real concepts to think about. I would love you to start from the beginning; even the very first with the captain that was replaced.

I want to echo what has been said in the comments already. there is a strong argument for watching The Original Series (TOS) first, at least some of the more higly regarded episodes, and the older movies is also a good idea. Mostly I think the second movie would be important to tak part of, that is probably one of the most important pieces of media when it comes to getting the dynamic of these original characters. TNG is a great show too! It would be fun to revisit it with you guys. I am foremost a Star Wars fan, but through that Science Fiction has become a big part of my interest. another great series in this genre is Stargate, not as much spoken about but I would absolutely add that to a Sci-Fi trifecta among the stars, ( STAR Wars, STAR Trek & STARgate, get it?)

Just to clarify for Mikey, Not ALL the movies are in a separate universe, just these three. there are older movies that are part of the Prime universe.

If you're going to get into Star Trek, you absolutely have _got_ to start with the original series. Yes, they're kinda campy and maybe a little cheesy by today's standards, but they were groundbreaking at the time. The social commentary was _very_ forward-thinking for the time on TV.
@oldbroadwithbaggage54723 күн бұрын
I really feel that if you are going to get into Star Trek, you need to start with the original series (TOS). By the way, I'm a huge Star Trek fan, for the original show since the early '70s, as i was a baby in the late '60s. Do two episodes at a time or something like that. The people from this movie are from TOS. Overlook the 1960's effects instead of nitpicking them. It is pretty amazing when you see that the actors in this movie caught the feel of the old actors. This movie as an alternate timeline, like the MCU multiverse. So the Spock's could run into each other. I think if you go right into TNG from herel there could be some confusion in the continuity for you. Just my two cents.
@thebradshreve2 күн бұрын
The actors in this did an outstanding job mimicking the original cast while maintaining enough of their own take on the characters so it doesn't look like a parody.
@ChrissonatorOFL3 күн бұрын
It's always interesting that people start with these movies, even though they are more action than nuance like previous Trek, it really doesn't show what Star Trek is really about.
@ChrissonatorOFL3 күн бұрын
TNG definitely got a nice visual update when they remastered it, so it's almost like it was filmed recently, not over 35 years ago.

I personally would never start at this movie (my personal opinion), but I would watch key episodes of the OST, the original movies and them move on to the series TNG, My favorite DS9, VOY and ENT.

TNG is the wrong choice. Setting aside season one sucks and first impressions last, TOS is just a better, more classic show. That season one is excellent.

Another reacted couple found that while season 1 and 2 are weaker you need to watch a few key.episodes that have key information for later episodes.

ill be honest guys the gfx havent gotten much better since final fantasy the spirit within, some scaling but not much, as an artist i noticce the finer changes and there isnt much. now love death and robot has done really good in that way, same with secret levels, but most movies are meh on improving.
@self-transforming_machine-elf4 күн бұрын
TNG is a great place to start, you can jump back to TOS no problem. This trilogy is a JJ Abrams reboot, so you know from experience it's not that representative of the overall vibe of the franchise, although I would rate it higher than his SW work.

I watched these when they first came out but about last September I started the next generation and I'm an official fan. Iv watched the origional 6 movies and About to move onto deep space 9 it voyager but don't know which one yet, maybe the generations movies first. Hope you enjoy as much as I have. I will definitely subscribe if you continue to watch

The original series can be painful to watch given that it's 60 years old but there's amazing stuff there that was groundbreaking. I suggest watching it because it laid the foundation that much of the other series and movies refer to. You can have fun making fun of the show's cheesey effects and storylines, while I think you will be surprised how impressed you are at the same time. Definitely more cerebral than physical overall.

When this movie came out, I was not a fan of it. Still prefer the original timeline. But, movies 2 and 3 in the Kelvin timeline are enjoyable. I've only seen bits and pieces of the original series. The original timeline movies from 2 on and The Next Generation were really my entry point into Trek. Loved TNG. But my favorite series is Deep Space 9. Enjoyed Voyager. Didn't care for Enterprise. As for the newer series. Enjoyed season 3 of Picard. Have yet to watch the prior seasons. Watched a couple seasons of Discovery. It's a bit hit and miss for me. Am enjoying Strange New Worlds. Loved Lower Decks; works best if you are familiar with the series that came before it as it makes tons of references to them. Haven't seen Prodigy. Would really love to see someone react to DS9 (after you get through the pre-requisite seasons of TNG).
@SomeGuys314153 күн бұрын
Watch some TOS episodes. There’s no story arcs, so you can just hop in and watch some. TOS has amazing episodes, but also a lot of stinkers that you won’t miss if you skip. Maybe pull a list of like 12-20 top episodes.
@chet86824 күн бұрын
I LOVE this franchise but I'm not a purist. it's mostly stand alone, you don't need to watch every episode which would take YEARS. I'd say do a top 10 or 20 of the original, the original movies, a top 40 or so of next gen will cover most of the great episodes. no need really to spend the next 10 years reacting to EVERYTHING. that's just an unreal expectation to put on a reactor that isn't JUST watching star trek and let's us as the viewer to see them react to most of the classics

While this film is entertaining, it's Star Trek thru the lens of a Star Wars fan in the director JJ Abrams.
@robertcartier50884 күн бұрын
Ah, yes... 2009, the year they let a misguided fan (JJ) turn outer space claustrophobic! 🤷♂️ Note: There are many more movies that just the 3 in this Kelvin timeline. The others are based on both the original series, and the next generation... Each with their respective casts. Also great fun but only after seeing the series they are tied to. There's even a crossover film with original and tng character. Yes, ST: TNG is a fine place to start. It is brilliant! First season is slower but worth it. My fav is another of the spinoff series, "Deep Space Nine". Enjoy!

I loved TNG but when I watch the first season I wonder how they didn't get canceled. It took them awhile to hit their stride but they wound up producing some unforgettable episodes and characters.

TNG has a problem common to many American TV series of the time, it's deeply patronisingly preachy. I regard it as the worst rewatch.

Originally, the episodes all ended with one of the characters telling Wesley the moral of the story and it felt like an after-school special. Glad they got away from that.
